oh golly I am nervous but HI HELLO! let me tell you about my panel!

I am a Gender and Women’s Studies recent grad who does work around trans* identity. I am a cis ally/trans* advocate. I came into this panel after realizing that while trans* folk are “represented” in anime, many real transgender narratives aren’t as prominent.Often, trans* people exist as magical beings, and…well, that’s kind of bogus.

My panel is about slice of life trans* narratives in anime.

If you’re attending, please come and be my best friend give me good feedback and ask loads of questions! I’ve been working on it for a few months and I’m in no way encyclopedic in my knowledge on Japanese trans* folk.

The most serious work on this topic that I can name is Takako Shimura's series Wandering Son. There was an anime adaptation, though it covered only a small portion of the manga.

Apart from this, I'm not sure what to recommend. For instance, Strawberry Eggs is mostly a comedy/fanservice series. But despite this, the (much missed!) audio program Anime Round Table and Review had some positive things to say about it, and even thought it had some genuine trans* drama.

Cool to hear that there's a panel like this. In anime, I've really only seen transgender "used" for fetishism or comedy, so this sounds like a pretty refreshing take on the subject.

I hope I'll be able to attend!

Hi! If you still check:

I REALLY wanted to go see your panel!
My brother and I had arrived a few minutes late and we thought, it'll be okay.
But when we opened the door...! It was packed in there. No space to lean against
the wall, or even on the floor without covering someone's view.
We ended up leaving because the door wouldn't close either and we didn't want
someone to come in and start kicking people out or something. We weren't too sure
what would happen.

Please, if you do decide to do this panel again (and I hope you do), maybe
getting a bigger room?

Oh, and one thing I noticed before I left (T_T)

1. your PowerPoint slide had a lot of writing for just one slide. Maybe breaking that
information into many? It's easier on the eyes and reader. You know, in case someone
didn't hear/catch something. They could look back on the slide in an ordered manner
instead of clunky paragraphs. (Just speaking for that one slide I saw)

2. You were reading off the slide so you weren't looking at the people. Making more
eye contact and not reading directly from the slides would work more and you could
engage with the audience more. I know you said you were nervous (I would too! I'm not
a presentation person) but I think that it would make your panel more interesting
and alluring.

I hope to see you back next year? It would be awesome!
