I have never heard anyone play the ocarina at ACen before and I'm very excited to be doing it next year! If any of you are out there and will be attending ACen please let me know I'd love to do a meet up!

I think ever since I saw that Songbird Ocarina had a booth in the Dealer's Room, I've heard lots of ocarinas around. I have two myself and can only play one fairly well. Depending on time, a meetup might be nice. We can do an ocarina ensemble! XD

What would be a good ocarina to buy if I want to learn to play one?

A pendant would be a good starter. Just make sure it's in a pitch you can enjoy.

Sweet potato ocarinas are fun, but require more experience to play correctly. I've played around with ocarinas for a bit over the past few years & still have trouble with certain notes on sweet potato.

Haven't tried any of the more extreme types, but the dragon tooth ocarins looks awesome. My next buy is probably gonna be an Eagle Bone flute.

Sadly won't be attending ACen 2012. So I'll be taking my cosplay up a notch for 2013.

Actually, a couple years ago someone brought an ocarina to ACen and played it in the Hyatt atrium on Sunday. Iirc, they'd been in the lobby or nearabouts at first, but then upon request moved up to the tenth floor so that the sound would carry better. It actually sounded pretty darn nice.

The Dragon Tooth Ocarina is absolutely amazing. As far as beginners I did start on a 4 hole but was a lil frustrated with the lack of notes and such a 12 hole isn't that bad if you really take the time to practice you can get the scales down pretty quickly. I would recommend the dragon tooth! It's very comfortable to hold. The new aria from stl ocarina is also an excellent choice.
