(but please don't show up in this cosplay...thank you very much)

What comes to your mind when hearing the term Visual Novel?
...

Urr...maybe not that.
Visual Novel is a rather unique game genre that in recent years started to be known by more and more people in US, thanks to the success of Katawa Shoujo. But back to where it is originated from, visual novel has always been an essential part of anime world. Just check out how many anime or manga are based on or about visual novels now a days.
However, what's so fun about this genre which involves only text reading and making decision that might kill you the next instant and...
Posted Image
(no one can say it better than one who can die 50 different ways in a game, just saying)
Some also believe it is nothing but Japanese porno, thanks to its other name Eroge and...

(Judgmental word aside, the year is actually wrong)
Clearly, misunderstanding and misconception about this genre exist, and obviously there is more to explain its popularity, which I would like to clarify and discuss with you. Hopefully through this panel, we would be able to figure out why there is such a passion and love.
Of course, the fun doesn't just come from the consumer side, producers surely have their own fun too.
As the member for the visual novel game group Amber Clover, I would also like to share my personal experience of making them. You hope to create your own Katawa Shoujo? Well, you might be surprised to know it isn't THAT difficult. (surely not as hard as making your own Diablo 3 or Call of Duty) With proper mindset and preparation, you might even be able to create your own big hit and create your own game company like Type Moon.

(well, maybe I sound too optimistic here)
So here you are, a panel about VN.(Surprisingly, I found this type of panels rather rare even in other cons, but I still tried my best to learn from a similar one made by Fakku) And as you might be able to tell, FUN and Interaction would be the essence for this panel. I would love to share my own opinion and experience, but this panel is FOR YOU, whether you are a pro or newbie about VN. I would love to discuss with you any aspect of visual novels and any question or opinion you might have regarding it. Look forward to meet you all during ACen...O~NII~CHAN~~~~

I'll be attending! I love playing VNs when I can find good translations as my Japanese skills are pitiful. Also tried my hand at making a couple, but I quickly grew bored of it. I prefer playing. XD

I wandered into visual novel fandom about a decade ago, back when there were maybe a dozen VNs in English, and at least three of four were pornographic. Fandom seemed like a matter of waiting for the next professional translation. I expected it would always be that way... but then I found the English speaking freeware/indie scene, as well as the fan translation community. So yeah, there's more out there to find besides harem and romance stories. You just have to be willing to look for them, and you have to be okay with zero budget production values and short stories.

I have personally talked with a few other VN fans, including Hinano and her husband JPMeyer, who liked Sakura Wars before the fifth game was translated. Thanks to some Shira Oka and Hirameki (RIP) discussion panels, I've briefly met other fans. Hopefully this panel will be mentioned on the ACen schedules, and I'll be able to get to the right place on time.

SargentJY, is this Tumblr page called Amber Clover your group? I'm asking because it contains the statement "A doujin game group hoping to promote the grand fun of visual novel..." but most of what I see on the Tumblr is fanart of other series. If you're committed to creating a game or an interactive story, then make sure to write about it. Stay active on Lemma Soft, the /visualnovels/ sub-Reddit, and other similar places.

Thanks for the comment. We are presently more active on DeviantArt, and recently on Ren'py website. Most of us are from Eastern Asia so we actually aren't that familiar with the VN circle. If you want to know what we have done, u can check our page at http://amberclover.deviantart.com/. I also do my own VN commentary on: https://www.facebook.com/SergeantJY

We will definitely try out those group you just mentioned too.

I have a bit of a small interest in visual novels ever since Katawa Shoujo dropped last year. Actually, a little bit before KS came out, I was playing Radical Dreamers (A VN based off of Chrono Trigger/Cross) and Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. Just got Umineko no Naku Koro Ni and Rose Gun Days recently. Looking for some new visual novels to play as well so hopefully this panel can help me out.
ACen 2014 Cosplay List (Tentative)
Kinzo Ushiromiya (Umineko no Naku Koro Ni) (Canceled)
Goat-Kun (Umineko no Naku Koro Ni)
Uncle Ruckus (The Boondocks)
Garterbelt (Panty and Stocking
Coach (Left 4 Dead 2)

Any commentary or opinion sharing is welcomed as long as you wouldn't get me kicked out by the ACen staff(jk)

There are definitely more u should try and experience. I will try my best to cover or mention as many good works(in my personal opinion of course) as possible.

Awesome, too bad I won't be cosplaying at ACen. Maybe I'll come up with VN-related t-shirt or something. XD

On topic of shirts, I may need to make another Command Spell shirt or something before the con. I made one with Kariya Matou's on it, but I want to make more because they're fun. And I want to actually do one in red. The Kariya one is in glow in the dark paint that shows up silver in the light.
