Perhaps we could go with the premiere idea? If it's something big, we can fill a room. Better still if we could get a guest connected to it, better still if it's a member of the Japanese staff responsible for it. As previously mentioned, though, the cost might be an issue.

Precisely. You have to have a unique draw. Around here, the local Alamo Drafthouses have been showing the 35mm films of Studio Ghibli, and they've gotten a lot of interest in it.

Personally I'd love nothing better than to see Grave of the Fireflies and watch a lot of people's faces fall when they realize they've seen the saddest film ever at something like this, but I'd have to think ACen is intelligent and capable enough of pulling in a big name of sorts.

Or, quite honestly, why not put a huge concert at night instead of during the day? Concerts can be over by midnight too..

Concert would be very nice! Or have multiple concerts, if needed like an 18+/21+ concert perhaps? :3 idk if that would work super well since it's main programming and we want to have it open to all audiences as much as we can, but still it'd be cool.

So, I'm hearing that you'd like some kind of rooms where you watch videos that were open all night, eh?

Some sort of, oh, coin a term, Video Rooms? ;)

...We used to show them in larger rooms, but we just weren't having enough people show up for them to justify rooms of that size.

My little gripe is after 10/11/midnight-ish almost every single room plays hentai. Give us non-porn lovers some more to chose from :)

hmm in place of the soap bubble, kinda hard to think of a suggestion. id be perfectly fine with doing away with the dance as it doesnt interest me in the slightest, however the convention isnt for me and me alone. but as there has been a problem with people coming only for the soap bubble and thinking that thats what acen is all about, i think it is time to try something new. perhaps another concert or popular anime movie screenings

???

Actually, no. Two rooms play Hentai, leaving three that don't.
There is a slight flaw in my character.

I def dig the retro movie night idea. I like the soap bubble, but i understand some issues it seems it brings to the con every year. I think an extra cover will go a long way. The ball, as I understand, is a charity event and this is why it costs extra. But the soap is so popular! I dunno. ^-^"

A big concert would certainly draw attention. Maybe they could bring over a big name band from overseas for it. That would get some attention.

one of my fondest memories of Otakon is seeing Dir en Grey, and being in the first 20 people of a line that was almost a half mile long.. :)

One of the conventions that I go to had a -huge- problem with getting rid of one of our raves. We had drunks and just generally stupid people running around, terrorizing guests and breaking things in our hotel. Not just one person, either. A lot of people. And this convention only has 3,000 people going to it. Moving the raves/getting rid of one of them could cause a -huge- problem.

Also, complaining about jail-bait in your raves isn't a good step towards getting what you want, just saying. If you do want a +18/+21 rave, you should probably figure out a way to set up another dance so that you don't have an 'Occupy ACEN' movement on your hands. :'D

If we can come up with something that would create a mile-long line, I'd say we'd be in business.

Well, yes, yes. I'm pretty sure a big name Japanese guest would bring that, and probably a few otaku who wouldn't normally attend ACen.

Feel free to pitch the idea. If it works, everyone wins.

Yeah, I just love when at times they take a conversation that was going one direction and instead *correct* it and it goes completely somewhere else.

I personally don't think it needs to be replaced so much as it needs to be tweaked. Many have suggested this and I completely agree; PLAY JAPANESE MUSIC.
Then people can't complain it has nothing to do with Japanese pop culture and it may even deter the frat crowd. As a legit rave-goer, I don't know too many folks [myself included] who would like jamming out to music they didn't like or know. But when you play American tunes everyone knows you naturally attract more 'random' dancers. This music however probably appeals to many con-goers. Otherwise, I agree with the people who say it has nothing to do with anime/Japanese pop culture so chuck it.

Japanese music works. Throw in some dubstep and we're good. I say don't get rid of it either, since it's good fun.
Ummm....I'm going to take you to court!

Soapbubble and hardcore synergy arent going anywhere. Soapbubble has been goin on for the last 13 years and will celebrate its 14th year in 2013. This party has been an ACen staple for a very long time. This party is one of the things that separates ACen from all other conventions. Yes most cons have danced/parties now a days, but we have the largest and longest running party of any anime con in the country. Most if not all cons have copied our format over the years. We were the first con to bring out big name japanese DJs to perform. We were the first to dedicate an entire event to those same Japanese DJs. Other cons have tried, but I believe have failed to replicate what we've done here.

I know a lot of you hardcore fans resent those who come to ACen for just the parties because you believe they are ruining your con, but those people help contribute to the fund that helps ACen bring in certain guests and artists.

I started the soapbubble all those years ago and have seen grow into something I could've never imagined. I am proud to have created such an amazing party that so many people attend and have so much fun at.

I will say acens dance is way better and bigger than anime expos. When we went in July we thought it would have been bigger but we were wrong. After going to other anime conventions acens dance is the one I always look forward to.
