So, I managed to bust my ankle last night and now I'm in a "short leg cast" and on crutches. This is my first time 1) with a broken bone, and 2) with crutches. I'm attending the con anyway -- because it's ACen, dangit! ... and I'm in the AA and have friends who will sit on me to keep me still. ;) Maneuvering with crutches is ... an interesting experience. Does anybody have any tips for getting around the convention center or around large numbers of people on crutches? Should I talk to somebody on ACen staff about this?

You should check in with customer service/disability services...they are located on the entry level of the Hyatt in the Grand Hallway between the Grand Ballroom and the bathrooms (it's on the map, including the guidebook map). I'm not sure if they have a location in the con center or of their hours, but they should be able to give you some tips and get you some privileges for the con to make it easier on you

Here's a link to the relevant map: map

Good Luck and have fun!

Hopefully staff will do what they can to assist you. In recent years, I have seen a number of ACen attendees struggling to get through crowds with their walking devices or strollers. If nothing else, plan out where you want to go, and be slow and careful in getting there.

Hi there! Answering Valkyrie's ping :)

Definitely stop in at Special Needs when you get to con, we have a location in the Grand Boardroom at the Hyatt (near Customer Service & main programming) and another one in Registration. We will get you a pass to help you getting around the con.

As far as maneuvering, it's not going to be easy just due to the sheer numbers of people we get. Make liberal use of your voice, say "excuse me!" so people know you're there. If you can get a friend to walk with you to help navigate, it helps. Definitely avoid the habitrail, because that gets very packed and it's tough to maneuver on crutches or in a chair when it's empty. That's about all I can think of, really.

Good luck, and we will see you soon!

Special Needs! Thank you! I knew I'd seen your department here on the forums, but for the life of me I couldn't remember the name. I will definitely check in there when I arrive.

Thanks to everyone else who replied, as well. I think my friends have already decided that I'm going to have an escort wherever I go, so at least I won't have to bull through the crowds on my own.

It's going to be an adventure this year, that's for sure! :)
