My wife and friends and I have stayed at the Embassy for five yrs for ACEN and this year we were treated like trash and hoodlums! Friday night we were quietly eating and visiting with friends in the common area around 10 pm or so. There was no signage or anything saying the area was closed. The night security guard very rudely told us to go to our rooms like we were five yrs old. We were polite and asked why and he said the area was closed. We said there was no sign and asked why the area was closed and he ignored us and walked away. Our group went and complained to management, who listened only half way to our complaints. Saturday night after the con festivities we were sitting around and decided a dip in the pool would be great. We looked at the time and noticed we had about an hour till the pool closed. Away we went. About ten thirty the same night security guard with the power trip turned out the lights and fired up the water jets yelling the pool is closed as he was spraying chemicals in the pool while people are still in the water. One of our friends is a double amputee of the legs and cannot swim very fast. The guard yelled at him to hurry up. So back to the front desk we went. The night manager told us the head hotel manager would be there in the morning and set us up a meeting. Sunday morning we interrupted our sleep schedule to go talk to the manager. He was upset at how the guard treated us but kind of blew us off also. He admitted he didnt know what was in the bottle the guard was squirting in the pool but said the pool chemicals were automatically sprayed into the pool thru the water jets. One of our friends got sprayed directly in the face with these water jets when they were turned on. Once again there was no signage saying the pool would be closed early which the manager said during our talk. The head manager also stated that the new rules were in a memo that everyone was to get upon check in which we said nobody ever gave us anything upon check in. The head manager at the end of the meeting said the night security guard would be punished for his actions and we all got one night refunded from our stay. Now thats a good start but this was the last straw for our group. We are done with this hotel and will no longer be staying there and putting our hard earned money toward a hotel where we are treated like second class citizens just because we are part of an anime convention. I am in no way telling anyone what to do but if you want to be treated unfairly by all means stay at the Embbassy suites, however there are other hotels for the con and I think we should all hit the Embassy where it hurts and not stay there. If anyone else had problems or wants to comment on my rant please feel free. Thank you.

Alas, Embassy would have to stop serving breakfast and drinks for people to stop staying there...

Odd, the staff at the Embassy were nothing but polite and courteous to me and my girlfriend, even when we had a billing issue on Sunday morning (they were willing to knock a night's parking fee off the bill without any hesitation), and even allowed us to use the staff elevator to avoid all the people going up to go down during the checkout rush. Sounds largely like this one guy was a jerk, though.

For the most part the embassy staff I encountered were fine, but there was one guy who was rather rude on Saturday morning.

I needed to print something out in the business center and my boyfriend has a bad back (from an injury last fall), and he was sitting on the floor while I quickly printed it out.
A guy came over and yelled at him saying he couldn't be on the floor. I can understand this but he was rather rude about how he told us and we had only been in there like a minute or two at the time. It wasn't like we had been in there for 20 minutes or anything.

Again, he was just really rude about telling him to stand up.

On the flip side, the staff was very nice on Sunday when I asked if we could have a late check out.

Though next year may be they can plan better so they don't run out of towels on Saturday. (I guess it's a good excuse to have con funk.)

It is written in the rooms that the common area closes at 10 and that security will ask you to leave.

Pretty much this. I had bad experiences at the Hyatt before myself, (mostly due to con goers,) which is why I go to the Embassy. But I'm thinking about staying at the Double tree just to see if it's better. That and it's the only hotel I haven't tried within walking distance.

Sorry op that you had to go through that! At least you got a one night refund!

They should have had the area roped off like they do for breakfast if it was going to be closed. The security guard is a hotel employee and has no authority over me to order me to my room like I am a child. He SHOULD have said the area is closed per new Rule*state rule* will you please leave the area. I would have been fine with that. My stay at the hotel helps pay his salary so he should be nice to all who stay there.

Indeed. I'm I'm also quite sure that there will be people working at the hotel who look forward to these type of cons because they think that they can abuse their power for kicks. Meh. He should have stated it was in the room etc. and given you a chance before throwing you out in that manner.

.......they refunded a nights parking fee? Really? That's quite interesting...

My friends and I stayed at the Embassy, and when checking in they had us write everyone's names who was staying in the hotel room. Then we asked about parking and how much it would be. The lady proceeded to tell us that it would be 25 dollars for the whole weekend....misquote by a long shot.

When Sunday rolled around, we looked at our bill and it was instead 14 dollars a night. (we got there on Thursday). So we went up to the desk and told them about our misquote, and they said there was absolutely nothing they could do for us, and instead we had to pay that. So we just told them that what they could do for us was make sure every one of their staff knew the prices so nobody else would get misquoted again and run into that trouble. So for the fact that they refunded a nights parking fee for you guys but not for us just kinda ticks me off. That and every one else we talked to said they didn't have to write down their names. Just our group of people...

In our case, we were told up front $14 per night (plus $2 tax per night), with in/out privileges. My girlfriend left the con area Saturday afternoon because her team was playing the White Sox, and she doesn't get to go to many Red Sox games now that she's out here. So she got back late Saturday night, the parking garage was full, and she had to park somewhere else.

So Sunday morning after looking over our bill, we asked the guy who was at the front desk if we could have it adjusted to account for the fact that we hadn't actually been parked in their garage since 4pm the day before, especially since we now had to pay for parking overnight in a different garage. I dunno if he could check the last time our card had been swiped in the garage to verify that we'd left and not come back or what, but he was perfectly willing to refund the difference.

There may have been a difference between our situations simply because there was no miscommunication between staff in our case - it was just a simple fact that we had not received something we were billed for, and it was presumably verifiable in their records. (And by the way, they did write down my name and my girlfriend's when we checked in, so as far as I know that wasn't unusual treatment.)

I am sorry to hear about your difficulties with the Embassy staff. While we can not help the closing hours misunderstanding, as a member of the Special Needs Committee we do wish that you had reported your experience at the pool to our committee. This is one of the things they are trying to address. On one should be bullied and a double amputee should be shown consideration. Please feel free to contract our department about a follow up on this matter. I do hope none of your party is suffering ill effects from your chemical exposure.

It isn't an issue that the area was closed, the issue was the method in which we were asked to leave. (and where in the room? In the hotel information book? Tell me, how many people read that book? After my first time staying at a hotel, I only check it occasionally. I pulled it out after we had been closed out of other things)

Any change of usual operating hours should be posted in the area that the change that it is being done to. The common area should have signs posted at the main entries, the pool that got closed a half an hour early on Saturday should have had signs as well. And the one place my friend did not mention, the bar. The hotel book in the room says the bar is open until 2:00am. Saturday night it closed shortly before midnight.

Also, I am an adult, no employee of a hotel I am paying to stay at has the right to tell me to go to my room. They can tell me to leave an area because it is closing, but not "Go to your room" I should not be brushed off like I am being silly, nor should I be ignored like I am difficult.

I am very sad about this treatment because I adore the Embassy. The staff has been very nice and courteous for years, but this singular night security man has ruined it for me, how can I trust a hotel who allows an employee to behave so extremely beyond acceptable behavior? Even if it is just one, the extremity make me wonder how long it will be until other employees realize they can get away with it (there is already a bellhop who is borderline arrogant, but that was last year, he didn't have an issue with us this year) That and the safety issues that come with how he closed the pool. There are a LOT of dangerous what ifs that could have happened do to his unprofessional behavior.

samurai teddybear - definitely follow up with ES corporate on that. I'm sure they would not want a repeat of such an issue. Is that person even authorized to be turning on those cleaning jets?

I have not had any trouble with ES, but then I'm typically only there when I'm sleeping so don't have as much interaction with staff. I also did not get any modified rules when I checked in (and previously they've placed a paper under the door if something like that changed after checking in). I agree, it sounds like it was poorly handled all around.

FYI It is standard to ask for the names of the people in the room so that there is a listing of authorized occupants if someone loses a room key etc. I imagine in the rush of things, this isn't always adhered to, but don't worry that you were singled out for that alone.

Because of the nature of the suite rooms, Embassy has a major problem with room packing - essentially a group booking a room, claiming x number of people would be there and then letting more than the declared or even safely allowable amount. It's not safe to say 6 people are allowed in this room and then a big group lies and then packs in 10 or 12. Which I've seen almost every year. So while it's a touch inconvenient to those of us who don't engage in this behavior, listing the individuals who are allowed to stay in the room helps them maintain proper and safe per room allowances against those who do.

I echo following up with corporate. I personally had nothing but smooth sailing personally. I was also given a parking refund when our second car was charged incorrectly.

I also received a sheet on Thursday(I got an early check in shortly after noon) that had all their rules laid out, including guests being required to leave the commons at 10pm. I've gotten said sheet every year I've stayed there. That said, maybe they ran out or something?

While I am not doubting there may have been a mishap(I stay at enough hotels while I work conventions to have my own share of horror stories), I honestly believe this to be one of the best hotels, if not the best in the area. It is the only one I've never had problems with.

I have to wonder if it was less the hotel and more the security guard themselves. No one deserves to be treated so poorly.

A hotel is it's staff. They hire them to represent the hotel for which they work. If you are not treated with respect it is the hotels fault for hiring the people that should not be there or at least be better trained.

We checked in on Thursday also and it was around 2pm I think. I find it hard to believe they ran out, we just were not provided with the needed information(print outs) to make our stay less annoying for the one incident on Friday. The One security guard needs to be taught manners and how to deal with people. You can ask for people to leave an area. You CAN NOT ORDER THEM TO THEIR ROOMS! He has no authority to tell me where to go, but he could have politely asked me to leave the area because it was closed till morning. That security guard should be glad if he wasnt fired after the pool incident.. There is no call for the Health and Safety issues caused by his careless and reckless actions to the patrons of the hotel using the pool at that time. We pay for him to have a job there at least for that weekend.....

sigh it is sad though, because like you I had not previously had any issues staying here. This just makes me want to explore my options and not come back any time soon.

I would like to hear the guards side. To me it's starting to feel like OP might have provoked him.

"You can ask for people to leave an area. You CAN NOT ORDER THEM TO THEIR ROOMS!"

Actually, they can.

"He has no authority to tell me where to go"

He does, and he's given that because he works for the hotel. He can also get you expelled from the hotel, and out on the street, if he'd like.

I've been a security guard (not at hotels, but at amphitheaters, concerts, etc) and I'd love to hear the whole story here, because there's quite a bit missing.

Excuse ME??? He has no authority to tell me where to go, ONLY to ask me to leave an area that is closed. I am 33yrs old and have not been ordered to my room since I was 8!

A hotel is not an amphitheater or concert hall. Even then you can only make people leave the area, not send them to their rooms since you do not follow them home(unless you are a stalker....)

As far as the guards side I am sure he had to deal with allot of annoyingly immature people that weekend, but we were not those people. We asked politely why, and HE was the one who ignored the question and us when asked.

HE endangered people at the pool with turning out lights and pouring chemicals into the pool area before everyone had a chance to get out of the pool. I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR HIS SIDE on that one since that was not acceptable! Dark with wet floors, me blind without glasses trying not to get knocked down or shoved on my way to retrieve said glasses, my husband bumped and slipped because of the guards hurried, and reckless behavior. They are lucky no one was hurt or they would have a lawsuit instead of a complaint.

I spoke with the higher up management and they told me he should never have done any of that, and that the pool was to be closed at 11p not 10:30p. He was suppose to inform the pool area that the pool would close at 11p sharp at 10:30pm. This man is not a good employee if he can not even follow instructions given him like that.

There's a snarky side of me that really wants to respond (wow, you're 33, and acting like this?), but I'll just respond to the legal side:

He can, in fact, ask you - and make you - clear out of any area at any time. He's given that authority by the hotel, backed up when you sign into the hotel, and you have to follow their procedures. An evac is an evac - could be because of mutant ebola, rabid puppies, time to close down, or fire alarm. If you don't like that, I would consider finding another hotel.

I highly doubt a security guard would have been "spraying chemicals" into a pool - first off, most pools must be tested before they are "dumped". Proper levels are maintained, not just haphazardly put in.

I would guess that Embassy Suites in Chicago at Ohare uses a similar procedure to what the Lakefront one does..

referenced in this article:

http://findarticles....19/ai_n6021679/

Lastly, Chlorine is a highly volatile and dangerous substance and you have to have proper training to use the stuff.

That is not a night security guard's job.

So, forgive me if I'm a bit skeptical of all of this, but I have stayed in hotels in probably at least 30 states now, and I've never seen a "night security guard" do a damned thing with a pool.

What other options do you have for hotels? Let's go over them:

Hyatt: Drunk people, condoms, elevator issues. Also the rooms are smaller. Mixed reviews. The party people as well as some of the non obvious folks don't really care. (As well as the hell bent people who love the Hyatt regardless.)

Double tree: similar issues as the Embassy because it's the same corporation along with the Hilton. Mixed reviews, from the rooms being too small to the pool area issues.

Hilton: Have no idea; haven't been there.....yet. I heard mixed reviews about it.

So unless you go to motel 6 or have a car you might have problems....

EDIT: I'm actually curious about this because I stayed at the Embassy three times and at the Hyatt three times and I had more problems with the former than the later. Most of the issues were roommate situations among other things as well as being disorganized. I personally never had issues with the staff at the Embassy. They even held my stuff when nobody else would help me (other con goers.)

There are roughly 20 hotels? within a 2 square mile area. You're not lacking for options. (ALoft is close, clean, relatively quiet, and awesome, and it wasn't in your mentions, neither was Crowne Plaza, both of which had room blocks for ACen :) )

I know most of the Embassy staff--I almost always stay there when I come in for meetings.

I also have to believe there's back story we're not getting, and it may not even be with this group. It may have been with another group that was offstage from where you were who tainted his mood at just the wrong moment. It may have been he mistook you guys for another group. There's really no way to know. In any case, I think we've hashed this to the end of its relevancy. Your remedies are through Embassy corporate, and all their contact info is on their website. They do read and respond to complaints, because I have submitted them about other hotels in the past (I travel a lot for work, and have some pretty trippy travel war stories, like having someone else checked into my room with all my stuff in it). Aaanyway. Reach out to corporate and see if they can make things right with you. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but it isn't a consistent pattern with this hotel, and mostly we have rave reviews about them in the attendee survey we're doing. So as an isolated incident it is unfortunate, but not something that is going to alter the nature of our relationship with the venue- we love them and they treat us well, and they treat our attendees well.

I am still very sorry that wasn't your experience. Let's close this thread out because it's turning into picking and name calling at this point.

I mean close hotels, sorry I wasn't clear. Besides a choice few the rest you either need a car or you have to walk a distance.

This is to the 5 dollar an hour rent a cop. At places you have done security the rules might be a bit different. Some of your points might be correct, Im not sure. However whats right is right and wrong is wrong. Even if we were not in the right and we were in an area that was closed the way we were treated was very very wrong. Even if this guy had the right to ask us to leave, he should have done it in a nicer manner. Instead he decided to act like a feminine hygiene product with the personality of a used tampon. I know these guys take a lot of crap ACEN weekend but you still have to act in a professional manner which he did not. We actually had to go to a level of contacting a regional district manager over the Chicago area before someone cared. Things are now being handled. Im in a customer service type job and there are certain ways to act and treat people. I was raised to treat others with respect to get respect. I held my manners during both incidents but when I realized that nobody was going to respect us then I have to take things to higher levels. Too many people just ignore situations and say awww whatever, and that is also wrong. Like everyone else I put down good money to be treated with respect and not get burned, but when you burn me I dont forget. In conclusion I dont want to put this hotel on my no fly list but as great a place as it is and ive stayed there five years running or better, I will not stand to be treated like a second class citizen. I will no longer ever stay at that hotel again!!

No, since you know he isn't going to read this, this is for you to //complain// and start to treat other people like the second class citizen that you were so offended of being treated as. Yeah, I'm on the guard's side for this one. <_<
