  1. First time panelist advice?

Dark Spellmaster really covered most of it! But a few additional tips Timing is VERY important. If you have a 1 hour panel, and come with only 30 minutes of material, you're in trouble. Likewise, if you have a 1 hour panel and 2 hours of material, you're equally in trouble as you try to rush through it and end up skipping things. Have your panel entirely planned out and then present it, even if you're just talking to an empty room, to time yourself. Rule of thumb is you'll talk faster and cover more in person, so if you time yourself at 50 minutes, you probably only have 40 minutes of material when really presenting. (There's some give and take here, as audience questions/participation may fill in your time gaps depending on the nature of your panel) And speaking of audience participation, do you WANT your audience engaged? Is this an informative panel where you really only want to talk to them and maybe take questions at the end? (Which is a valid way to run a panel, nothing wrong with it, how mine tends to go!) Or do you want back and forth? Do you want to be having a conversation with your audience? Plan accordingly time-wise and if you want them more engaged, you need questions or whatever else ready to get their attention and make them interact with you! For example "I really felt x way about this scene. Is there anyone who interpreted it differently?" Or a quick thing I'll do with my audience since my topic is broad is show them a picture of the anime/game I'm about to discuss and ask them to name it. I give them a little prize for being correct! Like Spellmaster said though, the most important things are to be prepared and to have fun. Know your material, but it's okay to admit you don't know something if someone has a really specific question. If you're smiling and having a good time and showing you really care about your topic, your audience will enjoy themselves too! If you're talking monotone, don't seem like you want to be there, or don't know you're stuff, people will tune out. And lastly, like I commented on the original topic, people WILL leave your panel. It's inevitable. For some it won't be what they thought. Others might have to go to some other engagement. Don't take it to heart. Don't pay them any mind, just keep on presenting for those who are staying and interested :)
  2. Welcome back to the forums everyone~

  3. My views on ACen 2017

Last year and the year before had PLENTY of room to move around. The aisles were much tighter this year than they have been previously, so your comment makes no sense.
  4. My views on ACen 2017

Overall, my two biggest gripes are the same as every year. 1) Guests. One Japanese VA doesn't really cut it ACen. Granted it was a great choice and I loved that a sieyuu's autograph line was PACKED for once instead of them sadly sitting there waiting to see if anyone showed up. But still, ACen should be getting at LEAST 2-3 seiyuu, and myself and others would kill to see a current relevant manga-ka ( doesn't need to be some crazy big name, but someone whose work has been made into an anime would be nice). I was also disappointed with the English VAs. Swasey was the only "new-to-ACen" VA. There are still plenty of high profile guests ACen has yet to have in my 11 years of attending (Jerry Jewell, Luci Christian, and Eric Vale, to name a few), so it'd be REALLY nice to see some more variety. 2) Photoshoots. Not even going to get in to this here since we all know leading up to the shoots was a crap show this year, but I DO expect next year to be better as they've claimed there will be changes in staff :) I definitely agree with Randy that Special Needs was top notch this year! I had quite a few staff recognize me from previous years (particularly those in autographs, haha), and they were all super accommodating. I had a few issues with the red coats letting me in through exits and the like (was with my nearly-due pregnant friend and we needed to get through to the bathroom ASAP), but once you get them to actually see your disability badge they were fine. I loved loved loved how well autographs were handled and that the staff fought off those trying to line up early (even if it doesn't really apply to me anymore). But something needs to be done for guests like Crispin Freeman. There was a crowd of probably 200 sunday hoping for his autograph, and no matter what staff did they of course couldn't chase them off. Staff did their best to control everyone, but despite their best efforts, it was still a mad dash to get in Crispin's line when the line came and those of us in Special Needs had to try and not get trampled. Not sure what the best way to go about this is, but something needs to be done about lines for high profile guests. Maybe a ticketing system or something, I don't know. I personally didn't like the idea of the concerts being outside in a public place where you can't differentiate those there for the con/concert and those not. Plus the fact that it was rainy and cold and no one knew if the concerts were even going to happen. I didn't go due to scheduling/not wanting to freeze, but I heard they went pretty well. Some more thought needs to be put into outdoor concerts if they intend to hold them again I think. Signage for the photoshoots was a GREAT idea! But they weren't out early enough Friday and people were confused on where the heck rain locations were since those descriptions were very vague. Love the idea, just needs slightly better implementation. Artist Alley was WAY too small. You could barely get through the aisles. It also felt like due to being shoved back there, there were less artists total? I can't be certain, but it was definitely cramped and felt like less artists. I also heard there was some kind of lottery system being used for artist this year which got a lot of backlash. Can't say much since I don't know much, but that may be something to look at and reconsider. I thankfully didn't have any shoots in the area, but I was told the dealer hall shoots were a mess due to being right next to the Bang Zoom booth. People couldn't hear shoot runners. Those two things should not be located next to each other in following years. Panel programming tech people were AWESOME! All 3 panels I were in was smooth sailing, had people assisting us before we started to make sure everything worked. Ran into an issue with my computer not playing through the speakers properly, and the staff assisting me knew exactly how to fix it :) Shoutout to those tech savvy people keeping panels running smooth! So I have a lot of gripes but most of them were pretty minor and I really did enjoy ACen overall :) I think I'd also go with 8/10.
  5. Cosplay Progress 2017 Edition

Yikes, less than two months left until the con. How's everyone doing this year? Rider (Fate//Stay Night) - Need to order the cosplay and make the props Chris (Yuri on Ice) - All material bought, wig dyed, and started on the shirt...long way left to go. Little Devil and Sunny Day Song Maki - Needs some small fixes Spicy Zen - 100% done, bless.
  6. Cosplay Progress 2017 Edition

I got roped into a last minute change of plans and spent yesterday night binge-making a prop and styling a wig :') All that's left are to sew these two thing together, mod a hat a bit (hopefully not more than an hour of work total), then PACKING. The con basically starts tomorrow after work for me. Good luck everyone! May your cosplays be complete enough that you're not hot-glueing them together in the hotel.
  7. Cosplay Progress 2017 Edition

All of my cosplays are officially DONE! Just need to work on a few panel things and pack now. Good luck everyone! You can do it!
  8. Lines at ACen?

For big events, such as the masquerade, you better be there early if you want a half decent seat. Same for panels for popular guests. Less popular guests and regular (non-industry) panels you shouldn't have any trouble getting into even if you show up 5 minutes before they start. But if you want a decent seat, you should show up at least 30 minutes beforehand. The only area I've seen ACen consistently stick to the rules is the autograph area for the past 2 years. They will NOT let you line up more than 30 minutes early (or maybe it's 45 now like Kirby said, so double check). People linger in the area nearby (and are chased away and threatened with badge removal), but the actual line won't start until 30mins beforehand so you can actually go enjoy the con and not sit in line for 2 hours.
  9. Cosplay Progress 2017 Edition

I finished (re)styling my Chris wig last night and it turned out so perfect I could cry. Did a make-up test and am super pleased with the results~ Costest~ All that's left are some modifications on other outfits. We're in the home stretch! You look great! I have a friend doing Wonderful Rush Hanayo, hopefully you guys run into each other ^^
  10. Cosplay Progress 2017 Edition

Just over a week left to go! Keep breathing, put bandaids on those rotary scissors injuries, rub some neosporin into those hot glue gun burns, and don't give up! Final stretch! I had to finish a commission before I could get back to my own work, but thankfully the commission should be wrapped up today, and I can get back to my own cosplays! Just need to style some wigs, hot/super glue a few delicate pieces of my bought cosplay, make a few sewing alterations, and DONE. And then packing @.@ Just bought myself another set of packing cubes. Packing cubes are a LIFESAVER, and I totally recommend them to everyone. You can pack one cosplay per cube and all of the pieces will be there and ready instead of randomly thrown throughout your bags. And they use up less space in your bags so you can pack MORE. (These are the ones I use, if anyone is interested)
  11. GOUK is holding an open call for models!

I was wondering if you could confirm the date of the GOUK fashion show? I was accepted to model and they claimed the show was Saturday, but ACen schedules have it for Friday. Just want to avoid confusion! I replied to their email asking as well, but they have yet to get back to me.
  12. If anything, I think you'd only have to worry about the musical guests (who sometimes require you to purchase a CD at the con) and MAYBE Toru Furuya? I don't think Toru would require it though, but maybe bring an autograph board just in case? I know Nabeshin could care less what he signs, same with all of the English guests (though typically they won't sign bootlegs and the like, of course). I'm not staff though. Hope you get a real answer, but I don't think the staff really finds out about these things until the day of con.
  13. Question regarding the concerts....

I'm also curious what the plan is...the MB Park isn't that big of an area. And there's nothing blocking it off, that's totally public space, so anyone can attend, badge or not. I hope they'll have some type of makeshift stage/barrier to separate the audience from the performers. Especially for Gacharic Spin, can't really put drums on the grass xD
  14. Cosplay Progress 2017 Edition

Progress is progress, no matter how little! I ordered the last few little pieces I forgot I didn't already have, so my cosplays are sooo close to being done! (Or, they will be on May 5th when the stuff comes in lol)
  15. GOUK is holding an open call for models!

Sounds good! Thanks for the speedy reply :)
  16. GOUK is holding an open call for models!

Is there going to be a second open call for Putumayo, or will they draw from the same pool of applicants?
  17. ACen 2017 Cosplay Gatherings Schedule

Hello knives. After a quick comparison AND finding most of the shoot runners on Facebook and checking with them, the following discrepancies in the schedule have been found. In addition, myself and others are curious as to why two shoots were added after the cutoff and after you insisting their could not be a shoot unless someone applied to run it.
  18. Cosplay Progress 2017 Edition

Christophe is FINALLY done. Going to do a full makeup/cosplay test tonight to make sure nothing falls out of place, but he should be good to go. Besides a few small fixes on other cosplays, all that's left is to make Rider's blades. I thought I had a bunch of worbla left, but I can't find it anywhere (moved recently), so had to order more and pray it comes in with enough time for me to make those @.@ We're on the final leg guys! Less than a month to go! Buckle down, you can do it!
  19. Guidebook 2017

I take screenshots of the "my day" or whatever it's called page to avoid the cell phone issue. Last year was a nightmare since my phone refused to connect through anything but wifi. (turned out to was because my phone half installed an update on Thursday night and needed to be restarted to work properly but of course I didn't figure that out until Sunday afternoon :P) But yeah, taking screenshots of your plans helps in case there are service issues. If nothing else, your phone makes for a nice clock haha.
  20. Cosplay Progress 2017 Edition

Christophe is like 95% done! All that's left is sewing the wig back together xD And waiting on the face paint for him to show up... Rider came in and I adjusted the pieces a bit to fit me, all that's left is making the daggers. My other cosplays need some small fixes but shouldn't take more than like an hour We're in the home stretch guys, go go go! There will be someone who gets it, don't worry! I want as a human version of Plue from Rave Master/Fairy Tail one year and literally the only clue was his "beak" thing on my face, the rest looked super generic. But a few people still got it!
  21. ACen 2017 Cosplay Gatherings Schedule

Hello everyone! I managed to find someone who happened to copy the photoshoot schedule shortly before it was removed ^^ Hopefully it's completely up to date, let me know if you notice any issues. I think it should be good since the 30min shoots are there and my shoot's time change is there and that was one of the last edits made. ACen 2017 Photoshoots If knives won't be transparent, I sure as hell will :)
  22. ACen 2017 Cosplay Gatherings Schedule

What information would you be "accidentally" giving out? The times and dates that shoot hosts requested for and you swore up and down would no longer be changing? What "impotent" news is preventing you from sharing the schedule as-is? As things are now, if I were to ask you what time and day my shoots were, you'd tell me you can't say, and that's ridiculous. NEVER in the history of ACen has the photoshoot gatherings been hidden like this. I've run photoshoots all around the US, and attended them around the world (Japan cons are lovely places) and I've seen a LOT of badly run gatherings, but NONE half as bad as ACen this year.
  23. ACen 2017 Cosplay Gatherings Schedule

At least 5 Facebook posts a day: "Does X have a photoshoot?" "When is X photoshoot?" "Where is X photoshoot?" Literally everyone but knives: "Well, gee...wouldn't it be great if there was some type of document that made this information available to the public..."
  24. Disabling airsoft gun for prop uses?

You can either take it apart and remove the trigger mechanism or you can usually zip tie the trigger back.
  25. ACen 2017 Cosplay Gatherings Schedule

You'll keep us updated on something that has already been made but you no longer feel like sharing with the general populace? How kind. Vary impotent info? How much does the info vary by? Hopefully not a wide margin. And man it really sucks that it's impotent...should probably have that checked by a doctor. I don't know about you, but I prefer my info to be potent.
