Same as the Wii, artificial shortage to drive up demand. Though my local Walmart and Target still have them in stock so that plan isn't going as well as it should.

...Artificial shortages? Really? You're literally so desperate you're resorting to THAT?

Creating an artificial shortage is a well known business strategy that many companies engage in. It's really not that difficult to believe.

Where do you work? Sorry, but I haven't been following this thread that closely so I must have missed it.

We pre-ordered the deluxe set at Best Buy, and there wasn't a line or any wait at all. Not as much hype this time around. I'd like to mess around with the dang thing, but the update is taking FOREVER! We have been downloading the system update for close to an hour now, and the status bar says we are only a third of the way completed. Our internet speeds are fine, so I'm guessing Nintendo's servers are slammed right now.

Toys R us. And why the hell is there a update for a system that isn't even a freaking day old yet? That's dumb.

Yes, let's pretend for five minutes that bizarre strategy actually happens in the gaming industry despite it being completely illogical. Time's up, now let's get back to reality.

Nintendo didn't do artificial shortages with the Wii. That's a fact that was proven YEARS ago. The Wii was just selling that fast that Nintendo couldn't keep up due to not expecting that kind of demand. They had to produce MILLIONS of units a month to finally keep up so they could keep consumers happy. If it didn't happen back then it won't happen now. That kind of strategy doesn't make a lick of sense for Nintendo.

Actually, it does. If this is legit artificial shortage, Nintendo could be trying to keep sales, demand and value up. I doubt that it's because of manufacturing issues or delays, unless they had absolutely no idea what they've been doing for the past year. The components and such are all very common tech, so it shouldn't be difficult to pull the necessary supplies together.

That said, it's still a very risky tactic, especially at this time of year.

I resisted. I'll just wait..not like the system is going anywhere and nothing I gotta have right now.

Aiddon, they gave us 10 systems ON LAUNCH DAY! You can't tell me nintendo didn't have the time or the money to produce more then that. They are just expecting everyone to just file in line and buy it and keep demand high by not giving it to everyone. (remember the cartman land episode of south park?) I've already told a few customers to just wait and not buy the wiiU for a while at work.

I got to play with the demo unit at my Best Buy. Pretty neat piece of hardware. I couldn't really gauge the weight of the new Gamepad because of the security cord attached to it. I ended up playing a demo of Rayman three feet away from a 48" TV (I don't know the size, it was big). Good graphics and smooth gameplay, but from what I've read [link here] was that some of the apps aren't up and running yet.

My system for determining if I get a game system:
If I can think of 3 games that I want to play right now that are on that console and only that console, I will get it.
So I guess I will wait until more games come out to make it worth my while.

Get yourself Nintendo Land. What a fun game! I played it with my husband for a few hours tonight. It's challenging(not dumbed down for little kids), engaging(you want to keep unlocking levels), and nostalgic(chip tunes!). My only complaint is Monita... I think that's her name.

As for the game pad it's not heavy or awkward. It has surprisingly good audio quality and beautiful graphics. At one point my hubby switched the TV to computer so we could watch some stuff, and played the new Mario game just on the game pad. It was the full game too, just on that screen instead.

Another thing, Nintendo has the best file transfer system ever. When you transfer your Wii's apps and data over to your Wii-U you'll know what I mean. ;)

So took over hours after we got them on lauch day to sell out and we haven't got any in yet. WiiU does seem more like a true "Entertainment system" though. The handheld to play games while someone watches netflick seems cool (if your bandwith is high enough I guess). But Nintendo's consumer tatics still tick me off though.

I got Nintendo Land with my Deluxe Wii U and it is actually quite fun (though admittedly I'm playing it because Best Buy messed up with my copy of NSMBU, grrrrr). I would say the standout games are probably Metroid Blast and Zelda Battle Quest. I was also surprised with how well the gamepad works and the ease of use of the software. The net browser in particular is VERY nice.

So just a little update. Even though it's black friday and we have been open since 8pm last night. When I left at 1pm today, we still have WiiU's on the shelf. lol can't get rid of these things. I like being right.

Nintendo's lust for hardware revisions continues on, just for Canada..and I'm not sure why.

It's the Canada-only thing that really escalates this into 'WTF?' territory.

I don't see who it appeals to, because you could get a used Wii for less than that or a new one for not much more. Though, I wonder if maybe there's some weird demographical quirk that none of us knows about, and this is what Canadian gamers have truly been waiting for?

Watch, it sells like hotcakes. XD

Ahh, wait, Wired speculates that they're releasing it there because Canada has "almost third-world" access to the internet, so fewer people are likely to make use of a console's online capabilities.

http://www.wired.com...12/11/wii-mini/

Having never been to Canada, I can't say, but I do think that assessment may be a bit harsh. Even then, I'd probably want to at least have the online option.

LAWL Canada :P On the wiiU side of things I heard that best buy will not order (or get shipped not sure which) untill after christmas and before the launch gamestop only filled out a list of customers who wanted one and only ordered that many so they wouldn't have them on the shelves. All this I find funny.

Caught glimpse of my first sights of the Deluxe Wii U. Two of them at a TRU. Plenty of the basic. Almost unsure why Nintendo bothered to release a basic set.

Yeah, we have tons of the basic set. They proabably thought all the parents will want to be cheap and just give their kids the basic for christmas...except they aren't selling.

I have a friend who had one reserved for the sole reason that, if it turned out to be worthwhile and popular, he'd sell it on eBay. That plan took a hike once he saw all the reviews, plus hearing about that massive update snafu on release day. Now the store's pestering him trying to get him to come pick his Wii U up. He's refusing to do it now.

Oh god. That update disater. Another laughable fail at the WiiU. How in the right mind could nintendo think it was a good idea to force to "update" your console when it's not even a month old yet? At least that mistake got all the way up to the nintendo brass and they apologized. Not like they care though. They got the millions in fanboy money anyway.

Millions of fanboy money won't cut it for survival in a rather cutthroat industry. As I have watched this release for a month now, and comparing it with other high profile release, here is what I am thinking:

Nintendo should have come out with only one set initially, the Black Set. For such a high profile system and only one month out of release, there is not a justifiable reason why stock should remain on shelves, especially during the holiday season. The basic set has trouble selling where the deluxe is doing a better job. What Nintendo should have done is not provide the basic set yet and save it for later. The deluxe set should have been the only system out of the gate in its current configuration, and sold for $299.99. The basic set, which should have come later (potentially Spring-Summer to counteract any hardware introductions by Sony/Microsoft) should be $249.99.

I'm gonna stick to my guns and think that Nintendo is gonna pull a 3DS on this release too. At that point, I may buy the system then.

Played some with my friends, good party system. Better off just getting the deluxe Wii U though, comes with a lot more space and Nintendo Land (awesome game)

Perhaps the only reason they came out with the two systems was to appeal to lower income gamers for christmas and make money on both ends of the economy and rack in the dough. But the problem is they aren't that far apart enough (at least in my opinion) to make it enough of a reason to NOT get the deluxe version. Doesn't seem to have worked anyway.
