Vest Pattern

Recommended Posts

Keba

I know very little abut sewing. And yet, I want to sew my own vest.

At last year's ACen, I went as Greed from FMA. What I did for the vest was buy one off eBay and safety-pin a fluffy collar to it. This year, I want to upgrade to something that looks less slapped together.

I went to a fabric store and bought some faux leather and bias tape. After a while, the thought of, "now what?" started to sink in. I consulted someone I know who knows a little about sewing. He said I need a pattern. Oops.

My second trip to the fabric store was not so fulfilling. I asked for help, and the lady at the store patiently showed me how to browse patterns. She even took my measurements (I still have them written down). My problem is that all the patterns were... girly.

So here are my questions: Where can I find a pattern that'll fit me AND not look feminine? Is there some possibility that I could design my own? How would I go about doing that (Someone suggested that I trace my biggest unisex t-shirt)? How would I attach the bias tape and last year's fluffy collar? Would I have time to finish the whole project if I worked really, really hard?

Just so you know, I do have a lot of sewing supplies such as needles, thread, pins, measuring tape, and other stuff that I can't think of right now. No sewing machine, though.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Here's a few patterns that might help you out :)

If you want to make your own pattern you could try tracing a vest you already own and then modifying it from there :)

Here's also a nice bias tape tutorial:

I think you could definitely make the vest before ACen! Just make sure you set aside time to work on it, especially if you're handsewing since this will take longer <3

Thanks so much! I'll try tracing a vest, and if that doesn't work out, I'll buy one of those patterns. Thanks again!
