I mainly watched American cartoons until about 98 when I fell in love with anime at the age of 12.

Most people seem to get into it younger than that.

I had WATCHED anime before that, but it was 98 when I became an anime fiend.

I believe Gigantor and G-Force were my first animes, though I wasn't aware that it was anime at the time.

Knowing what anime was (after the TurboDuo and Y's Book I and II, thank you), Fist of the North Star on VHS from Streamline Pictures was my next venture into animeland with Akira right afterwards (both purchased from Media Play, remember that place?).

I may have seen anime I didn't know they were anime, but when it first hit me like a brick wall was around 1996-2000:

- Dragonball Z - I remember watching the Namek Saga on syndication, ONE EPISODE A WEEK... And then it ended around the Ginyu fight. A year or two later, when we got cable, I was reintroduced to DBZ on Toonami (jumped ahead to Trunks Saga), and times were GOOD.

- Pokemon appeared on Kids WB around this time, but I felt like it was too kiddie for my tastes (I was always mature for my age, LOL B) )

- SciFi Channel's Saturday anime - This is how I really got into the more mature anime. Every weekend, I'd see different movies/features. Most notably Akira, Galaxy Express 999, Robot Carnival, Demon City Shinjuku, Project A-Ko (the only girls-in-short-skirts anime I LOVE), Dominion Tank police, and more.

- Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim locked in my love for anime for good.

Pokemon isn't entirely directed at kids. It was hacked up and repackaged by English dub companies into a kids show. Just like many other anime, such as Yu-Gi-Oh, Sailor Moon and many others.

Anything Kids WB threw at me, I watched.
My whole anime obsession started with (big surprise) Pokémon.
I LOVED POKEMON. Loved it. Games, cards, everything. I still
love Pokémon, as do most people on here. As I grew older, the
anime I watched got more mature. Pokemon to Digimon to
Yu-Gi-Oh! (still LOVE that show), and then the occasional DBZ
at my cousins' house.

Then I moved from elementary to middle school and got into
the really popular stuff like Chobits, Fruits Basket, Gravitation, and,
sorry to say, Inu-Yasha. -wince- I'm sorry. That was a phase in my
anime career where I had no idea what was going on and just sort
of watched things. Please focus more on my childhood, since I was
smarter and watched better things. XDD Oh! Middle school also
introduced me to Hellsing, which I currently still am loving.

Starting high school, I think I took a break from anime for a little
while. It wasn't until my junior year that I started watching it
more, and this time I watched shows I SHOULD be watching
at my age, like Ghost in the Shell, which was/is freaking amazing.

There were some random series' thrown in between, like Akira,
and random things on Adult Swim like Cowboy Bebop and FLCL.

...I know I'm missing a crapload more, but whatever. You get the idea. XD

The first anime that I watched that I actually knew was an anime was InuYasha. I remember I saw it on Adult Swim a looong time ago and I wanted to know what it was. My friend told me it was an anime, just like Sailor Moon and DBZ were.

But before that I remember the first manga I ever read was Rurouni Kenshin. Boy the memories I had when I first learned of anime and manga XD

I wanna say I started watching it around when I started high school, when I was 14-15 years old. I remember my friend got me into it and ever since then I have been corrupted.

My mom rented a lot of Korean and Japanese cartoons at the Korean video store since I was in kindergarten. The first show I remember to be anime was Galaxy Express 999. I didn't even know that most of what I was watching was made in Japan since it was all in Korean dub.

I guess my first one would be technically Pokemon even though I did not know it at the time.
Then I didnt really get into anime until my freshman year of high school.

Technically the first anime I saw was either Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, or Cardcaptors. Though the first series that I actively watched was Pokemon.

It's a toss up between Speed Racer and "Tranzor Z" as far as my earliest goes. I think I picked'em up at the same time when Speed was on in syndication.

I actually remember seeing a bit of Sailor Moon in St. Louis in the late 90's. But the funny thing about it was it was airing on the local Home Shopping Network, broadcasting from East St. Louis!

I couldn't remember the years but it started with the reruns of Voltron. I wasn't an avid watcher just watched it once in a while. I remember though "Borrowing" video8 tapes of Guyver back in the 4th or 5th grade about 14 years ago.

Technically, I've been watching anime for like... ever, but I don't really count the early stuff since I didn't know it was anime. I first got into it in 1998 when I watched the ten year anniversary of Akira. I still have Vampire Hunter D, Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie, Macross Plus, and like a billion others on VHS. In about 2003, I got rid of nearly half my collection and really wish I hadn't.
