So I've heard that all the speed dating panels have failed throughout the years.Does anyone know why?Why are other conventions better? What would you suggest to make them better?

Dont know about other cons, but the reason they have failed at ACen is the Male to Female ratio and the fact that a lot of underaged people show up which just makes things even more awkward

As much as I hate when girls say all the good guys are taken, this just isn't fair to say. You are insulting all the nice single girls out there.

i dunno if it's ever worked at ANY con--although their maid cafes tend to go at least 500x better
than the ACen attempts--but i stopped by the dating panel one year with friends and
possibly my gf at the time(i forget which year it was). so yeah it was mostly just
leering dudes and a lone girl.

things like that scare off most people who would be interested (my friend, A GUY, got creeped
out and wanted to leave immediately). you really need to have someone organize it who's thrown
a party before; they need to bring as many single girls as they can convince, and try to talk
at least a handful of date-worthy guys into going, or it'll never work. i definitely remember
seeing attractive single girls, interested, peep in and see a bunch of sketchy guys and no other girls, get
creeped out and leave--that, or they just felt awkward being one of only TWO girls and left.

On topic for op's question, the reason why it failed was due to lack of interest, people not showing up, the people who did show up having high guy:girl ratios, and convention mentality. A lot of guys, and girls, go to cons to party, have fun, and have sex, not really hook up in a long term relationship, or they already have one so why waste it on a fling?

I remember going to one of these at ACen a few years back (2007 or 2008).
Huge line. They had to cut it off when the first 30 (or so) of each gender were let into the room THEN had to segregate it by under/over 18.
That's when organization got messy. Had to balance everything out by letting more people in/out. Already about a half-hour or more spent.
Each one-on-one session was five minutes which made the whole panel too long. Then they decided on 2 mins instead of 5. Then the panel's time was up. Not everybody got to meet everybody.
All-in-all it was fun but very disorganized. Looking at the line outside, sure the Girl/Guy ratio was disproportionate but not a problem since there was a room/panel cap anyway.
I'm not sure how the speeding dating panels in the next few years fared.

Hey you can't too mad at him. You made a semi similar post about the compatible guys. While he didnt add that (which would make it less offensive slightly) it's still the same concept.

I always disliked the fact people are ready to shift the blame on others (especially relationship stuff) before themselves. It's always something wrong with the other person. People need to do a tad bit more introspection before they say said things. (Cuz a lot of the times, I can name facts that would turn off the opposite gender when I hear people say the above line.) Not saying it never is the other person, just its not ALWAYS the other persons fault.

Btw didn't they have speed dating panels last ACen? Two at that? How did those do?

I was joking a little bit. Sorry if it sounded rude. But in most cases it is correct though. It is much easier for a nerdy girl find a S.O then it is a guy.

I recall one year before I got on staff I sorta "volunteered" to help out a bit at one of the SD sessions. The girl/guy ratio was way way skewed. It also needed far more time than allowed.

Personally I'm more in favor of a less-structured "mixer"/meet-and-greet type thing with little or no emphasis at all on "dating." (Puts too much pressure on things IMO.) More like social time at an anime club meeting. Initial introductions. Let the friendships and all develop at their own pace over time.

A dating panel would make a person like myself nervous as all heck. Something informal where you have a more gentile way of breaking the ice, so to speak, would be much easier to digest.

yeah, that kinda thing would definitely work a lot better.
still, that's more or less what happens at the room parties, so i don't see a strong incentive for
people to go to the organized mixer, specifically.

Hey it's true in my case! All the men I dated were not compatible with my zodiac! I'm a taurus; the 'stupid zodiac!' After the fourth-fifth time you start to get paranoid and wonder if the bloody stuff is true! Mind you ALL of them but one said that they couldn't stand me being a mouse and/or wanted someone who was either asian or an extrovert =_= So I am just an oddball exception; but in DS case who knows?

EDIT: Maybe because it's the fact that I dated two of them online.

They tried to get Speed dating but I heard due to a lack of interest one failed. I am not sure about the other one.

And no I won't be doing this because I rather like my 2D world.

I can't say this for certain, because I don't go (Dating Games/Speed Dating/Auctions are hetero..I'm not) but most of the ones I've heard about there seems to be more men than women. There was also a dating auction where there were underaged people up for bid.

Me and a friend went to the speed dating panel this year. They had enough girls to fill the room, but had the guys lineup in the hallway and everyone talks for 3-5 minutes and rotates. My experience was since the room wasn't too big, it began to be loud in there, sometimes I couldn't hear the girl across from me. But it was all fun.

Why I don't show up -

1. I'm not a single woman.

2. Too much creepy crap going on at cons.

Ratio is uneven through no fault of the panel hosts, (some) creepers talking to body parts that aren't my face and way, way too much emphasis on dating, relationships and zomg, let's get married and have babies right now.

Slow down cowboy, we just met.

My main gripe (aside from these previous points) would be the odd times it's usually at - granted, I'm usually busy during the day at con, but I seem to recall it being at weird times like Saturday morning-ish. No good.

A mixer would be quite a nice change of pace because there's less structure (and therefore, less stress to talk a certain quota of people per session) and you can go at your own pace and meet the people you want to meet.

And more chance for impromptu dancing!

The ratio didn't even matter, because at the end it was the ladies who get to pick who they were interested in out of the bunch of guys. I know there were enough females to talk to. We didn't even have time to make a full rotation; there was a whole row that I didn't get to talk to. Meh, whatever.

Also perhaps having different panels for different age ratios might help. Definitly might help with people my age to have at least a drink to lighten the mood.
