The Crappiest Anime Ever!

Recommended Posts

What do you get when you add Robotech, Voltron, and just a dash of Korea animation? You get Space Thunder Kids! The crappiest anime of the 80s I know there is so bad anime out there but animation wise this is terrible. You have one scene devote a minute and a 1/2 to tanks, they use the same shot twice in a crappy battleship attack, a feeble attempt to take out a windshield, AND THE WEIRDEST SQUINTED FACES I HAVE SEEN. Oh and did I mention poor dubbing?

If I were to have a panel I would like to show this whole movie in its entirety just for laughs and we can riff on it and stuff XD But ill let you be the judge. Ladies and gentleman, I bring you...SPACE THUNDER KIDS!!!!

Here's a sample clip on youtube. Enjoy!

Yes, though some crappy anime are so bad that their epic.

Take for example The Shinesmen.

Company employees who fight to protect the company from a hostile take over by humanoid aliens bent on corporate world domination.

Oh yeah, its bad, but hilarious to watch and make fun of.

Also look up Soar High Isami! Kids show where elementary school kids use sci fi weapons to take on the evil black tengu gang.

Taiyakizero, if you were curious, I honestly liked the Shinesman OAVs. I knew from the beginning that it was a comedy... so if you went into it expecting drama or lots of action, maybe you were let down. I consider the video to be about an hour of completely intentional humor. Oh well...

Putting that aside, I've certainly heard plenty of stories about the legendary bad-ness of Space Thunder Kids. And it's not the only film of its type. If you want to experience a remarkably irony-free (and yes, worksafe) site, visit the official IDF Films' animation features page here: http://www.ifdfilms.com/ani.htm The titles on the site routinely show in in Anime Hell programs, and sometimes appear in bargain bins and used media stores. They've also been mocked by audio podcasts such as WARP Anime Review, Lather's Blather, and Anime World Order.

Before I finish, there's some vintage bad dubs that shouldn't be forgotten. "Clash of the Bionoids" is said to be the remarkably poorly dubbed edition of Macross: Do You Remember Love. "Warriors of the Wind" is a poorly dubbed version of Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind that also needlessly removed about a third of the movie's content. And "Macron-1" is an old TV series that sloppily combined two unrelated shows, and according to the long-dead Team Sexy Madam's 95 Theses at http://web.archive.org/web/20010417011123/...t/lists/95.html , makes any recent dub look good. (I haven't seen these myself YET, but I've heard horror stories aplenty.)

I didn't go into it expecting much of anything, in fact it was introduced to me as a crappy show that was hilarious due to the satire it played on the henshin heroes genre. I wasn't bashing it what-so-ever.

Said it was a crappy show, never said I didn't enjoy it. I actually did enjoy laughing at it. I think it is good satire.

Wow. thats bad. We need more of these!
Boy, it almost makes me want to hunt these bad boys down and try to survive private screenings.

Too bad we couldn't have bunch of these showing in one of the viewing rooms like a bad-ime-thon one night with the allowment to riff on it.

On a side note, I do have vhs copies of AoTSM and RoTD.

I think a few dealers on Ebay sell dvd copies of these too.

Well AoTSM is for sure.

I would love to do something like this. A panel or a nice riff along where we can throw in our jokes and a few laughs. I need to find some DVDs or VHS of the ones we mentioned. I mean really bad animation, dubbing, and poor translation. If you can find more similar to this post it here. And thanks for the link Dork At Large. I watched Space Thunder Kids with a couple of friends last night. Aside the fact they use some of the same animations over again, there were so many explosions in that film Michael Bey would say that's overkill. I also love that they use the word "Outstanding Animation Feature" on their site rather loosely.

Oh man...I actually watched Shinesman. Supposedly the Japanese version was actually supposed to be serious, but the American dubbers couldn't bring themselves to read the cheesy dialogue and just went full-bore parody. So bad it's good.

Cosplay Complex is the worst anime ever made in my opinion. It managed to knock Battle Skipper out of the top spot on my List of Anime That Should Be Burned. At least Battle Skipper could be funny. Cosplay Complex was just teeth-jarringly awful. I'm not sure where to begin: the annoying child, the magical creature ripoffs of Cardcaptor Sakura, the Happosai clone, the lack of plot, or the unrepentant pedophile?

Here's my list. Note that there are some popular anime on this list, but IMHO, popular doesn't mean good. There's some hentai here too, because there's a difference between hentai that is just funny, and hentai that is disturbing but mildly amusing, and hentai that is just too horrible to contemplate.

List of Anime That Should Be Burned

Cosplay Complex

Battle Skipper

Explorer Woman Ray

Legend of the Overfiend (all of it)

Bible Black (all of it)

Angel Cop

Sailor Moon and the Seven Ballz (there's parody and there's stuff that should be outlawed as crimes against humanity)

Gasaraki

Silent Service

Super Atragon

Sakura Diaries

I remember seeing a panel like this at ACen back in '04. The room was packed. I wonder if they came back since... but I would love to see it again.

There's also a horribly edited and dubbed Ultraman anime that I have. I just wish they'd release of the untouched originals of the shows. I remember where some parts of Space Thunder Kids were from and I'd do anything to relive that part of my childhood.

Clash of the Bionoids!

Better known as "We've got the rights to Macross, but Robotech's already been made, so we'll change all the words, cut it to pieces, and give it a bad dubbing, and maybe nobody will notice!"

Actually, watching Clash of the Bionoids wasn't too bad, as long as you had some background on the actual series. And if you'd seen Robotech, it was interesting to compare the two.

Here's a nice Mazinger Z rip off fresh from Korea in the 70s

Protector Of The Universe!

Heh, I actually collect this stuff...not so much *bad* anime, but the stuff you find in Wal-Mart and dollar stores. Here's what I have so far:

  • The Wonderful Galaxy of Oz (this one's actually pretty good)
    Protectors of Universe
    Raiders of Galaxy
    Space Thunder Kids
Starbirds: Birds of Prey (not sure about the title, but its WTF factor is legendary)
Tom and Huck's Mississippi Adventure (with a very ironic twist)
    Thunder Prince
Kimba the White Lion Vols. 1 and 2 (not a bad one; just a $1 one)
The Street Fighter/Return of the Street Fighter Double Feature
    The Bodyguard (Sonny Chiba)
Aladdin (not the Disney version, mind, but a horrifically cheap version with several Doctor Who actors doing the voices)
    The Adventures of Captain Harlock
    Captain Harlock and Friends
The Wizard of Oz and Other Stories (features a LOT of old Fleischer cartoons, but "Wizard" is anime)
Mazinger Z: El Robot de las Estrellas (a Filipino/Vietnamese movie that's been dubbed into Spanish--an acid trip!)
    Mr. Wonderbird (not an anime)
    Space Transformer (another WTF one)
Destroy All Planets/Gamera Strikes Back Double Feature
    The Crystal Triangle
Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie (I throw it in just because)
Super Mario Bros. The Movie (just because)

By the way, Joseph Lai had a company back in the day called either ADDA or IFD. They were best known for releasing martial-arts films constructed from a dozen films and with some new footage added. They did the same for their anime releases. I'm still looking for "Solar Adventure."

EDIT: If I can get a few fans together, I'd be interested in doing RiffTrax alternate commentaries for my entire collection.

I'd would totally support the idea of ACen having a "So bad it's awesome anime screening room" I can sit down for hours and watch this awful stuff just because it's mind boggling how low the budget and quality is on these.

Edit: It makes me sad to see Harlock on that list. Low budget or not, it was a ground breaking anime for it's day :< ((hopeless Leiji Matsumoto fantart))

RE: Ska Toranpetta

Yes, it's shocking, isn't it? Thank God most of them cost only $1, but it seems the Dollar Store doesn't have as much in the way of anime. EastWest's DVD packaging is really unreliable for telling whether or not it's anime.

Now, I never once said that it was *bad,* or made any other value judgment. I only said that I was able to get it for one dollar.

Ahh, alright. I missed that then, lol.

The sequel, "Captain Harlock and Friends," on the other hand, is mostly unintelligible...or, at least, that's the DVD release talking. I feel like there was an entire second half cut out, because the thing stops abruptly and is replaced by some old Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons.
