  1. Call for Fanfiction Panelists

It's that time again! No, it's not time to spin the Wheel of Morality ™, it's time to select panelists for the Anime Central 2018 Fanfiction Panel! If you're going to be attending ACen and you're interested in being on the panel, please send the following information: 1. Your name or preferred handle. 2. Your real name, if different. 3. A list of your preferred works, including any you may have written in the past year. 4. The URL of your website, if any, or where your works can be found. 5. If you've been on a fanfic panel before, and if so, where. 6. (OPTIONAL) Why you'd like to be on the panel. Please private mail me at pmui1@NOSPAMPLEASE.prodigy.net ASAP if you're interested or PM me on the forum. (I'm sure you know what to remove--it's in capitals.) :-) The panel has been submitted and I can add more panelists. Some clarifications: 1. This is meant to be an all-ages fanfiction panel. That means if you're looking for 18+ information, look elsewhere. 2. This is not meant to be a "we dispense wisdom from on high" panel. This is meant to be interactive. In my experiences running the panel, I've learned just as much from the audience as they have from me and the rest of the panel. 3. The prevailing attitude is one of support. Yes, it's very easy to read bad fanfiction and mock the author. Its harder (and more satisfying) to say "here's what can go wrong and here's what we suggest to avoid that." Hope to hear from you soon! --Pearson "Doc" Mui

  3. Call for Fanfiction Panelists 2017

Last call, people! I had one of my panelists drop out and I'm looking for someone to help out. The deadline to add panelists is approaching, so if you're interested, please drop a line before March 31. Thanks, --Doc
  4. Call for Fanfiction Panelists 2017

It's more of sharing general advice than it is critiquing actual fics. There's also an icebreaker topic every year just to get the ball rolling. In the past, we've discussed plot twists, care and feeding of your characters, plot-driven vs. character-driven stories and the dreaded self-insert characters and how to avoid the usual traps. It's my general policy not to name names or pick out stories just to tear them apart. I will, however, use examples from licensed movies/stories and show that, indeed, the pros do the same thing that we fanfiction authors do. In one case, I described (but didn't show) a Tom and Jerry cartoon to demonstrate the reality-warping effect of a bad self-insert character. I've even mentioned certain comic books to demonstrate what a bad plot twist is like. Hope this answers your question. --Doc

  9. Dat 2016 Room Block

*sigh* This is disappointing, but not the end of the world. More blocks will be opening later on, but make contingency plans. I reserved a room that's a short distance away. A little walking isn't going to kill me. That said, keep in mind that the Hyatt Passkey link works on a real-time system. As has been mentioned earlier, a lot can happen in 7 months. People cancel reservations for any number of reasons. And while there's no waiting list, sometimes it just takes a little bit of luck to get the room you want. --DocMui
  10. Dat 2016 Room Block

Well, fantastic. I knew that the rooms would go fast, but...the Hyatt is TOTALLY out in record time. The desk lady was very apologetic about it, but I don't blame the hotel staff. They're just doing their jobs. And, much like many others, I was a tad busy with this thing called work. I couldn't exactly sneak away to make a personal phone call until lunchtime and personal surfing is discouraged. So, yeah. Looks like I'll have to wait until the next block of rooms opens up. If they do. --DocMui
  11. Well, it's over a week since ACen has come and gone and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the attendees and panelists involved in my Fanfiction Panel. We had a pretty lively discussion and there weren't any AV issues. I do have to say, though, that 9:00 AM was probably too early in the morning for most people. I'm not complaining about the day, though. Saturday was just right, but my panelists did complain about being held back until about 8:50 AM or so before they could enter the panel area. They couldn't even wait outside our assigned room--which, while understandable (given the AV tech in each room), certainly made things inconvenient. One of my panelists has said, and I quote: "I realize they're trying hard to control chaos, but considering how much money everyone is paying to attend the con, I'd rather we be treated more like valued customers and less like army recruits." I did have an issue with one of my panelists, one which I have e-mailed Panel Programming privately about. Having said that, there were a lot of fanfiction-related panels this year. I like to think of my panel as being generally positive, with gentle ribbing at the foibles and follies that all writers eventually face. I'll be back next year, but I would like a slightly later time slot--perhaps an hour or two later, if possible? Once again, thanks to all who attended. --Doc

That said, is anybody interested in me posting the entire collection of presentations for the past Fanfiction Panels online somewhere? It might be a nice little reference. --Doc

  17. Call for Fanfiction Panelists

The panel has covered a variety of topics in the past, including the care and feeding of story characters (both original and established), plot-driven vs. character-driven stories, shippings/relationships and others. That's just the icebreaker topic. Basically, we cover many topics that deal with anime fanfiction and aren't 18+ in nature. What's the topic for this year? I'm leaning towards "balance." And yes, using a PM is just fine for sending info. --Doc
  18. Call for Fanfiction Panelists

Given that we are now in the middle of the holidays, I've decided to extend the deadline to January 15. So, for those of you who thought you missed it, you didn't. --Doc
  19. Well, another Fanfiction Panel has come and gone, and I think that it went pretty well. I honestly don't think that the time slot was bad, and the questions just kept coming from the audience. So, for those of you who attended, what did you like? What did you dislike? What do you think could be made better? I'm always looking for feedback. --Doc

Not even close. The panel discusses fanfiction in general, and we usually have a topic for the year. Come on and visit us if you're curious. --Doc
  22. Greetings, all! I ran the Fanfiction Panel this year--yes, the plain-sounding panel that was one of the three fanfic-related panels that actually showed up. Anyway, I would like your feedback if you attended. What worked? What didn't? Thanks for your time, Pearson "Doc" Mui

  24. Panel Programming Feedback Thread

About the only issue I had with my panel (Fanfiction Panel, 2:00 PM on Saturday) was the fact that there was a room change. I found out when I got over to the Doubletree, only to find that my panel had been moved to the Hilton. I'm surprised that I still maintained as much of an audience that I did. Oh, and the grid had my panel at the correct time, but the text description (page 51 in the program book) had the panel as being 2 hours instead of just one hour. While I wouldn't mind the extra time, I doubt that the "It's a Rumic World" panel would have taken it well. But that's just a minor glitch. I didn't have any real problem with my badge because I opted to pay for it at Kollision Con. Yes, I could have gone for a comp badge, but I'd had a horrible time at ACen 2010 when I tried to pick it up. Overall, though, the room was just fine, the projector and microphones worked, and the chairs were fairly comfy. The worker even brought me and all my panelists small cups of water, which I thought was considerate. Will the panel be back next year? I hope so. Otherwise some very unhappy panelists are going to talk to me about that. --Doc
