@Dark: The fact that we 'do whatever we want and the heck with everyone else attitude' is one of this country's issues and why many other people from other countries consider us arrogant, lazy, and stupid. I'm all for a change in the whole "If I want to kill myself over let me," because many times it's not just the person in question but everyone affected as well because of your said stupidity. The whole pop issue; if a parent drinks nothing but soda, most likely their child will as well and will be too hyper in school, which will cause other issues etc. A domino effect. Another example: If you suddenly acted up at your job and stole stuff and got fired, in the long run it will influence HR to monitor people that they hire and make it harder for everyone else who wants your position. Now you may not care, that's fine, but look at the big picture.

I'm not jealous; I'm saying you have to view it more like that. A lot of people have the whole "I don't care I can do what I want," mentality and the world doesn't work like that. Especially this country, from what other countries point out and view us.

People have stated that soda alters a person, much like caffeine in coffee does, mentality.

Still what freedom is there with food? Well soda/popcorn in general. It would be different if we needed this or if we made pop ourselves, but the companies are the ones who do, so they should have the final say so when it comes to their product.

Like I said it depends. Red bull doesn't do anything with me but I know this guy who used to swear by drinking pepsi during overnights and morning 5am shifts. I had to personally drink Mountain Dew amp to stay up those 9pm-10am shifts.

Pop is the same way; what might not make you hyper might make someone else hyper or do something else. Remember it's called 'Coke,' Cola for a reason.

And coffee is actually usually drank specifically to alter the brain....to stimulate it. It temporarily tricks your brain into thinking it has more energy to burn than it really does. If I have a 60oz soda a day it's still fine. Moderation isn't about a specific size. If someone drinks 30 16oz a day it's still gonna be bad for them. Should we then start regulating how many 16oz someone can buy in a day then? Or should we make it even smaller? Should the goverment start regulating where soda can be sold then so they can track how much soda people drink? Sounds silly? Just wait.

The restriction isn't about taking away your freedom to consume soda. What this restriction will mostly likely do is crack down on people on a mostly subconscious level. How many times do you go into a store, craving a drink, and go "I am going to buy the biggest soda possible, because I am thirsty and nothing will quench me but 44oz of Sprite"? Probably not as often as you go into a store and buy the biggest one available, simple because you get more for less. Most gas stations have a deal where you can buy any size drink for the same price. The savvy shopper in you says "Why not get the biggest, if it all costs the same? More for less!" This then, for most people, later translates into one of three things: 1) You finish the drink that you bought because you paid money for it, regardless of whether you are thirsty or not. 2) You mindlessly drink the whole thing because it is there and you aren't paying attention. 3) You don't finish the drink because it was way too much for you to ever consume, and half of it ends up watered down and flat in the drink holder of your car. If the option isn't even there to get a giant-size portion, people won't even think about getting a bigger one. They'll take the small one, and go on their merry way. This will reduce the amount of empty calories and sugar they might have otherwise consumed if given the option of a bigger cup. What is this country about, then? By your personal definition (stress on the word "personal") it's about giving the consumer access to all things and hoping they choose wisely. That is what this country is about, actually. Freedom of choice. If you're dumb enough to eat a high fat diet and not exercise, you shouldn't be surprised when your heart explodes. As has been mentioned here before, transfats, caffeine, and Big Gulps have been around for decades, and somehow the United States didn't descend into anarchy for having them. Most of the other countries in the world don't have banniations on this sort of thing. Somehow they get along okay. The intentions in banning these substances are good--but they're misplaced. Start dictating to people what they can and can't do, and the next thing you know, the secret police are dragging you off to Dachau or Lubiyanka. I'm not saying that's Bloomberg's intention. But down the road, it could easily become that--without even meaning to.

The United States is by far not the most arrogant country on Earth. Ever been to Paris, France? Yeesh, the rest of France can't stand those arrogant merdeheads. For that matter, ever been to Japan? We tend to ask permission before we go into another country, and usually give warnings, UN resolutions, etc. The French just bomb the hell out of you. And don't ask what happens if you piss off Russia or China. Actually your bring up good points.

To be honest I would vote for you Sentinel lol.

Another reason why the bans could be because humans are changing and we are simply getting lazy and quite frank dumb. Remember in the old days that kids used to go outside? Talk to people? Not text or call people on phones? That's what they did in our fore father's days. People back then used to work, chop wood, etc. and there wasn't plants or people drinking starbucks made out of yellow 5 and bugs. People used to cook and sit down, not go to Mcdonalds or Papa Johns and the kids have conversations through facebook to their own parents. Or post everything online, including their home address and telephone number.

So foods back then were different than now as well as genetics.

Now we have tons of bad stuff and people not really doing their share to fix it. People drink a big gulp and a Luther burger and call it a day, but it's their body. The problem is due to humans and people in general being pack animals, what one person does ruins it for everyone else and people being selfish and self centered in general.

Someone dies because they drank too much water and got water poisoning? OH LETS BAN this and that and sue the heck out of this even though it was their fault, thus making it hard for other people. Someone is smoking around a baby? Oh I don't care the person shouldn't have been around in the first place; I can smoke were I want even though it's a public area! Oh the baby has lung cancer? I don't care it's the parent's fault not mine. So the government is stepping up before another idiot dies from jumping off a building from too much drinking or their parents sueing a pop company because their son or daughter drank nothing but that.

In a mismanaged way.

To answer why this country sucks so hard in other place's eyes; because we are a superpower. We are the only country that can get goods anywhere or shipped from anyplace, do whatever we want compared to other countries, and we brag about how we have this or that, which is why the other countries judge us so badly and go "well if you are so bad then help us out!"

Oh but there is a more arrogant country than what you named Sentinel, even though people don't realize it: Philippines. About a good 75% of people I talked to in tagalog (online,) were arrogant, spoiled, selfish kids and adults. Not all of them are like this, I have some Philippino friends, or Pinoy, but so many I talked to projected themselves like this that it was sad.

But ummm...I'm done. I'm with Kii. I'm surprised this thread lasted this long.

See, I can understand the laws regarding smoking. It's pretty much been proven six ways from Sunday that smoking will shorten your life and everyone else around you. Despite that, we haven't banned smoking, just pushed it outside. For the same reason, we haven't banned alcohol--though in small doses, alcohol is good for you...

But there's a world of difference between smoking (which will likely lead to lung and heart problems) and drinking lots of sugar (which may or may not put you at risk for diabetes). One is for the general good. The other is someone telling us how to live our lives.
