old fart needs help anime for kids

My question, I have two daughters 8-10 and they can't get enough of cosplay and video games with us (parents). I want them to have their own interests in anime but really don't know what current shows and movies are really suitable for them (they can handle some adult content just not the ultra violent or over sexualized). they love Miyazaki films and Zelda games but after they attended ACen for the first time they really want to know more.
wondering if anyone could suggest some good shows for them to get into? games aren't really a problem but finding new anime for them can be.

As to newer things...gosh most of the stuff I know that's suitable is 5-10 years old actually. You could go with Naruto, which to my knowledge is the most recent age-appropriate thing to air on television. Shugo Chara is also relatively new, within the last 2-3 years at least. Very cute, has some mature themes, but it's made for a younger audience who won't understand those themes, they're just added for the rest of us to enjoy haha.
Can't think of anything else off the top of my head today.
Friday: Atelier Pierrot Fashion Show Model (8am-2pm), Levy [Fairy Tail] (2pm-5pm), Vaporeon [Pokemon] (5pm-end)
Saturday: Mint Neko Fashion Show Model (8am-2pm), Vaporeon [Pokemon] (2pm-end)
Sunday: Levy [Fairy Tail] (all day)
Possibly Houndoom [Pokemon] part of Sunday.

Princess Tutu - My personal favorite "girly" anime. I don't recall anything I wouldn't want a 10 year old seeing, though it has been a while since I've seen it. I don't know if a stream is available, but it was put out on DVD.
Kodocha - A bit older, but a good shojo nonetheless. It's funny and cute, and Sana is great both subbed and dubbed. I also don't know if this one is streaming anywhere, and I actually don't even remember if it was all released on DVD, but even if not, the first half is well worth the watch.
Shugo Chara - Admittedly I haven't seen much of the anime, and it's been a while since I read any of the manga, but based on my limited memory I'd recommend it. I believe it's on Hulu, but I'm not sure.
Hikaru no Go - Easily one of the best anime I've seen, and there's nothing objectionable in it. Also, it's currently subbed on Hulu (dub not recommended...
Mythical Detective Loki - Kind of weird, but it's a fun little show with amusing characters. Again, I don't know if it's streaming, but it was put out on DVD.
As for NEW stuff, only 5 episodes are out, but maybe Tsuritama? It's bright, colorful, has fun characters, and so far is safe for kids (also streaming on Crunchyroll), though like with HnG, there's a chance the overall fishing theme could bore younger kids.
Friday: Tsubaki (Sket Dance)
Saturday: Prince Alexander (King's Quest VI)

...Anyway, you mentioned Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's works. But I don't know how many you've seen. As of this writing, most of the catalog is readily available on dual language DVD, and some are also on Blu-Ray. There's classics such as My Neighbor Totoro and Castle in the Sky (Laputa), all the way to recent movies such as Spirited Away, Ponyo, and Secret World of Arrietty.
You might want to watch Mamoru Hosoda's movies. This director made a version of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time in 2006, and followed it up with Summer Wars. I enjoyed the latter movie quite a bit. I'd consider it a family movie, as there is very little violence, and the one bath scene is completely innocent. The dub track is pretty good, though it may have some gratuitous swearing.
Some of CLAMP's series are appropriate for kids. The group has created some fairly innocuous shows such as CLAMP School (aka CLAMP Campus Detectives), Magic Knight Rayearth, Angelic Layer, and Cardcaptor Sakura. These four shows are cute and have mild violence. The last of the four has more GLBT characters than one might expect, but it remains quite worksafe.
There's a lot of kid-appropriate content officially streaming on Crunchyroll. If you choose to watch shows for free, you get standard-definition streaming video with advertisements. Paying for a subscription will give you better video quality and no ads. Consider watching series such as two seasons of Digimon, My Ordinary Life, Pretty Cure, Sherlock Hound, and many more.
If you looked around ACen a bit, you might have noticed a few K-on! cosplayers. The original comics were serialized in a seinen magazine, but they're far from being obscene (some cursing, a few implications that characters might be lesbian/bisexual). The first K-on! TV series is a rather good adaptation, and it's appropriate for just about all audiences. The dual-language DVDs are now available in a fairly inexpensive collection. It might be a bit dull, since it's a slice of life show...
Some years ago, the Anime Cafe had a Parent's Guide. Unfortunately, like most of the site, it hasn't been updated in years.

Funimation released 52 of the 102 episodes. I watched the first 26 episodes on VHS fansubs. It's based on a manga series that was ten volumes long. The manga series has an ending, but I don't think the TV series actually got as far as that ending... In my opinion, Kodocha is a rather good show. It can be hyperactive and funny one moment, and then genuinely dramatic the next.

I watched all 75-odd episodes of Hikaru no Go (it was one of the last shows I watched on VHS fansubs). It's not exactly an exciting show... no violence, no outrageous comedy, no flashy or cute characters. Would I recommend it? Definitely. As long as you're patient and can pay attention, it's worth your time.
...Hopefully this post didn't run too long. Thanks for reading...

I have both seasons of Kaleido Star, and it is indeed not too bad and it is relatively easy to follow. My only gripe deals with some of the inaccuracies in terms of how a professional theater company would operate in "real life." None would endanger their performers or audiences by pushing as hard as they do in that story. You don't turn out a complex performance with a mere one or two weeks of rehearsals... Cirque du Soleil for example can take one to two *years* to rehearse a show.
I also find it interesting how Japanese people and families seem to be able to just jet over to the US for a quick short visit and jet back almost the same day...
Yeah, it's for the sake of the story... not meant to be real life. But...
Sorry, I just had to comment...
One series that comes to mind is Oh, My Goddess!. Something of a "classic" series. Some of the characters dress kinda scantily though.
Bamboo Blade maybe.
The Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars series.
Please Teacher.
Nadia: Secret of Blue Water (but watch out for the nude scenes...) Japan has a different attitude about some things, like when it comes to admitting boys and girls are built differently. They don't hide it.
Another thing that can recommendations difficult is I find a fair number of what appear to be "kid oriented" anime can sometimes take an unexpected dark turn.

Preater (its my first shoujo anime...its really good anime for me when i was a kid)
Angel Beats ( I highly recomended this, my mom also like this anime, she usually doesn't like watching anime and she admits its really good story)
Fairy Tail (there is a lot of action but its probably okay for them to watch this because there is not much violent in this)
Ouran high school host club (its shoujo anime and comedy...they gonna love this show...but if they want some more for it...i suggest they read the manga)
Special A ( i have a the same reason on ouran high school host club)
MyselfxYourself (i don't know if they like this anime but its inspiring anime for me)
Nadja (this anime is hard to find the english sub or dub but its good)
Mermaid Melody (its really good for kids who likes some fairy tale story)
Black Butler or Kuroshitsuji (this anime is very popular this years...even guys like them....but the manga has a different story so i suggest they watch anime and read the manga)

I agree. Seeing the Forest God get its head blown off and then turn into a tentacle monster would've scared the hell out of me as a kid. That's more for a 12 and up crowd.
I'm not sure about Oh My Goddess. Sure, Keiichi and Belldandy have a cute fluffy romance going on, but there is definitely an undercurrent of sex there too. Remember that Urd's initial purpose is to get both of them laid, and Urd's usual stripperific attire isn't something all that appropriate for kids. Teenagers would like it, but kids would be confused or bored.
Most of Azumanga Daioh would be okay, and the adult humor in the series would go over kids' heads anyway. You might want to skip the summer beach house episode where a drunk Nyamo explains sex to the cast (true, there's no words being spoken, but the symbolism and the looks on everyone's face might be hard to explain), or when Osaka goes to wake Yukari up with a butcher knife.
I'm looking at my manga/anime shelf right now and realizing that none of what I own is kid-friendly. Don't show kids Evangelion unless you want them to end up on the top of tall buildings with sniper rifles.
