  1. I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad time, and as someone with a number of medical conditions who also uses an accessibility pass, I would have been upset, too, if a staff member ignored my pass! Being on staff does NOT give someone the right to dismiss an attendee's accommodations. I hope your experience doesn't ruin your opinion of staff as a whole, because the majority want nothing more than for ACen to be successful and fun. In fact, the ADA Compliance staff singlehandedly turned my weekend around a couple years ago when I was feeling very down about a medical limitation, and I'll always be grateful for their support. Unfortunately, a coat check would be difficult to implement. I can't speak on behalf of M.A.P.S. or ACen, but my understanding as an attendee at other cons is that coat checks are mostly unheard of. Salt Lake Comic Con has a coat check, for example, but it's run by an entirely separate charity foundation for arthritis. I think it's a great idea, but it would take some planning before it's possible. There'd be a lot to consider, such as liability, finance, location, etc. I imagine there would need to be a brand new department for that to even happen, but that's just me speculating. Temperature in the dealer hall is also something beyond M.A.P.S. or ACen's immediate control. We can't exactly just say to the convention center that we'd like them to adjust the temperature (I'm not even sure who would be in charge of that), particularly because everyone's preferences are different. My department is located in the dealer hall so I totally empathize!

  3. 2015 Guest Feedback

I know I for one am guilty of forgetting to check the forums because I'll spend so much time communicating with other staff that it falls to the bottom of my list of priorities, and I think that must be the case for many other staffers. Personally I can't say much as to our overall operations, but as with every year, our staff are busy year round, and every year comes with a unique set of needs. Whether or not it's a rough year can vary widely between departments, and that's without even accounting for our officers and board members. So, in a sense, it's always a rough year for at least some members of staff, but it may not always be rough in the way one might expect. Because ACen depends entirely on volunteers, there are certain challenges that are bound to arise, so some of our priorities might not translate to the actual convention weekend in an obvious way. A huge concern we run into every year is simply trying to make sure every department has enough staffers to run smoothly; even now we're looking for people to fill out our application, and con starts in 10 days! My biggest recommendation for attendees who want to see ACen improve is simply to get involved, whether it's by leading a cosplay gathering, running a panel, joining one of our departments as a staffer, or setting a positive example for younger attendees. At the end of the day, we all just want to have a good time and make the most of the best weekend of the year. :)

Ken, I seriously nearly just cried because of the FMA panel. I'm not even kidding.

  8. ACEN Cosplay Fitness thread!

How's everybody doing? Personally I think I'm getting more used to this whole workout thing. I'm certainly feeling more confident. Biked a total of 3 hours this weekend and I've also been doing Just Dance on my Wii. I'm going to try some new exercises tomorrow that one of my friends recommended to me. Anyway, I hope you're all doing well!
  9. Contact Lense Question

Personally, I'm wearing the same contacts this year as last year, but I got them pretty close to con. I agree with Akushou, keep them hydrated and retire them when they become uncomfortable. That's probably horrible advice and my optometrist would probably cringe and say to follow the rules, but I've found my own contacts to be surprisingly durable (like rescued-from-shriveling durable).
  10. Countdown From A Million!

984,644 Honestly the first time I did it, I thought it was a joke. Turns out narcolepsy is mostly just being really sleepy all the time.
