So nintendo has now started a new ad campaign. It's new slogan is "I'm not a gamer".

I give nintendo props for taking a gimmick and making millions of it and also blowing up the "casual gaming" crowd. So I can't really blame them for trying to expand on that.
However, this is pretty much nintendo blowing off their hardcore crowd. Also this is the nail in the coffin for me not to purchase a system from them. At lest for the next generation anway. Thoughts?

I get the reasoning behind it, but I doubt its effectiveness.

I can't decide if the first ad is trying to sell me on an immersive experience or what. I don't think the 'I'm not a gamer' slogan really works there, because she's talking about point totals and playing Mario. It's a game! It's a very well-known game! I would expect that I could play it on a gaming device, because it's a game! I considered that it might be trying to say that there are plenty of fun games to play even if you don't consider yourself a 'gamer,' but just about everyone has at least some basic familiarity with Mario, and I don't think that any of them have ever looked at a Mario game and said, "Nope, too hardcore for me." The ad may also be trying to tell me that the 3DS is so awesome I no longer notice that I am not, in fact, Mario, and that I'm just playing a game, but since I can't decide if it is or not...

The slogan makes more sense in the second ad, which looks to me like it's meant to show the 3DS as a multipurpose device instead of a device solely for playing games (You can draw crudely-rendered pie with it! WTF?), but I question how well that's going to work when the iPad already does something similar, with a bigger screen, more features and greater ease-of-use for those who aren't technologically inclined - and for that group of people, an iPad is a concept they're much more familiar with. I know that this isn't a new idea (that one DS recipe thing that helped you cook comes to mind) but every single person I know who owns a Nintendo handheld owns it for the purpose of playing games, and not for lifestyle type stuff. I think that if the average person wants handheld art lessons, their first instinct is going to be to download an iPad app, and I don't think this ad is going to change their minds.

Judging from the comments on the article you linked, the wording also seems to be repelling a lot of people who do consider themselves gamers. I know that Nintendo's had great success building up a casual gaming crowd with the Wii, but in an era of smartphones and tablets I question their ability to do that with a handheld device, and if they're not able to do that, it's probably not the best idea to alienate the 'gamer' crowd.

I had to rewatch the ads to understand them because they are confusing as all hell. You're playing Mario and taking about scores but you are not a gamer....huh?

Someone is going to get the pink slip.

This won't stop people from buying the system, the hardcore loyal Mario/Nintendo fans who buy ever Nintendo system. Why else do you think they say the ds lite "PRINTS MONEY?"

Lol Everyone knows im not a person to defend Nintendo, but people aren't really understanding what this is if they are accusing Nintendo for hating gamers. To put it simply, the ad is saying you are transcending gaming. You are that object you are playing.

Not really a bad ad, but if people misunderstand, it becomes bad. People really are too quick to jump down Nintendo's throat at times. Lol

Point wasn't missed, myself at least. I think the point is that Nintendo is trying to put this thing in everyone's hands, not just the little kids. I don't think these ads do much for them other than stir up gamer talk. Adults aren't typically totting around their 3DS' or Vitas, especially at a restaurant to draw a picture of a piece of pie.

For instance, just sitting on a train...sitting at a restaurant. I look around and what do I typically see? I see the random kid here or there playing with a handheld Nintendo device (never a Sony handheld). Other kids (usually teens) and adults..they are on their phones and the occasional tablet.

Game companies who also like dabble in hardware are at a crossroads for their future survival. Again I say, I welcome our social gaming overlords (though it doesn't mean I have to like it).

Oh I wasn't jumping down their throats; I just didn't understand the whole message. Like are they trying to say everyone is a gamer and we don't have labels or people won't prejudge others with a 3DS? Either way it's a bad move; it doesn't make me want to buy a 3DS fast but it doesn't make me want to say no to Nintendo anymore like DS.

People are going to label regardless because it's human nature; someone might think, "well that person is trying to be a hipster and a front with that iphone 3 and those 300 dollars headphones but have lame raggy shoes."

Systems are suffering because people are getting lazy and want to stretch their money. People rather spend 500 dollars on a phone, because they can use that outside of gaming and it's a staple in life, rather than 300+ dollars on a game system that can only watch tv, play video games, go on the internet, has been viewed as a "product for children," and isn't there for convenience sake.

But why the heck would any one use a tablet outside of being "cool" in public? You can only download books on it, which you can do with your phone, and you can't really play music with and pocket it because it's big as heck.

I use a tablet more than my phone in public for these following reasons:

• Saving my phone's battery. My iPad, given my usage amounts, will last for weeks. My phone, not so much.
  
• Webpage perusing on a much larger screen. I'm not all that thrilled with having to stare down at my phone's screen when trying to visit any number of sites I may have an interest in. I prefer the larger viewing space afforded to me by my tablet. The same can be said for various applications I also use.
  
• My tablet has 64gb of storage, which is great for storing movies. My phone, 16gb.
  
• Much like visiting webpages, watching movies on the screen of a tablet is quite more enjoyable than having to watch it on my phone..especially if I am watching a movie while on a stationary machine at the gym.
  
• It is much more convenient than lugging my laptop around.

Tablets aren't that big, especially given they are typically in 10 and 7 inch variations. I don't walk everywhere with my tablet because it is too big for that unless I have my backpack with me, which because of work, can be rather often. If I am in a pinch, I'll use my phone..but I prefer not to. I'll carry my tablet with me if I anticipate me needing it for any reason where it will come in handy.

All this and I have yet to buy a book for it. Tablets are much more than just tools for books and music (movies, games, productivity). If I really wanted to, I could use it specifically for work too..but I choose not to.

To me, my tablet is a means of convenience I enjoy having. I give a crap about looking 'cool'.

Maybe I'm old fashion but I use my phone in order to call people and I use 411 to find places and that's really it. If I want music or the internet that's what I use my old laptop for or my mp3 player. I couldn't image why people would sell a kidney for these things until you explained it; thanks a lot.

EDIT: This wouldn't be for me due to my motion sickness on trains/etc. but it is tempting to buy one when I work 5am shifts.

I can image someone looking at porn with this on the train.

On second thought, I'm not going to make a long response, but I still assert the fact that people are jumping to conclusions a lil too quickly.

"I'm not a gamer" is not a challenge to those who are gamers. It's also not say the said person who said the line is saying they are not a gamer. What is it doing is saying they are actually the character the are playing, or they are the action they are doing.

As I said, I'm not a defender of Nintendo, but I don't give them blame for where it isn't due. The internet loves to beat up on Nintendo no matter what nowadays. (Some of the things are questionable at times, and I'm not a huge fan anymore, but still...) Nintendo took the route of expecting people would know what they implied more than dumbing it down by saying something like "I'm not just a gamer, I'm a coin collecting machine (or whatever she said lol) That would be the closest interpretation I can give (but it actually takes away the meaning. Because the person is "no longer a gamer", they are doing what they are playing at the moment as it is real life.

This is leaning on catching the casuals obviously, but this isn't the usual eschewing the hardcore like so many people think around the net. Face it. Casual gamers are now a part of our gaming community and we can't help it. They are not trying to insult anyone, just trying to catch people who still don't game and hook em with the fact that the game is so fun, that they'll forget they are holding a chunk of plastic, and think they are actually stomping on goombas and koopas. lol

No they aren't purposaly hurting us. But if the "casual" gaming consumer has more expendable money then a hardcore gamer then the market will gravitate to whatever they want, whether it's a good idea or not. And lets face it. I see where they're going with it, but they're doing a really poor job of it. All this is doing is getting a lot of the more avid gamers into a fit while trying to look good to the non-gaming crowd. And like already previously said, people buying a DS at this point, or any gaming handheld, for 'casual gaming' is just going to look elsewhere to devices that'll be able to do more than that. Which is basically everything anymore. Hell, even E-readers have fancier 'tablet' models, and some of them are pretty cheap.

Like people have said: tablets and phones already cater to the general population. There's nothing insanely wrong with Nintendo's crazy ad campaign, but why buy some Nintendo system to draw a picture of your pie? If you have the money to buy a Nintendo system, then you probably have a phone. There's probably free apps out there that allow you to do the same thing and more.

well, people are missing the point of this campaign like champs. This is what they mean by "not a gamer": you're not MERELY a gamer, you're something beyond that. It's saying that their titles are so engrossing that you're drawn that much into their worlds. Like with gold medalist Gabrielle Douglas saying she's a coin-collecting champion. i agree with xeno and aiddon, people are makinga huge deal over nothing. i read neogaf and penny arcade, i never seen a bit of news about the "outrage" at all and beleaive me if this "outrage" was real neogaf would be unloadable.

but funny how no one is talking about sony sueing keven buttler over being in a firestone add that had a wii it in, or all of the dumb sony adds or HR stunts over the last 10 years, like crying devil baby, live goat sacafice, the PSP adds hyping it more as a movie player, i can go on. that is what i see worse then this failed outrage to launch the "Casral" bougyman.

but still nothing will top the entire HR campain of dante inferrio where at con's EA was rewarding people for taking upskirt shots of the booth girls.

Oh man, Sony's ads have been terrible this generation with the exception of the Butler ads. And their suing Jerry Lambert REALLY shows that they're probably the stupidest of console maker bar NONE.

I wasn't aware of this; I just know about the girl who was told to put on more clothes http://www.gamerlive...lothes-pax-east and pretty much the nintendo ad. To be honest if DS didn't point it out I wouldn't had noticed that either.

Well the PSP is a damn good movie player if you bootleg the heck out of it, same with DS lite. A lot better resolution than a phone imo and it's smaller than a kindle or a tablet.

when i said the PSP play movies, i am talking about the failed UMD movies disk. it was a good idea that is just a few years eurly since now, every system and handheld have netflix.

psp may have been better in movies if it had netflix or a digatal store. UMD was doomed from the start.

Well since PSP is obsolete (sort of,) Sony is more gung ho towards the expensive Vita. I think the psp's downfall was a lot of things, from bad marketing to the PSP go.

Another problem is that Nintendo is pushing the 3DS AND bringing out another handheld like system, so having the formention ad isn't helping their case. They are better off appealing to the market that has the money as well as the hardcore gamers. A lot of parents won't buy a 3DS for themselves unless they are into that stuff and won't "go outside being a gamer and understand the concept of a system." That would work in Japan maybe, but not in the USA.

I just think Nintendo can do better than that, heck all of them can really..but will it matter in the end? I feel absolutely nothing from those ads but maybe that is because I already 'game'. The butler ads have been the better gaming related ads recently but that has come and gone for Sony as well. What can they do? At this point, only the next generation system can help..but then again, even that may not be the shot in the arm the industry is looking for.

Any rage coming about from the ad is overblown.
