Also, one more thing that's just a more plain suggestion... From this past year at Anime Expo, this happened --

"Anime Expo also introduced a Cosplay Participation Area for the first time, offering cosplay photo sets featuring a classroom scene, Sakura grove, a futuristic spaceship interior, and more. Cosplayers eagerly descended on the photo environments, which were part of the larger “Entertainment Hall”

These classroom sets were somewhat small but an awesome idea since it can be really difficult to find good backgrounds at conventions for more in-character photos. I can't really find a lot of the pictures from the other sets, but you get the idea. I don't know who ran it whether it was AX itself (which quoting them above almost makes me think it was) or some sort of panel type thing where someone else brought the sets, but I DEFINITELY want someone to look into this. It'd be so awesome to have a cosplay photo area like how Anime Expo did with different settings =] SOMEONE LOOK INTO THIS.

I had a great time this past ACen, especially having the smoker's area moved away from the side entrance at the Hyatt. Cleared up congestion and my nose! In all honesty my only gripe for the con this year was the entrance into the dealer's room. The only way in was through the two little doors in the main lobby of the convention center, and that resulted in a huge line to get in! You really need to move back into the hall on the other side with the big doors that open up, as well as the secondary entrance/exit by the staircase off the sky bridge. Waiting ten minutes in line to get into the dealer's room multiple times a day was just no bueno. Only complaint this year, everything else was awesome!

Another group had already booked the usual hall. They will be back their next year. I do understand however that they are talking about closing off other entrance by the cafe and only allowing it as an exist. Therefore you will only have one entrance again anyway. Keep in mind that this isn't confirmed but I was told that this was a very big possibility by con staff last year.

First off, this was my 2nd year at ACen & I had a blast!

Most of my gripes have been covered, but as I was watching Cosplay Heroes it reminded me that there was a guest you had in 2012 that was a costumer at Bristol RenFaire that gave a very informative workshop on wig care in 2012. Afterwards, a lot of people wanted to ask her questions (both about wigs & costuming in general.) & she was a great help.

I saw her at a booth in '13 & she wasn't asked to do it this time. I would highly recommend making sure she has a spot next year. A big part of the experience for people like me is learning.

Bristol Renaissance faire is given a number of panel slots and they choose what they host. We don't decide what panels they hold, we just make suggestions on topics to keep them related to the convention's theme. We'll suggest that that panel returns for 2014 :)

I like the idea of a space for cosplayers to take photos as well, sounds fun. Question is...is there enough room or would ACen have to book more space?

I'm wondering if there's a way that the space across from the hotel can be opened up for parking for next year?

C2E2, Wizard World (Chicago Comic Con) sell one day badges in advance. I know Anime Midwest and Anime Expo are selling single day as well.

We sell single day passes once the con starts. There weren't any sold the day before.
Though perhaps the selling of single day passes could work, it might also not work.
At the regular line in the registration area, it was pretty tame. It worked very well and smoothly. This was for weekend passes.
However, there are a lot more people who go to DFW, the reg after hours, and I can say first hand that it was chaotic.
These are just for weekend passes.
Now imagine selling one day passes at DFW. the clutter would increase tremendously.

Here is how it could work. At regular reg hours, in the actual hall, we could sell both weekend AND day passes.
But not for after hours.

AND YEAH... BIGGEST THING... THE COMP BADGE LINE. Something needs to be done. SERIOUSLY. I stood in line for 3 hours and got in line early Thursday to pick up my comp badges. Two hours literally and we had no updates on what was taking Reg. Barely a few inches moved in line during the course of two hours. I missed out on the forum meet n greet because I had already stood in line long enough that I wasn't going to leave it. That's really sad because I got in line 3 hours prior to the meet n greet and the meet n greet was literally happening a few feet from the line. Sad part was... I was towards the front of the line the whole time. Not only that but my staff badge ended up getting misplaced and I almost had to go stand in another huge line to go and retrieve that... Next year I'll have my comps stand in line probably for their own badges. But seriously... something always seems to happen with Reg and their computers. I truly feel sorry for the staffers who end up having to deal with these issues. But yeah... somehow get lines moving faster for registration or get a bigger space and more people handling comps, etc? I noticed people who get an at con badge/pick up have gotten their badges eons faster than comps. Not sure how long the reg line was for buying your badge at the con but that could probably use some improvements too. I wish staff and comp badges could just have the option of being mailed to you or something T____T

Alright, I'm done with my ranting for now x3
[/font]

oh noes double posting. but it seems I should bring this to light.

I can agree to this. I can say this because I was one of the staff working there, you might have seen me running around in a hoodie trying to herd the lines.

LET'S NOT HAVE DFW/COMPS/LATE NIGHT REG IN A SMALL PACKED ROOM PLEASE.
I am not claustrophobic at all but woking there did in fact make me feel like the walls were closing in.
And the machines...yeah let's not delay so much like this year, have a backup plan or get the tech in earlier in case a conflict DOES arise, we can be prepared for it.

Dark Spellmaster - It is unfortunately up to the property owner if they open up their parking lots. If you're talking about across the busy road? That's a business complex and probably would never happen. Across the other street is the convention center parking which as far as I'm aware does open at some point.

Well, truth be told I'm not sure what I could suggest. 2013 was a large improvement over 2012, for me anyway. The only thing I honestly COULD suggest is getting rid of the lines to the merchant area or figuring out a way to get people in there quicker.

Having to wait 2+ hours to go check stuff out is kinda bleh. . And having to rush everything on the last day is extremely stressful, when there is so much ground to cover.

While I am not from a far away place (I live in Chicago), a list of restaurants being included would most certainly be helpful to A LOT of people. . Especially folks who tend to stay overnight or try to power through all 3 days of ACen.

The other suggestion I'd say is that while the merchant area was well done this year, part of it was done very poorly. Artist Alley was -extremely- cramped compared to the rest of it. I know it probably cannot be helped, but something should really be done to widen the walkways a little bit. It's almost as if they were designed without realizing that people would stop and look at the booths. . Haha. :P

Oh! While typing this up I thought of one other thing: An easier to read map. . Perhaps with landmarks or something for people to get a general sense of what is where. It's very easy to go in the complete opposite direction of where you wanted to go. . And so you end up being late for panels.

Sorry for the unorganized post. :P

You may want to look into a newfangled device called a compass...

Or just keep track of where North is. (Hint: River Road runs N/S.)

Thanks. I was suggesting that a landmarks be pointed out so that people could determine direction if they're not near a window to use said road as a reference. A very easy remedy that may also help is a simple N/S/E/W marker in one of the corners on the map page.

Oh wow, can't believe I missed that. Thanks for pointing it out. Then my suggestion for that is. . To keep it in the next guidebook? Since a few friends who have gone to ACen much longer than I have suggested that things sometimes get moved or removed in the guidebook.

the evangelion photo shoot being on saturday is amazing. lets keep it that way. =) if it was on firday, i wouldn't be able to make it unless it was like towards then end of friday. saturday is the best day to have the photo shoot =)also add cosplay chess, its something that i think would be amazing with the masqurade, it may make the rave shorter, but it allows more people to get involved on something anime related, and get some good laughs going as well =)
I like to be called by the name Fer. as in Feraligatr

I enjoyed this year, but I have a suggestion that makes a lot of sense. Why not move the soap bubble to friday and hardcore synergy to saturday? It would give the great japanese DJs a much larger crowd, and it would allow people who like synergy and don't go to the bubble to go to Anime Hell/Midnight Madness. Please consider trying this next year.

Yes, this 100%. As much as I love the Soap Bubble, it really isn't related to anime or Japanese culture. I mean yes, the Soap Bubble has had guests like Kors K (who has lots of his music featured in Konami Music games such as Dance Dance Revolution and Beatmania IIDX) but I think having HS on Sat and the SB on Friday would really signal the importance of Japanese based EDM (Electronic Dance Music) at anime conventions.

However, I disagree on making either of the dances 17+, 18+, or 21+. It's not the responsibility of the dance coordinators (and staff) to police up the attendees should there be anything "adult" going on among the crowd. That's the responsibilities of IRT and security officials. Doing so, in my opinion, would only decrease attendance on both nights and cause a stir among the younger generation of con goers to not attend the dances in the future. Plus, it would just take way too long to police up and card those who are under the age limit given the size of both dances.

I strongly believe in more IRT and more Rosemont police being on site to help alleviate illegal activities going on in both dances and letting attendees know where they can find an IRT rep/police officer should they need assistance or to report unruly behavior.

I have a really weird suggestion but can we maybe update the ACen web-page layout? It's been the same for going on what, three years? I really miss the cute banners of our mascots.

I have a few suggestions:

The website is updated real time like the twitter/facebook page. Many people had no idea about the exact date or were confused on the dates with the hotel release blocks. Not everyone has Facebook or Twitter (or have no desire to get such applications.)

The anime central facebook page is regarded in general. Several questions were asked and ignored for some reason. It would be different if the timeline was super busy but its not (currently.) Some questions were answered by watchers and not the mod/staff in general on the timeline.

The latest hotel block release was updated with hotel information on the website and social media. We en devour to update both at close to the same time. Most of the questions are answered on the facebook if they can be answered by the staff, if someone jumps on with the correct answer then its already done. You can sign up for sms updates to your phone if you dont like Facebook or Twitter, but they will continue being the announcement tool we use in conjunction with the website to hold the information.

LOVE all these suggestions. So creative and interesting.

My ONE suggestion, and I will beg for it every year is...

PLEASE color code stickers or badges for age restrictions.
Soap Bubble must be 18+. Hands down. It runs into the early hours, has questionable activity, and it is impossible to get the younger attendees out at a reasonable hour to maintain general safety.

I have not attended ACen in awhile because it seems like a cluster of chaos. I miss it. PLEASE color code badges to keep young ones safe.

If this already happened by some miraculous way and I missed that memo, THANK YOU.
If not, seriously. Please. It is NOT safe to have it any other way.
poopies.

Yes, because it'd be so hard for a minor to get a non-minor badge...

^ pretty much. I doubt color coded stickers will ever happen not that it isn't a worthy suggestion.

True.

It however does not lessen the quality of this suggestion....

I disagree 100%. I'm not going to deny that "questionable activity" happens at the Soap Bubble but I truly think it should be staff's mission to prevent or reduce "questionable activity" to be non-existent or as minimum as possible.

"Questionable activity" comes with the territory of running such a large event. You can't approach the Soap Bubble/Hardcore Synergy with the mindset of abstinence or complete elimination. It's just not realistic. You can't stop all the bad things going on, although that is the ultimate goal, it's just impossible to police up all those people.

The best and realistic approach to solve any "questionable activity" for such events is one I proposed above: increased security, police presence to deter would be rule breakers, drug sniffing dogs, have safe spots (like at universities) for example where there's a visible blue light where security/police are standing in case anyone needs help/assistance. These are just some suggestions that work at other conventions where I run the dances.

If the Soap Bubble was 18+, you would see attendance decrease for 2015 and so on.

Imo, the suggestion to make Soap Bubble 18+ is kinda like saying "Let's stop underage pregnancies by making abortions illegal. If abortions are illegal, underage people will think twice about getting pregnant."

Like that's some flawed and skewed logic right there.

If the SB is 18+ then in all fairness, Hardcore Synergy should be 18+ as well.

I don't have kids or anything, and I do understand the concern for safety. I'm trying hard to look at this approach from the shoes of a parent. But I please ask that you look at it from the POV of the congoer who strongly enjoys the Soap Bubble and has been attending it for 10+ years now. The Soap Bubble is what makes ACen imo and I know a huge majority of my friends go only for HS/SB. If the quality of the Soap Bubble were to diminish, or if the Soap Bubble were to be removed completely, I don't know how long a huge chunk of those people would still attend.

Well, I've been attending the Soap Bubble for 10+ years and have been a part of the behind the scenes activity for 6 years or so now. I don't ever want to see the quality of the event go down one bit and suggestions like making it 18+ is something I, as both a con attendee and a dance coordinator (not just anime cons but warehouse/club events), just completely disagree with and will argue against.

I do see the concern for safety and I feel that simple things as I mentioned in this post are a compromise for both sides of the isle.

A comment someone made on my Facebook after I posted about this thread:

"Honestly, the strongest way to smack down that arguement is seriously that kids under 18 are going to do questionable things no matter what at late hours during ACen weekend. Giving them an event to go to at least keeps it contained and to a minimum. Much better that they go to a dance event like this than some random room party and get plastered."

I have a few constructive remarks that I would like to state. --- I want to say though to anyone reading this, that I am not trying to start an argument or demean anyone in any way. This is simply ment to be a civil conversation about two opposing views.

While your concerns are well spoken and thought out - there's just a few problems with them. ACen has made it clear in the past that they are unwilling to hire additional security- in either the form of private or off duty police officers. The cost would be way too high and would eat up a bunch of the budget. I'd hate to know what drug sniffing dogs would cost. I do like the idea of a "Safe" area for people in the raves that is lite up in the room that someone could find IRT though. Perhaps something like this wouldnt be hard to implement??

I'm not worried about decreased attendance.- Honestly I think it might decrease for a year and only slightly- then you would find those people who have been run out by the unruliness that is Soap Bubble attending again. I know many people, including myself, do not go to the raves simply because they are not 18+. The problem is my friends and I dont know who's there and who we are dancing with. You could easily offend a parent of a child and get into big trouble. I'm still for the option of moving Soap to Friday and keeping it all ages. Synergy should be made a smaller 18+ rave on Saturday night and not in the main ballroom area. That way people who come just for Soap would be able to go, and those who want a more anime focused Saturday 'Main' night will get that feeling back.

Many people believe ACen is turning into an entertainment convention instead of an Anime one- and the focus on the raves is a huge part of that. I understand that Synergy is supposed to have a different feeling and type of music than Soap, and you could keep it that way, but having a place that you dont have to worry about 'jail bate' would be awesome as well.
