Glad to see that 3rd Strike is still on. I was getting worried. 3S, CvS2, DDR, MK:DD, T5, maybe GGXX#R and PPP...my girlfriend is gonna have to put a cap on what I can and cannot enter. ;P
Any details on any of the tourneys yet? Like...
Single elim or double elim for the competition games (fighters/puzzle/DDR)?
For PPP, is it tech, freestyle, or para routine?
For DDR, will there BE a freestyle?
Which are on console and which are on arcade? And are the arcade ones pay-per-play during the tourney?
Can we use our own sticks for the console fighting game tourneys? (Or during casual play, for that matter?)

But how popular would those tourneys be? Besides, I can't see how you'd do a tourney except by score attack, and problem with most shooters, it's pure pattern memorization.
OH SHI+S Guitar Freaks AND RPS. I'm so down.

Console, all "console unique" characters will be banned (Heihaci, Spawn, Link).

Not that I'm entering or anything, but I figure others will wanna know about this, so...what about Necrid, Lizardman, Assassin, Berserker, Sophitia, and Seung Mina? I trust Necrid is banned, but the next three are toss-ups most places (Lizardman for his throw glitch), and I've seen tourneys with the last two not allowed (but they're rare).

Popular enough that most people under 20 wouldn't bother to enter. In tournies I've been to before, the shooter section was one of the most popular because on certain games it did give people a good chance to get a reasonable score.

And DDR, Guitar Freaks, Beatmania, Pop n Music, etc are different in this respect in exactly what way? If someone can play DDR without looking at the screen and get a near perfect score then that's pattern memorization, like to see someone do that with a shooter...
Shooters you could use include Psyvariar, Raiden DX, Gradius V, Warning Forever, hell even Star Force if you wanted it not to be pattern memorization. A good shooter is about twitch play rather then learning all the patterns, but then again more or less all games are about learning and remembering something...

I don't see it being very popular. You make a good point with the pattern memorization comparison to Bemani, but Bemani games are attractive games to play (dancing and making music is pretty fun).In this day and age, people don't really play shooters, let alone watch other people play shooters in a tournament.
Acen 2k2 - Fanboyed it up FTW!
Acen 2k3 - Masters-bator FTW!
Acen 2k4 - Bridget FTW!
Acen 2k5 - Alcohol induced Vomiting FTW!
Acen 2k6 - ????? FTW!

Is this contending that the majority-decided popular is better? That there is no room for fun in teaching a new generation the twitch-skills we grew up with? I, for one, think watching a master play through an impossible-looking shooter is a lot more impressive than a couple amatures jumping around on a dance pad. When you just barely maneuver through a maze of slow-moving shots successfully, it has a lot more intensity than ending a 300-chain of perfect dance moves. It feels like there is that much more at stake--if you lose, you don't just lose, but you die. You explode in a fiery little graphic of destruction.
I'm definately up for seeing a shooter tournament next year--GameOn, if you set up GradiusV or some other shooter in the console room, I'll definately try to keep an eye out for a few games, even if there is no official tournament, and even though I plan on spending almost all of my game room time practicing SPF2T arcade (since it's that much slower than the Dreamcast version--me, I'm a speed demon in the DC version, my record knocking a skilled friend out in 22 seconds).
