We are a constitutional(representive) republic - with some elements of a democratic republic to be sure.

THE MORE YOU KNOW X3 No really I didn't know that.

@Dark: The fact that we 'do whatever we want and the heck with everyone else attitude' is one of this country's issues and why many other people from other countries consider us arrogant, lazy, and stupid. I'm all for a change in the whole "If I want to kill myself over let me," because many times it's not just the person in question but everyone affected as well because of your said stupidity. I get this impression from playing world wide mmos and when they find out I'm from USA "Oh you're from that country...I hate that country."

The whole pop issue; if a parent drinks nothing but soda, most likely their child will as well and will be too hyper in school, which will cause other issues etc. A domino effect. Them trying to ban soda is a solution, no matter how silly it may seem to be, because people have the formentioned attitude.

Another example: If you suddenly acted up at your job and stole stuff and got fired, in the long run it will influence HR to monitor people that they hire and make it harder for everyone else who wants your position. Now you may not care, that's fine, but look at the big picture.

Except those speed cameras are not legal in court. You can actually fight those and win because they do not give you due process. And we have are all agaisnt wire-taping and so forth, we just didnt' think we could do anything about it. But now we are voting these type of people out of office.

But why does that bother you? If they're jelous I dont' care. Also that example doesn't work because that is a conscious decision. Not some sort of brain alteration done by food. And the big picture is politiction are trying to take more freedoms away from US citizians. It's a simple at that.

It sounds silly I know, but just look at NYC. First ban trans fats, then smoking, then salt, and now soda. And they will keep pushing until we start fighting back.

I'm not jealous; I'm saying you have to view it more like that. A lot of people have the whole "I don't care I can do what I want," mentality and the world doesn't work like that. Especially this country, from what other countries point out and view us.

People have stated that soda alters a person, much like caffeine in coffee does, mentality.

Still what freedom is there with food? Well soda/popcorn in general. It would be different if we needed this or if we made pop ourselves, but the companies are the ones who do, so they should have the final say so when it comes to their product.

I didn't mean you Fujoshi. I meant them. And you CAN do what you want as long as it does not harm another individual.

Also health nuts are just that Nuts. Everything is fine in moderation. I've drank soda all my life, Others have drank coffee all their life and I'm not crazy, and neither are they. It doesn't alter your brain. And they also are not having a say in it. They are being ordered around by a dictator who has changed the law by adding more term limits for himself.

Like I said it depends. Red bull doesn't do anything with me but I know this guy who used to swear by drinking pepsi during overnights and morning 5am shifts. I had to personally drink Mountain Dew amp to stay up those 9pm-10am shifts.

Pop is the same way; what might not make you hyper might make someone else hyper or do something else. Remember it's called 'Coke,' Cola for a reason.

And I apologize; I didn't know it wasn't directly at me~

Bans smoking...IN PUBLIC PLACES. I used to smoke, and even when I did, I still didn't think my rights were being taken away when I could no longer blow my carcinogens in peoples' faces.Trans fats are crazy, disgustingly bad for you. Being pissed off at this ban is like saying you're pissed off at any health regulations. Why not let the people dye rotten meat and sell it? Why not keep the cocaine in Coca-Cola? Why have any food regulations at all? Seriously? REALLY?Salt? There's no ban on salt.....a restriction perhaps but you can't ban salt. It's f***ing vital to our survival.Soda is the lesser offender out of all of these things, but it's still total crap and if you really want to dump that garbage in your throat by the gallon, nobody is stopping you from buying three 16oz containers instead of one.

You're against this just to be against this, Dark Stranger. On the grounds that this is America and we can do what we want no matter how self-destructive. So please, tell me about how you think that cocaine and meth and heroine and all of that should be legalized and available freely for those who decide to destroy themselves. Oh, wait? That's bad? Food high in trans or saturated fat is proven to be just as addicting as hard drugs and in the long run, just as deadly.
Over-indulgence in this stuff is a serious problem for Americans, and it's a problem some areas have taken notice of. Restricting it seems sensible and like a nice compromise. You want cola, fine. But we're going to sell it to you in reasonable increments.
Land of the free, not land of the lawless. There plenty of things that we can do now that we couldn't do before, and vice-versa. This isn't something worth fighting against. You couldn't even get anything that size a few decades ago. A decade ago, even.
Make me wanna smash my face into all the things.

How old are you? Holler back when you're 60 or 70, and then maybe the "all my life" argument will be valid.

That's exactly what this whole restriction thing with soda is about. Where do you stand?
And coffee is actually usually drank specifically to alter the brain....to stimulate it. It temporarily tricks your brain into thinking it has more energy to burn than it really does. That you aren't tired. That you can stay up a few more hours. It boosts concentration. I don't recall any studies saying people who drink coffee or soda end up going crazy. You're just making outrageous claims for the sake of your position on the subject.

anything you stated is nothing near a Communist belief, ideology, or statement. As a socialist, I'm kind of perturbed that you'd blame it on a group of people you obviously know nothing about.

So your telling me that trans fats are just as ban for you as crack? Please. Let's look at it this way. How long has these things been around? If things were so *gasp* horriable for you why weren't thouands of people dropping dead from it (excluding smoking of course).

If I have a 60oz soda a day it's still fine. Moderation isn't about a specific size. If someone drinks 30 16oz a day it's still gonna be bad for them. Should we then start regulating how many 16oz someone can buy in a day then? Or should we make it even smaller? Should the goverment start regulating where soda can be sold then so they can track how much soda people drink? Sounds silly? Just wait.

I know plenty about them. I also know that America cannot switch directly to communism/socialism right away. They plan to do it by step by step. Is this a huge step? No, but why let them take any steps in changing America at all?

.... BECAUSE CRACK WAS FORMULATED BACK IN THE 80S???!!! Please, please be trolling.
And people have been dying from these things for years. Trans fats do not exist in nature. It's taken awhile for science to get a sufficient amount of data to say "hey, trans fats are totez bad for you"

WHY CHANGE AMERICA
by LinLindesu
LACK OF HEALTH CARE PROGRAMS BILLING THE ELDERLY MONEY THEY DON'T HAVE. EDUCATIONAL WORKERS NOT BEING FIRED DUE TO A CORRUPT UNION. RICH RUNNING EVERYTHING. POLICE OFFICIERS BEATING THE S**T OUT OF ANYONE ARRESTED. ( AND NOT IN A FAR AWAY PLACE, DES PLAINES BY ACen IS HAVING SOME MAJOR ISSUES) . CORPORATIONS PAYING OFF THE GOVERNMENT TO KEEP THEIR DISGUSTING PRODUCTS IN CITIZENS MOUTHS. "PUBLIC SERVANTS" DEMANDING WHAT WOMEN DO WITH THEIR BODIES. WHO (NOT WHAT) WE MARRY.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm telling you. And thousands of people ARE dropping dead from it...every year. Heart complications are the number one killer in America, and I'm not talking about the ones you're born with. How do you think those arteries got clogged? The magical cardiac arrest fairy?

The restriction isn't about taking away your freedom to consume soda. What this restriction will mostly likely do is crack down on people on a mostly subconscious level. How many times do you go into a store, craving a drink, and go "I am going to buy the biggest soda possible, because I am thirsty and nothing will quench me but 44oz of Sprite"? Probably not as often as you go into a store and buy the biggest one available, simple because you get more for less. Most gas stations have a deal where you can buy any size drink for the same price. The savvy shopper in you says "Why not get the biggest, if it all costs the same? More for less!" This then, for most people, later translates into one of three things: 1) You finish the drink that you bought because you paid money for it, regardless of whether you are thirsty or not. 2) You mindlessly drink the whole thing because it is there and you aren't paying attention. 3) You don't finish the drink because it was way too much for you to ever consume, and half of it ends up watered down and flat in the drink holder of your car. If the option isn't even there to get a giant-size portion, people won't even think about getting a bigger one. They'll take the small one, and go on their merry way. This will reduce the amount of empty calories and sugar they might have otherwise consumed if given the option of a bigger cup. And I'm pretty sure that 9 out of 10 people are going to be as satisfied with that 16oz as they would have been with a 36oz. Unless, of course, they're too fixated on what they didn't get.
If, on the off chance, you NEED that much liquid, soda is not a good option. Not only is it high in sugar and calories, but it's also completely devoid of any nutritional or life-sustaining nutrients. If you honestly need that much fluid, you're probably dehydrated and your best course of action is to get some water which, by the way, is not restricted in any way in NYC.

I know plenty about them. I also know that America cannot switch directly to communism/socialism right away. They plan to do it by step by step. Is this a huge step? No, but why let them take any steps in changing America at all?

No, actually, it seems you don't, as communism doesn't really have anything to do with what you consume. "Communism" is not a synonym for "dictatorship".I'm not against you having a differing opinion from mine on this subject, DS. I'm against you blindly spewing ignorant crap that you don't really know anything about to try to get people to see it your way.

Kii I love you in a non weird way; just saying. You basically said everything I wanted to say in such a mature, no nonsense fashion.

I'm not saying anything else because it's turned into a circle jerk right now.

And you think that only soda is the reason? What about bacon? People love to eat bacon. Pretty sure that's fatty for you. What about candy? No heathly things in there. Should we start "regulating" those as well for health reasons as well? And also, yes I do need that much liquid in a day if not more. But guess what, I still get to choose what to drink, And if soda is offering a 44oz for only 99c and theres a bottle of 12oz tea for $1.25 what do you think I"m gonna get for my money. If this was trully about health concerns, why not let the free market decides what it wants buy offering the healthy products for the same size and price as the not so healty ones. Cuz I'll say this, if I could get a 44oz of Ariazona pink lemonaide and tea for 99c I actually would get it a few times. But they don't. Prue and simple

So a centerl goverment telling me what I can and can't eat, trying to force me to buy certian products, and trying to regulate the market is not commuist or socialist? Cuz it's certianlly not what republic is. Or a free market, Or America for that matter.

Look, if you want goverment to be your mommy and daddy and tell you what how you to live that's fine. I don't, and that's not what this country is about either. Yes, it's seems silly to fight so hard over something so little. but guess what, we got to this point because we let all types of goverment, federal, state, and local goverment do whatever it wanted without paying much attention to it. And people like me are sick of it. And now we have to fight for every little petty freedoms we still have left.

Seatbelt laws are silly. But since I always buckle up since some idiot could smash into me at anytime and kill me, I do it instictivly and I'd rather be safe. I also always buckled up before this law came into place.

What is this country about, then? By your personal definition (stress on the word "personal") it's about giving the consumer access to all things and hoping they choose wisely. This can be extended past food products to guns and drugs, so choose your stance carefully. As for me, I can't even take you seriously anymore. So, you win? I guess?
Over and out.

That is what this country is about, actually. Freedom of choice. If you're dumb enough to eat a high fat diet and not exercise, you shouldn't be surprised when your heart explodes. But that was your choice, John Candy, so see you on the flip side. The Founding Fathers had the incredible thought of "Hey, people aren't stupid! They don't need an absolute monarch telling them how to live their lives!"

As has been mentioned here before, transfats, caffeine, and Big Gulps have been around for decades, and somehow the United States didn't descend into anarchy for having them. Most of the other countries in the world don't have banniations on this sort of thing. Somehow they get along okay. The intentions in banning these substances are good--but they're misplaced. Start dictating to people what they can and can't do, and the next thing you know, the secret police are dragging you off to Dachau or Lubiyanka. I'm not saying that's Bloomberg's intention. But down the road, it could easily become that--without even meaning to.

The United States is by far not the most arrogant country on Earth. Ever been to Paris, France? Yeesh, the rest of France can't stand those arrogant merdeheads. For that matter, ever been to Japan? We tend to ask permission before we go into another country, and usually give warnings, UN resolutions, etc. The French just bomb the hell out of you. And don't ask what happens if you piss off Russia or China. There's a reason why Wikileaks picked on the USA--Julian Assange knew we wouldn't arrange a 9 millimeter hemorrage for him, or introduce him to this wonderful part of the periodic table called "polonium."

And lastly, if this country sucks so hard and the rest of the world hates us...why is it when tsunamis strike, earthquakes rumble, and nutcase dictators go on killing sprees, the first question is "Where's the United States?" And then they complain we didn't get there fast enough.

Bottom line: none of you would like it if the UN elected me, Sentinel, the Boss of You. Therefore, you can understand why I'm not thrilled when Bloomberg decides he is the Boss of Me.

Actually your bring up good points.

To be honest I would vote for you Sentinel lol.

Another reason why the bans could be because humans are changing and we are simply getting lazy and quite frank dumb. Remember in the old days that kids used to go outside? Talk to people? Not text or call people on phones? That's what they did in our fore father's days. People back then used to work, chop wood, etc. and there wasn't plants or people drinking starbucks made out of yellow 5 and bugs. People used to cook and sit down, not go to Mcdonalds or Papa Johns and the kids have conversations through facebook to their own parents. Or post everything online, including their home address and telephone number.

So foods back then were different than now as well as genetics.

Now we have tons of bad stuff and people not really doing their share to fix it. People drink a big gulp and a Luther burger and call it a day, but it's their body. The problem is due to humans and people in general being pack animals, what one person does ruins it for everyone else and people being selfish and self centered in general.

Someone dies because they drank too much water and got water poisoning? OH LETS BAN this and that and sue the heck out of this even though it was their fault, thus making it hard for other people. Someone is smoking around a baby? Oh I don't care the person shouldn't have been around in the first place; I can smoke were I want even though it's a public area! Oh the baby has lung cancer? I don't care it's the parent's fault not mine. So the government is stepping up before another idiot dies from jumping off a building from too much drinking or their parents sueing a pop company because their son or daughter drank nothing but that.

In a mismanaged way.

To answer why this country sucks so hard in other place's eyes; because we are a superpower. We are the only country that can get goods anywhere or shipped from anyplace, do whatever we want compared to other countries, and we brag about how we have this or that, which is why the other countries judge us so badly and go "well if you are so bad then help us out!"

Oh but there is a more arrogant country than what you named Sentinel, even though people don't realize it: Philippines. About a good 75% of people I talked to in tagalog (online,) were arrogant, spoiled, selfish kids and adults. Not all of them are like this, I have some Philippino friends, or Pinoy, but so many I talked to projected themselves like this that it was sad.

But ummm...I'm done. I'm with Kii. I'm surprised this thread lasted this long.

See, I can understand the laws regarding smoking. It's pretty much been proven six ways from Sunday that smoking will shorten your life and everyone else around you. Despite that, we haven't banned smoking, just pushed it outside. For the same reason, we haven't banned alcohol--though in small doses, alcohol is good for you...

But there's a world of difference between smoking (which will likely lead to lung and heart problems) and drinking lots of sugar (which may or may not put you at risk for diabetes). One is for the general good. The other is someone telling us how to live our lives.
