Let's talk about Visual Novels

Recommended Posts

I'm playing something called Yume Miru Kusuri. It's 18+ But it's REALLY REALLY GOOD.

The storyline is touching, the characters I can get into, and it's translated in english :D I cried on one of the paths because it was that touching.

Agreed on all counts, I loved Yume Miru Kusuri. Nekoko's arc was my favorite.

999 is not only one of the best visual novels I've ever played, it's one of the best stories I've ever experienced. It's truly a masterpiece, and in the end I liked it more than Ever17.

Hmmm, I've never heard of it, but I may have to check this out then. o: *runs off to Google it*

is 999 nine hours, nine doors, nine persons? If so trying to get that game right now...kinda of. It's for the ds lite Taiyaki.

I'm saving for ACen though...so I gotta wait til feb/march >_>;

I'm thinking about trying some of these other VN games like Ren'Py.

Btw the patch for Tokimeki love plus is done I believe besides some cleaning up; everything I seen on the game was translated except for the obvious. I played the game and there isn't any japanese script except for the beginning where you have to input your name and even then you can do it in English. The only gripe I have is that you can only use three slots for english and japanese ._. Even the endings are in English!

The second game Tokimeki 2 patch isn't done: a partial one was released recently. I'm learning japanese so I can translate VN games among other things

*breaths at how much she said* There is Starry*sky game VN for the PSP/PC but it's in japanese only.

I just finished Yume Miru Kusuri in a 2 day run... I devour Visual Novels once I start them.

I'll have to look into Tokimeki since I am still looking for more visual novels to play.

Good luck with learning Japanese! I did that and translated for awhile but I got tired of it really quickly and hate doing it unless I have too. Damn evil Kanji... *glares at his kanji dictionary*

"My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute" got me to finally play some eroge. I am currently playing Yume Miru Kusuri. It's kind of slow right now, but I'm hoping it picks up.

I'm thinking about playing Eidelweiss, Eidelweiss Fantasia, Da Capo and Da Capo Innocent Finale. Are these any good? They sound cool.

Any recommendations that are in English?

Yume Miru Kusuri is a good place to be starting.

If you don't mind the blood and guts, Saya no Uta is really good.

If all you want is porn then Cat Girl Alliance is a great place to start.

I also suggest for more story based eroge to try Snow Sakura and Fate Stay Night. THTR is right that Saya no Uta is also a good one to play.

I'd also suggest playing Tears to Tiara, which is a GREAT Visual Novel and Eroge with some RPG elements to it.

Speaking of Ore no Imouto, it has a visual novel coming out on the 27th of this month in Japan for the psp. I have a copy reserved on EMS order and am getting overly excited for it to ship and get here, I need something to do and playing it and translating it is going to keep me busy <3

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm really excited! I just met Nekoko in Yume Miru Kusuri so hopefully it gets more exciting!

I'm so excited for the Ore no Imoto VN! I am going to have to wait for the English patch though. I'll have to play some other VNs to keep me occupied til then. XD

I need and wanna get my hands on the original Higurashi and Umineko sound and visual novels since I heard they're way much better than the original anime series. I am however turn off by the fact visual novels and sound novels aren't really as interactive but maybe my love for Higurashi and Umineko can let that slide.

I didn't get particularly far in either the Umineko VN or anime, but from what I did see, the VN was indeed much better. Many details were skipped or glossed over in the anime.

Quartett! was translated just a couple days ago. It has a distinct visual style -- more like an interactive comic than a story told with stock poses and the occasional unique picture. Quartett! has some adult content, but the story is driven by narrative.

If anyone's looking for a list of visual novels in English regardless of content, here's the alphabetical list from the Visual Novel Database. And here's the list of all worksafe VNs in English. Please note that both links include some games that are long out-of-print.

Nice, that list is going to be helpful. :D

Yesterday I finished Wind ~a breath of heart~. That was... pretty mediocre. The worst out of the small number I've finished, that's for sure.

Today I started on Chaos;Head. Much better so far.

I found my old burned disc copy of Majipuri Wonder Cradle in a box, my first ever eroge visual novel I ever played and one I haven't played since 2006. I installed it and have been playing through it. It's completely untranslated and has 5 character routes, I've already unlock 3 of the 5 but have to play through 2 of the unlocked ones still.

I also have my shipping notice that the new Ore no Imouto visual novel for the PSP is on it's way to my mail box, I am looking forward to it's arrival and playing it!

My mom c***-blocked the main character in Yume Miru Kusuri. My mom is so mean! >:( He was about to get laid by the student council president and my mom told me I needed to get off the computer to clean my room. Once she was downstairs and out of sight, I was able to help the guy get laid. XD

So I just went to play Chaos;Head, and I got an error. It went fine until I clicked to open up my saved game, but then I got this and the game closed. It doesn't happen when I open up my older saves, though, only with my most recent one.

Anyone who knows Japanese can help me with this? :(

Damn, that doesn't tell me anything I don't know already. XD I'll have to find a more VN-centric forum for help fixing this, I guess.

Thanks for translating, though. :)

May you have quit the game accidentally while a save file was being over-written?

I don't think that's the issue. Since my old saves were still working, I loaded one, skipped ahead to the point where I was, and made a new save. That part worked fine, but after I closed the game and started it up again to see if I could load the new save, I got the same error.

I dunno but Persona 3 on the PSP is like this the new one. I have no idea if anyone mentioned this or not ._.

There's Starry*Sky but that hasn't been translated yet....-,-;

Also there is a blog with nothing but VNs http://breadmasterlee.wordpress.com/

The first Starry Sky VN ("in Spring", Windows version) has been translated: http://vndb.org/r11160

Also there is a blog with nothing but VNs http://breadmasterlee.wordpress.com/

Hinano's reviews generally discuss individual character routes, usually followed by a summary. In between all the ranting, it can sometimes be tough to tell what she likes and dislikes.

For untranslated visual novels, one current blog is Hau~ Omochikaeri~! It contains links to several similar blogs. Just keep in mind that some parts of the site aren't worksafe.

Lijakaca's Otome Gaming Blog focuses on untranslated girls' games. Very worksafe, contains more useful links.

And of course there's relevant blogs made by professional translators, fan translation groups, people creating visual novels in English, etc.

what is a visual novel exactly? some one said thousand arms was kinda like one, so i'm curious.

Hmm...not really. Imagine a game slightly based off the engine run during date, but you don't have as many chances to pick choices. VN's are more or less computer choose your own adventures.

I've been playing Da Capo 2 lately and it's good. I got it two weeks ago and I still haven't gotten through it all (I take my time though)

I have the Da Capo 1 and 2 on my computer and going to get Da Capo Innocent Finale. Glad to hear it's good!

Is it a lot better than the anime? 'Cause what I watched of that was pretty bad.
