Now ACen is over and hopefully everyone has returned home safely, I just wanna say thank you to those who come to my panel this Saturday. Whether it is your first or 2nd time coming to this panel, I am really grateful about your participation since as I mentioned during the panel, you guys make it possible. Nothing is more enjoyable in a panel when you have such a responsive audience like you guys who yell and laugh in excitement during the panel :3 There were some technical issue at the beginning so some awesome videos I meant to show eventually have to be skipped, but I think overall the panel is done smoothly and at least this year we have a big room to hold everyone who wanna join, unlike last year.
Of course, despite this being my 3rd time running, I am more than certain there are things to improve on. This year, I tried to add more stuff to discuss so chances are some of you might want me to address some aspect of the VN with more depth, or perhaps skip some stuff that everyone already knows etc. I am open to your thought here so please speak it out, so hopefully we can have more fun next year!

Also, if any of you are interested in my visual novel or my VN commentary, feel free to check out following links:

Oh, and allow me to share this CG from Ever17. Why are they holding a big butt fish? Hell would I know~

Stayed at the panel for a while, talked about Ever 17 (which, as I said, is out of print and crazy-expensive on Amazon or eBay), and answered a fan's question about Heartache 101. After a couple of video and sound clips were played, I left. Not in anger or anything -- I wanted to stay longer. Unfortunately, I had plans to catch up with a friend at a photoshoot of a recent popular series...

What sort of things were shown later on during the panel? What sort of topics were discussed?

Anyway, this was one of two VN-related panels that I attended. Somehow, ACen had several this year! Mangagamer's panel was also decent. The other 18+ one sounded interesting, but it happened hours after I ran out of energy. Finally, I was seriously thinking about attending one of the otome game panels, but I had too many schedule conflicts.

The person who carried around a box of imports (and a few translations) around ACen 2013 had a booth in the dealers room this year as "Visual Novels USA." Did he drop by this panel?

Hi, thanks for the response. Not exactly sure which point u left, but since u mentioned Ever17, I would assume you were at the section when I was discussing different elements of VN that makes us enjoy them.
Rest of the panel is mostly about how story telling works in VN, and what trend has been in place.(Like how story become more a central element of VN over time, how dark stories like Saya no Uta become a thing for VN, why yaoi is such a popular sub genre for otome games etc)
Then I briefly discuss my personal experience with creating VN as well as my hope about the future of VN development within USA.
I did go to that other VN panel called Porn with Plot(which is like 3AM in the morning so totally understandable that u can't make it, I fall asleep at other panels before the time comes too) It is a good panel, covering stuff that I don't really cover in my own. (I am not a fan of nukige unless the story really impresses me, so it is nice to hear from people who genuinely enjoy them and share their thoughts of it)
As for Visual Novel USA, if we are thinking the same person, I think he did show up to my panel last year in Sakutaro cosplay from Umineko. Though be honest with you, I am glad he didnt come this year since last year he attempts to sell his games during my panel...but I appreciate how he did bring tons of VN physical copies for my panel demonstration though.

I attended your panel and would just like to say overall I was really into it (I even got candy!). Visual Novels are really an under appreciated part of Japan otaku culture and not nearly enough people understand much of anything about them. It's very refreshing to have a panel that isn't based around popular fandoms, video games (mainstream), or k-pop for once. I had to leave early around 15 minutes before it was scheduled to end because of some conflicting agendas though.

My suggestions on improvement would be to perhaps spice up the panel with more things that more than just explanation. For example maybe save before a funny (spoiler free, of course) scene in a VN and play through it for 5-10 min for some fun. When you had the screencap of an eroge from Oreimo and asked the audience which one they would pick I thought that that could be a good idea to actually have the audience make a choice in an actual VN through a show of hands, preferably a choice where each option yields interesting results.

Those are some ideas I had feel free to try or turn away them as you wish. Hope to see what new things you bring to the table next year.

Thanks for the feedback! There are more videos that I planned to show during the panel, but due to technical difficulty, I have to switch to a replacement one(thanks to the gentleman that offers the help!) so as the result some videos can't be transferred in time. I also hope there would be more discussion on some commentary I made, but I feel I still need to work harder to encourage people sharing their thoughts, because I know some points I made probably isn't widely agreed among VN fans haha

The "Let's Play VN" idea sounds cool. In fact, in the older version of this panel I did think about actually demoing the game I make and let the audience make decisions about it. I will give this idea more thought and see if I either wanna bring that section back or pick a couple fun VN choices for the audience to make.(Though I probably need to take some time remembering them first haha)

I went to Nan Desu Kon (NDK) back in 2013, and attended a visual novel panel there. One segment included playing a segment of Little Busters in which the player can choose whether the main character will hang out with a girl, or his male friends. Choosing the latter requires some insistence, but it's rather humorous.

Other amusing stuff to consider showing:

Hatoful Boyfriend not only includes a lot of comedy, but two eccentric characters: Oko San and Anghel Higure. The current official translation is on DLSite (worksafe English version), and it sounds like a remake will happen. In any case, consider showing a one scene with one of them.

Goro's crazy poses and ramblings in Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side.

Moe's odd actions in Da Capo.

Both Da Capo Moe sempai and Hatoful Boyfirned are used in the panel actually. I haven't play Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side, but I might give it a shot before next ACen.(I didn't necessarily follow the US fan translation progress since I also play VNs with Chinese translation as well)
