If you could create a new Main Event that would be at Anime Central 2014 what would it be? We want to know what events would get you excited! So post below with your awesome ideas and we'll consider them for 2014.

Conditions and info

Rooms can be different roomsets, including Theater (front facing chairs), Empty, Classroom (long tables with front facing chairs), or banquet (round tables with chairs). If it requires a unique room setup please do your best to describe it.

No food, unfortunately we need to follow our contract with our hotel. We are aware that a maid cafe is wanted, and we are considering it.

No tickets, or additional fee. This shouldn't be a majorly expensive event that would require us to charge for it. We don't like having many events that cost extra to attend.

This would take place in either the Grand Ballroom (2500 seats), Rosemont Ballroom (1500 seats), or Con Center A Ballroom (1500 seats). So it needs to be something that would be a draw and make people want to attend it. (if you have ideas for smaller events we'd love to hear those too!)

I've seen ideas pop up around the forum for different new Main Events, so lets get the brain storming all in one place :)

I haven't given it to much thought, but we should probably have some sort of main event that involves the "guests" v.s. some luckily selected con goers. It could have a family fued/game show vibe. I'm still thinking of something more concrete, but this is to get things started :)/>

That idea Cactusmomma had in a thread yesterday .. (?) was awesome. I could see a spring matsuri without food being really fun. Plus so many series have yukata variations of cosplay it would be kinda cool to see. Hell, I'm sure a taiko band ( do they call a group of taiko drummers a band?) wouldn't be hard or expensive to get.

Bring back ACen idol or even a dance competition.
Of course songs would need to be in Japanese/related to anime.

I also like that matsuri type event cactusmomma suggested.

I have no idea if this would even be possible, but I'd love to see ACen put on some sort of traditional Japanese theatre performance, like a Noh, Kabuki, or even Takurazuka play. I don't know if there'd be anyone within the area that could be brought in to do something like that or if this is more a crazy suggestion for the guest department, but I think it'd be really cool. Heck, it doesn't even have to be super authentic. Something like an original play written to be performed in one of those styles but in English, or a show translated into English, or something would be fine if actors that speak Japanese aren't attainable.

Actually, honestly I'd generally like to see more main events that are shows of varying types, rather than just the typical masquerade and dances. A taiko drumming performance or something else like that would also be super cool, if theatre is too hard to pull off.

Matsuri!~ Like CactusMomma suggested in another thread, I would totally love to have a matsuri in the main ballroom for a few hours. There could be game booths with authentic games (like the goldfish catching game). I know we couldn't have takoyaki stands or anything like that because of food issues, but games, and even a look-alike "prayer" station that had good luck fortunes printed up to choose from, and maybe Japanese charms that could be for sale. Also, an opportunity for people to wear kimono and yukata. Have maybe some sort of agreement between ACen and an online or local retailer that sells kimono or yukata (kind of like what is done with the hotel) so that people can purchase one beforehand to wear. Obviously there doesn't need to be a dress code, as some people may have their own already or can create a modified version of their favorite characters into a kimono/short yukata.

Nthing the matsuri idea Cactusmomma had. It sounds like it could be a really fun event, and it would be a great way to change things up a little and inject some Japanese culture. Getting something else cultural, like taiko drumming or a theater performance, would also be awesome.

I know there's a couple retailers between Chinatown and around.. there's also a company that caters to the convention circuit that's come to local conventions in the past. Not sure if the owner still does or not, but she's amazingly helpful: http://ohiokimono.com/

A little Matsuri type deal sounds fun!
My only thing is that there is a point when this can become very kind of patronizing and rude to the actual culture and religion. There is a real fine line.
Also if you guys are looking for taiko performing, call up the Okinawa Kenjinkai. They give absolutely amazing performances at Mitsuwa that I have personally been to multiple times. Plus they can teach you the dance to one of the songs and how to use the drums.

Otakon has had a street festival in recent years. It's taken place on the Thursday before the con, about a block from the BCC and its main hotel. It includes food from nearby restaurants, live dance performances, and concerts. No additional ticket is required.

For a slightly different idea, consider having a mock school festival. It could reasonably take place indoors, and could be either relatively low-key or centered around live performances. Reading the TVTropes page on this topic might be a good way to think about what could be done.

I know of one that is very very very popular at other conventions which it is something that would make a great addition to anime centrals lineup. Cosplay chess. This could be done next year. Anime Boston is very well known for having the best cosplay chess matches in the convention world. I think its time we get that award for anime central.

I would definitely be interested in a matsuri-type event!

O geez, I need to do some research into this one (I need to find the con book) but there was a VA guest at Anime World: Indianapolis that put on a kabuki workshop. He gave a little bit of history, then we got to dress up and he taught us how a kabuki actor would walk, use a fan, etc to portray roles. We then put on a short play on the main stage.

Edit: Kent Williams from Funimation put on the workshop.

Quote

Actor Kent Williams offers an interactive experience of this traditional Japanese theater art form, providing a hands-on exploration of the kabuki theatre style. Workshop participants learn the basic movement techniques of the samurai (male) and onnagata (female), wear kimono costumes, and learn the use of hand fans. Time permitting, Kent will apply kumadori, the kabuki makeup, on willing actors. The Japanese kabuki workshop culminates in a short staging of a traditional folktale scene using newly-learned skills. Lots of fun; no experience necessary; all ages welcome to participate!

There's a Maid Cafe in Milwaukee, just a drive up the road!

I think the matsuri sounds amazing, although it's too bad there will be no takoyaki! Yum~ Other than that, I like the idea that was mentioned up there that said we should involve the guests more. That would be fun! I'm sure they'd love it.

I recently went to Ramencon and they had a swap/sell meet hosted by a panelist. Basically, everyone could come into the room who had anime related memorabilia (wall scrolls, dvd's, posters, figures, manga, etc.) and let them set up a table to try and sell or even trade their wares. Some were set up with the ability to accept paypal (and some people just used their paypal apps on their phones) to buy items. Some traded with others. It was a really good time and I got a lot of amazing things there for really good prices. I don't know how much of a logistics nightmare it could be to try and do something like this at ACen, but I would love to have something like this there. People could even have to sign up in advance to make sure there was enough space for tables and stuff, but I'm sure there would be a lot of interest in this. I know there is already a buy/sell/trade thread that exists here on the forums, but if there could be an event possibly Sunday for this, it would be cool. I didn't know what to expect, but I had a lot of fun going and setting up stuff, and had just as much fun seeing what everyone else had, too. Just a thought.

I think Japanese Noh theater would be a super cool event. Very historical, and I think would draw in a lot of people.
What about maybe having a martial arts show or something? Have some big name/high ranked karate fighters come in and we could watch a spar? That might be cool. I think either of those could be neat.

^ Martial arts would be cool, too! (Karate, kendo, aikido - heck, in an area that size there might even be sumo!) There have got to be, like, a million dojos in the Chicago area; surely at least one of them would agree to come in and do a demo.

I forgot about Sumo! Oh my gosh! that would be super neat. Talk about immersion in Japanese culture! We could even have like a Q&A with them before the match too--like about the training, what one has to do to become a sumo wrestler...that would be very cool and VERY interesting!!!! :)

I'm not sure if this would be a main event or if it'd be classified as a video game tournament, but something I heard about another con doing was a Pokemon league. The con had people designated as gym leaders and people would go around and battle those gym leaders for badges and try to get through all 7 for a prize. That sounds super cool and I'd love to see that. I may even be willing to offer myself up as a gym leader if this was a thing.

Whoa! Which convention was that? That is super cool! I would love to see a video feed of that our something! If it was really focused on, and people got super into it (which I'm sure they would) that would be a REALLY AWESOME main event. Hey, I'd be there with you being a gym leader, I think that would be more fun than the fighting! Acting all cool as a gym leader, and then "being that wise guy admitting defeat at the end" hahah oh the nostalgia! think of the crowd that would bring in! :D

not sure if it's the same con that feuerwerke is talking about but I know Karoshi at NIU had pokemon gym battles. On their program guide one would fill in what pokemon they wanted (within limits) and battle with them. Not sure how the battling thing worked as I've never stayed at that con for more than three hours but it seems like kind of a cool idea.

I didn't quite create this idea, but a Vocaloid concert would be awesome! If nothing but the Rosemont Theater can house the audience, then do it there!! I've never attended such and it'd be an awesome main event!

I've only ever seen this as a panel, and it only allowed trading (no buying or selling) to stay within the hotel rules. But attendance was always high, so making it a main event would be great!

I've heard other conventions do similar things. It was classified as a videogame tournament, but it drew lots of people and everyone had fun.

I didn't quite create this idea, but a Vocaloid concert would be awesome! If nothing but the Rosemont Theater can house the audience, then do it there!! I've never attended such and it'd be an awesome main event!

I know the opening post said to try to avoid ticketed events, but I'm sure lots of people would be willing to pay for tickets to something like this. It'd be worth looking into.

Kalafina came last year to perform, and that was a ticketed event. So I don't see why there can't be a Vocaloid concert. (I for one would be overjoyed if it were to happen)

It certainly is possible, as AX has pulled it off in the past. Granted, their concert was corporately sponsored (there are a lot of rights holders and licenses involved as well as a ton of tech required), as Toyota was pushing the Miku-endorsed Corolla at the time.

I really would like to avoid paid-ticketed events whenever possible. An event like this would have to be an additional fee to the attendees.

I LOVED the Kalafina concert last year! Honestly I thought it was worth every dime to have the concert in a real theater with good acoustics, and it was my favorite ACen event in my whole 10 years of going. My friend stressed out and waited in line for 2 hours this year to get tickets to the final fantasy concert, and I wanted to go and would have paid the $15 or so to go in a theater, but was not willing to wait in line outside in the rain at 6 am to get into a concert in that ballroom with its TERRIBLE sound quality. I'm not going to waste my time at a concert when I can get better sound at home in my living room.

The biggest problem I saw with the Kalafina concert was that it wasn't promoted enough. The hall wasn't full and should have been. Something like this needs advertising. Perhaps allow attendees to preorder tickets first and then open it up to non attendees for a higher price if needed to fill the performance up, maybe holding some aside for at-con sales to attendees.

As far as special events go, of all the events listed here, the mock school festival sounds like by far the most fun! It would be GREAT to have a haunted house, and maybe dating game, and some mock club events, like photography and kendo, even if we couldn't do the food based booths. I'm sure panelist/attendees would be willing to volunteer to run the booths. It would be possible to mix in some Japanese Summer Festival games as well, for more variety, such as a goldfish scoop, beanbag toss. I'm not sure how easy this event would be, but it would really be fun!
