It's been more than 50 years since the moon landings, and mankind hasn't done anything similar since.
I think it has a lot to do with cost and a lack of nationalism--let's face it, we probably wouldn't have strove so hard to get to the Moon if it hadn't been for wanting to beat the Dirty Rotten Commies (aka the Russians) to it. Right now everyone's economy is in the tank, too; you want to fund a new Moon mission, but if it's a choice between welfare and the Moon...
But yeah, think of all the practical things you can do with a Death Star. Worried about asteroid collisions? Not any more.
