I'm in the agreement that unless you know a person (well, like this person wouldn't de-friend you for doing it) you really shouldn't pounce someone from behind or even in front of them, lol. It may be done in good humor buy like the stories that were shared here say people have either been hurt or have had things broken (a camera of any kind isn't cheap.) Fortunately for myself, every con attendee I have run into who has wanted to give me a hug has usually given me a big smile and asked Can I give you/get a hug?" For that, I'm perfectly fine with it. Just don't run at or behind the person. If they say no, well don't do it, they have their reasons.

You sound like me. Back in 2010, I had a really, really huge girl glomp me. At the time, I was around 105-110 pounds (I'm about 130 now), and I was wearing a corset. The girl f-ing attack/glomped me - and she was at least a good 250. I was nearly knocked to the floor. But I would be wrong to beat her butt into the middle of next year, right?

They need to penalize glomping the same way they penalized the Yaoi paddles.

I totally agree with the whole glomping thing. I have only glomped once. The situation though was a controlled situation. I was a friend to the person, we had planned it out so neither of us were holding anything important, and we had let the people around us know what was going on so they didn't get in the way.

On the other hand, I have been glomped against my permission while I was in my Mana cosplay. I wasn't warned by the girl or anything. The girl who did the glomping was wearing high heels, came up from behind me and wrapped her feet around my waist. Her heels had gotten caught in my skirt's tulle since she had knocked me over (I was also wearing MaryJane Platforms that raised me 6"). Because of that, the girl had ripped my cosplay and I had no time to fix it before the photoshoot because that was where I was heading. Before I could talk to her, she had ran off not even caring. I ended up walking away with tears because I was in pain and my costume was ruined. There was no way of reporting her to IRT because I couldn't get her badge name at all. Luckily, I had my medication with me since regular pain meds don't work on me.

antisocialist - If it is reported IRT will take it seriously. It's unwanted physical contact and can cause injury like in Nanashigurl01's case. Even if you don't have a name/badge name you can report their description, in case someone else reports them and they are caught, we will know if they have done it multiple times.

Ditto the above. "...anything to risk the safety of others" is against our rules as a general comment, and I'll talk to folks about touching other congoers without permission being worked in there somehow for next year. Wording not so much as stated here, but that's the sentiment. Simply put, jumping on a stranger is already banned by default because it is not legal. That's called assault. It is the unwelcomed act of putting your hands or other bits on someone without their consent.

So, glomping is the act of Jumping/mid air hugging some stranger? I personally don't like being touched without permission, or see one of my friends be "felt" up. I feel like some con goers are over enthused, and feel it is okay to randomly jump people ^^. Now i know some people don't mind, and even welcome it (carrying signs saying free hugs and glomps, which is cool). Overall, I think people should just keep their hands (tentacles, props/ assorted limbs) to themselves unless they know the person or are comfortable with it.

Hey friend...I hate to say this because ACen ain't going to help. I suggest you get some muscle to back you up. I can help you if you want. I got some muscles and I know how to push people off. I really feel that is your best bet. Because not everyone has been glomp badly like you.
Ummm....I'm going to take you to court!

I partially agree.

I'm not the biggest fan of being glomped, but that's because it's happened in the past a lot. One year, I had a cosplay that was very armor oriented. It was made out of numerous materials, some of which could be easily broken. I was walking around in said cosplay, and next thing I know, someone glomps me from behind. Now, I would NOT have minded as much if I wasn't in cosplay. But, in the process of them glomping me, they had crushed a good portion of the armor I had spent a lot of time creating. Safe to say, I was pretty upset. This has happened multiple times, and now I feel like I have to watch my back everywhere I go just to make sure someone doesn't jump me rofl.

Anyways, if somebody wants to hug someone, act the same way as if you want to take a picture of them/with them. Ask. That's all you need to do. That way, problems can be skipped WAY ahead of time, and people might not make some angry cosplayer enemies. At least in my position lol.

My natural reaction to something/someone rushing at me is to repel said object. Glomping just screams bad idea to me. Ask me for a hug, sure. Rush at me without warning, I guarantee instinct. It seems pretty common sense to me, when we're taught about respect and personal space as children.
