Looking for some Japanese wooden sandals, or geta, for my Violent Ken cosplay for next year seeing as going barefoot is not an option and these would fit pretty good with the costume I'll be putting together for him. does anyone know a good site or store where I can grab some? Getting things together early so I can save if they're expensive. x.x

I made my own* based on an old broken pair (cheap costume ones from Amazon). It looks like the Amazon ones aren't available anymore... but its probably because they only lasted 2 days (and barely at that).

The tutorials floating around the Internet for making the wooden part are pretty decent. You just need to cut the wood so to two ha (the "teeth" on the bottom) are shifted towards the back. (you can also affix two smaller pieces of wood to one larger piece). If I can find the exact drawings/measurements I used for mine, I can post them.

The hanao (straps) were a little more difficult... I took nylon rope and sewed quilt batting and then the fabric around it. Alternatively, you could always buy the hanao (maybe from someplace like this) and tie them into the wooden geta yourself. I'm still working on tying them correctly myself. The problem I had this year is that the knots I made weren't taut enough so the hanao slipped around a bit.

Also, if you go the route of making your own, make sure the bottoms of the ha aren't too smooth... you'll slip around all over the place. Even take some rough grit sandpaper to make the bottoms a little rough.

*My father-in-law cut the wood for me... we don't have a decent saw at our house.

Try:

Jlist and ebay.

I found some for about 20-30 dollars on the latter. It depends on what kind you get and what's your gender. Women's are a lot cheaper than men. Also if you have big feet it might be kind of hard.

Little late to add to this, I realize, but http://www.karankoro..._shop_zori.html is a great shop for Japanese footwear. Yes, it's in Japan, and yes, there's shipping, but it's fast and just about everything he sells is customizable. I look on eBay and Craigslist for my wafuku, too, but for the hard-to-find stuff, this is one of the places I look.
