I know last year, I read some murmurings on this but I'm not sure if it ever happened.
Basically, I'm interested in doing or attending a 21+ gathering at Acen 2009. I'll be 28 come ACen '09 and I find every year it gets harder and harder to make friends with similar interests to mine.
I'd like to have some more buddies to go to conventions with, do cosplays with and hang out in general.
Would any of you old folks be interested in a gathering like this?

Depending on the actual dates of Acen 09 I may or may not be able to go. If its on or after thr 14th or May I can get in otherwise Ill be mere days away(which sucks royally)

Well according to the average age poll 24 is ancient.

Last year this didn't really work, it was going to be held on Saturday night at like 11pm and was planned a week before the con. Most people had met groups by then and were hanging around with them by that point. A dinner meet up time on Friday would work better, people who are not going Friday do to work are out, and you still have plenty of time to hang out with new friends.

Out here in Rochester I got a group together for a bi-monthly adult anime group. It works out great we each bring new anime each time and watch about 10 eps or so. Do to the age group most of the anime titles are Seinen and Josei which is nice, but you do get to see shows you wouldn't think of looking at.

I know I seen that topic post and got a laugh out of the very skewed groupings...

I just turned 21 about a month ago. Guess I'm old now. Don't really act or feel like it though.

Dunno about going to a 21+ gathering. I'll see how I feel in a few months.

This isn't about maturity level. There's a whole lot of immature 20 year olds, 30 year olds and on up. Age isn't an indication of maturity.
I don't mind hanging out with folks younger than me, that's not the problem. I'd just like to meet and get to know some folks closer to my age is all

This does seem like a good idea because as most of you have been saying: finding "older" anime fans irl can be difficult... this is somewhat beyond me as most people I speak to frequently on the Net are older than me. This does of course show that fans in this age group are out there... a gathering of this type would get you guys together well. Friday also does seem like a good new friend making day as someone posted because later on people are often distracted with their new friends...

You can count me in. Just make sure if it is at a bar chances are the Hyatt will only have the red bar open.

It's always hard to find ladies my age, in particular. I'm 27 and let's face it, most gals around me my age are raising a couple of kids by now or getting set to have some or working on careers.
I'm not a kid person. I'm not even a very good housewife, that's for sure! XD
It's not that I mind hanging out with younger folks, mind you. Sure I'm not as up on bands nowadays or television anymore, but I can jabber about movies, anime and such with the best of them.
Haha, but you'd be surprised at the amount of them that get along with you, then hear your age and balk. I guess thats kind of influence by the face that I have a baby face and don't look my age, though.

One reason I asked about this is because I'm horrendous at meeting new people. What can I say, I'm still shy! I warm up though, if you give me time.

It was a joke dude lol Just like you said though, meeting people my own age is nice but I haven't met anyone new in a very long time. I'll feel the need to change that eventually but until then, not yet.

I remember trying this last year and it didn't really pan out. I think we set up a time and date to meet at the hotel bar, except when I got there, it was pretty dead and the closest thing to a meet-up was a group of like 6 or 8 at a table.

I am excited to try again though. I ain't getting any younger.

It's hard to say if this will go over or not most people that go are under 21 but there's a lot that
are over 21 (you have to look hard to find them heh heh)

iamthemurderer, you could be me posting. It can be tough to find people our age to talk to if you don't want to hear about their kid's potty training. I was going to go to last year's but lost track of time.
Last week I had a near brush with parent-talk: I had found two neo-natal kittens in my garage and found a home for them. Then I was asking how they were, and the new owner started to tell me about how she is litterbox training them. When she started to describe their poops, I had to get out of that conversation! I love those kittens and I'm happy they're growing up, but I am still too young to talk about a good BM.

Many of the older people (including myself) tried to meet up but only a small group showed BEFORE last call, thus not a real big turnout. The key to a promising turnout would be to have it earlier. Personaly I would rather have it on Friday night, but well see when it becomes closer.

I'm interested. I'll be...28 *hangs head* by the next ACen, and it'd be nice to meet some non-hyper con-goers.

Just let me know when and where and I will try to be there.

I'll be 22 by next Acen. Depending on what else is in my schedule, I shall try to make this.

I'm just not a kid person. And typically, if you find a lady my age (I'll be 28 as well, MetalGravy, I'll bring us a pair of rocking chairs X3), she's deep in the forest of childcare and child raising. Since I don't have children myself, we end up not having any common interests.
Back when I was on the dating scene, I can't tell you the number of guys with kids who apparently didn't understand it when I said I wasn't looking for a step-parent relationship. It was like they were out to prove that their child was special and that I would love them.

I can understand where you are coming from as I am in my thirties and not looking to have kids. It seems like down here the women start having kids fresh out of high school.

where was i when this thread started? i dont remember ive been looking for this for the longest and i feel the same way about making friends my age and majority of my friends are with kids and when the conversation starts about child birth i walk away cause i dont relate. so it would be great to be around someone without kids
ive not had no problem with being around my younger counterparts but their energy is way higher than mine
it would be nice to have a meetup like this every once in a while before Con but i know how hard it is with us old folks and our busy lifestyles and some of you guys live outside of chicago.

I love the younger kids, haha. I'm always amused by the expressions when they realized your age, if they don't guess it offhand first.
My husband recently started back to college at the age of 29 and turned 30 shortly in to his first semester. During one of his freshmen english classes, he mentioned in a group how I had helped him on a report. "You have a wife?!?! But you're too young for that." So he had a fun game of asking them how old they thought he was.
Everyone thought he was their age, 18-19 or so. My husband got a real ego boost. XD

Last year didn't happen most likely cause the person who was "organizing" it is pretty much a failure in that department. Which is why I never bothered to look into it last year cause I knew it wouldn't happen. But yeah, if someone wants to organize something for this year I'll pop my head in assuming I don't have other plans at the time. Just remember the most important part of event planning is communication...make sure people know exactly when and where it is.

I think it would be a nice idea. I kind of understand that us older folks are busy, and that's probably why organizing the gathering would be difficult. But, I can kind of relate to being with people my age. When my older sister was my age, she already married and had kids only two years afterward. Another one of my older sisters had babies when she was 21. I'll be 24 in June '09. And a lot of adults my age are already thinking about marriage and kids, and I'm just thinking of where I wanna eat this evening. And I can kind of relate to the younger kids, too--I'm still in that 'my parents are LAME' phase. However, lots of younger otaku say 'blah blah, I hate cheerleaders, blah blah, popular people suck' and it gets annoying.

ill be 26, most of the people i will be with are over 21. lets do this.

21+? Totally, I'm down for that as I've been looking to go some place where I could meet folks who enjoy what I do, but not leave with a migraine and even less want to get up the next day for work. Just be warned, if it's booze, don't expect me to tank easily, also expect jokes if I end up reaching that level as I love to be a comedian.
