Anime Central’s Anime Music Video Contest (AMV Contest) consists of fan-created music videos themes around anime created by talented video editors around the world.
Anime Music Video (AMV) Guidelines
AMV Categories
Videos will be organized based on the following categories. Live Action and Category Preshow videos will be submitted under these categories.
- Intensity: Fast paced editing, suspenseful, action packed, intense emotional feelings, adrenaline inducing.
- Drama/Sentimental: Feels heavy, nostalgic, theatrical, heart wrenching.
- Upbeat/Fun: Positivity, fast paced enjoyment, playful, dance heavy, lighthearted.
- Comedy/Parody: Be funny, commercials, tv openings.
- Trailer: Trailers or anything trailer-esque.
- Freestyle: Anything not described above. Videos sent here must not fit any of the described categories above.
- Con Theme: Roll for Initiative
Entries that are submitted to a certain category may be subject to recategorization. We will reach out to you if we believe this to be the case for your approval. If an entry is recategorized to a category that already received a submission from you, then we will contact you to let you know so a change is possible.
AMV Awards
We will have a category winner, runner up, and honorable mention. We will also have a Judge’s Choice winner and a Best in Show winner. To view previous awards handed out, please check out the our listing on amvawards.org.
During the convention, we will showcase as many entries as possible. All winners will be revealed at an AMV award ceremony on Sunday.
Depending on the volume of entries received, the total number of winners may be increased or decreased with or without notice.
Submission Rules
- You may submit up to 1 entry per category per person.
- Live action videos and category pre-show videos are exempt from the entry limit. Please refer to Rule 5.
- Videos submitted between May 19, 2019 and May 19, 2023 are allowed a second entry per category. For example, you may submit one video made in 2021 and another video made in 2023 into the Intensity category. Please refer to Rule 3.
- Multi-Editor projects (MEPs) are allowed but will count towards your number of entries for everyone involved.
- Due to a lack of a full contest between 2020-2022, videos may be submitted if it was created after May 19th, 2019. We will allow creators to send in one video created between May 19th, 2019 and May 19th, 2023, and another video created after May 19th, 2023. You may not resubmit a video if it’s been a finalist in a past ACen AMV contest. The contest structure may change based on the number of submissions as well as scheduling, but videos created after May 19th, 2023 will take priority for the main contest.
- Entries may not contain bumpers, title screens, self-promotions, references to other events, or credits. ACen staff will add uniform credits to all entries.
- Videos must be between 1 minute minimum and 6 minutes maximum in duration. Videos longer than that are allowed to be submitted, but will be viewed with more scrutiny.
- We are accepting video submissions for category pre-shows. They are short form videos used to lead into each category. They must be between 15 seconds and 1 minute to be considered for the category pre-shows.
- We accept footage from anime, western animation, video games, live action sources, etc. If there is any question about your video’s source footage, do not hesitate to ask!
- All live action videos will compete alongside the other videos, but
regardless of results one live action video will win an award based on the discretion of the judges. Live action videos must be fully live action to be considered a live action video. No animation may be featured to be classified as a live action video.

- No studio trademark logos.
- No irrelevant subtitles unless they are added in with a creative purpose.
- If you are caught submitting an AMV that is not your own, you will be banned from participating in all future ACen AMV contests. We will also report you to other AMV coordinators as a precaution.
- We reserve the right to disqualify your video if we deem it inappropriate for viewing standards. Examples of this would include hate speech, explicit sexual content. If you are not sure if your entry will be disqualified, please e-mail Reyd.Nguyen@ACen.org to discuss the content in question.
Technical Standards
- Entries must be in either .mp4 or .mov formats. We strongly recommend that you submit videos as an .mp4.
- We recommend H.264/AVC 8-bit codecs. Newer generation codecs such as H.265 or 10-bit may result in playback issues.
- Files must be under 400 MB in size. If you have any questions about your entry being too large, please consult the AMV 101 Encoding guide.
- The following are technical issues that may result in disqualification:
- Interlacing.
- Squashed or stretched aspect ratios.
- Chunky/blocky video
- Color banding (Color gradients caused by video re-compression)
- Blurry video
- Line aliasing
- Audio distortions, clipping, or unintentionally pitch shifted.
- Submissions that do not follow these guidelines may have playback issues and be difficult to work with. We will consider these submissions to have technical issues. We will do our best to have your submission accepted, even if it doesn’t follow the above requirements.
Additional Details
- If we receive multiple entries from one person in a category, we will contact you to choose one video for consideration. If we do not hear back from you, the first video submitted will be selected.
- Convention staff are welcome to submit their works as long as they are not part of the judging or video programming teams.
- It is the responsibility of the participant to secure and maintain the rights to the works they use.
- By submitting any work to Anime Central, you permit the Midwest Animation Promotion Society the rights to use your media for promotional purposes for future uses. Entries will not be published or streamed for any reason.
- Contestants do not need to attend Anime Central 2024 to enter the contest
but are recommended to. - Rules are subject to change at the discretion of the Anime Central staff with or without notice. Additionally, the video programming team reserves the right to reject a video at any time.
Submission Deadline
All entries must be received by the end of the day on April 5th, 2024 to be considered for this years convention.
