So I've been browsing the Acen and Anime Central facebook groups for a bit now and I've noticed that a lot of people there put a lot of stock into relationships and getting a boyfriend/girlfriend (keeping them seems to not be as considered...oh ho ho ho).

While I think being an island is nice, sometimes it's nice to think about what you like in a person.
So I want to ask you guys (since I'm sure a lot of you aren't in those groups) -

What do you want in a mate? :3

Let's do two categories - superficial (silly things or looks) and not so superficial.

Superficial: Tall, dark hair, good scruffy beard, gives good hugs, big shoulders. Glasses are a bonus. *waggles brows*
Not so superficial: Supportive, respectful, honorable, keeps me on my toes (always challenging me to think and try new things). Confidence is a huge want.

I'm married(forabout 2.5 years now), but let me tell you my "perfect mate" looks nothing like the kind of guy I would go for. In fact, he has some of the opposite traits of what I was normally attracted to.

I always wanted a guy with dark hair, no facial hair, tall, and skinny. What I've got is a handsome, very tall guy with a shaved head(he looks so good with no hair), with an awesome fiery red beard, and he is a bit on the husky side.

Is he my perfect mate? YES! We love pretty much all the same geeky things. He got me into Star Trek I got him into ACen (he loved anime before, but didn't know there was a whole crazy convention about it). We connect on so many levels it's almost like we mind meld.

I know this thread is about what you look for in the perfect mate, but sometimes you really don't know what you're looking until you find it!

Superficial: Tall and lean. Good taste in music. I also generally gravitate towards darker hair. A guy who will watch crappy television with me, like Ancient Aliens and RuPaul's Drag Race.
Not so superficial: I need somebody who understands my bizarre sense of humor, and preferably has a decent sense of humor himself. I like it if a guy is creative and understanding and knowledgeable about a lot of things. Intelligence is a must. Being at least somewhat cultured is nice. Someone who is laid-back but gets what needs to be done done. Someone who wants to go places and see things, and doesn't become complacent. Somebody who doesn't settle for less and respects themselves and me.
Anybody who tolerates how neurotic and weird I can be.


Lucky for me, I'm dating someone who meets all of these qualifications (how?).So we'll see how this goes.

Superficial: Honestly, I have a lot of variation in attractiveness. I suppose as long as his boobs aren't bigger than mine (which is saying a lot) and doesn't mind that I have a thing for none to light facial hair.

Non-Superficial: Someone who will love, cherish, and honor me. I know it sounds like wedding vows, but in a relationship those are the underlying keys to making it work. Also has to be respectful of me, my friends, and my family. Appreciates how big of a dork I am, shares my interests to a point where we can talk and joke about them, maybe even bond over? I appreciate brains, but there's always more to learn. You never stop learning even when you're not in a classroom. A mix of spontaneous behavior (exploring new places and trying new things), but down to earth in personality and content with the relationship they are in currently.

S: Shorter than me (amazon women scare me) red or black hair, small frame or tight build. A heathly size is good, but not looking for a girl my size.

NS: Smart, or at the least clever (stupidity is a huge turn off, so if every sentence ends with an upward lilt...LIKE THISS~..Every time~..like it's a question~)..not gonna work. Alittle liberal minded (conserative tends to be to hateful for my tastes) Love anime and gaming, maybe some other geek stuff. Oh...and accept the power and glory of the PONY~

Superficial: Shorter then me (Shouldn't be THAT hard, I'm 6'4'' lol),average'ish' build, nice legs also will get me hooked. Black hair.

Nonsuperficial: Understanding and open to different things (Where I live, most look at my interests and scoff), smart (just like Nikku, I don't have a high tolerance for "stupid",) mature minded (I can't stand immaturity) good sense of humor, and caring.

Superficial: Ideally, the tall (I'm 5'2" so that's easy XD) skinny guys that have lanky arms and legs XD. I really like beards especially those chin strap ones, but any kind of facial hair is fine. I don't really care what color of hair, honestly I prefer bald men most of the time.
And OF COURSE a huge Ghost in the Shell fan like me :3.

Nonsuperficial: Willing to accept me for who I am, being supportive of me and my goals, not selfish or narcissistic, and not being super clingy as in not making a huge deal out of it if we don't talk/text/phone/etc for like two-three days. Like Xeno and Nikku, smart--and they don't have to be a genius, but just a good head on their shoulders and just overall a compassionate and caring person.

Not so superficial: One that is not oblivious to the world around her and not afraid to tackle touchy or thought-provoking subjects. That's the big one. Can't stand people who can't intellectually stimulate me. Isn't the loud party type either. I wouldn't say obedient, that would be creepy, but more respectful and honest than anything. As long as they keep themselves healthy and have a good view of themselves that's even better.


Found a few women who fit some of this criteria but due to the fact I move around a lot it's been hard to start this thing called a "relationship" proper.

Guess they're not big on living in some of the best ski resorts in North America ;3

For me there is no such thing as a perfect mate, since everyone has some kind of flaw and arguments are good in a relationship.

I would prefer to find a guy who:

-Is open minded

-Kind of tall, but that doesn't matter

-Has hair, not a buzz cut or the ghetto cut as I put it

-Has a sense of humor

-Has a fun streak or down to earth/open minded

-Can get along with me

In all honesty, I never put too much thought about what my perfect mate "looked" like, rather what he does. I mean, yes I would like them to be attractive to me (on the skinnier side is a plus) and to have a personality that meshes with mine. I also figured that if I found my mate, I would just...know. Its a bit hard to explain, but I shall go about it like this....I've been with my boyfriend for over 3 years, and I'm more than sure that he is my soul mate. Just before I met him (again...kinda), we found out some things about my mom health wise and so I've been super emotion since then. Luckily my boyfriend just takes me into his arms and lets me cry. Anywho, that sort of mushyness aside, this past year of schooling I transferred to a college 2 hours away from home so instead of being able to see my boyfriend whenever, I can only see him once every two weeks or so. Let's just say, it pains my heart to be away from him and my family. So much so at times that I become melancholic. D: I guess you could just say that I know he's "the one" XD

So my tl;dr:
Superficial: Attractiveness (somewhat on the skinny side), have to be able to handle my nerdiness and my growing amounts of manga collection
Non-superficial: There for my emotional and whatever support I need as well as affection <3 I love hugs and kisses and cuddle time!

• No piercings. This does not include standard ear rings. Anything beyond that is again something I don’t really like but sometimes make abstentions on.

Well for me. I always have this dream from time to time. The person I want....I don't know what she looks like. It never really mattered to me what she looks like. She can be heavier or lighter. But not like in need of a wheelchair big. As for personality, She has to love geeky things, it doesn't have to be the same as me but something. She can't be the type that plays mind games. Also I love to be in contact. It doesn't have to be everyday but if I ask a question about something I do expect a response (not to something like "Hey how was your day" but more like "Are we still getting together tomorrow?" you know...and important question) That's really all the major points for me

NS: Honesty, intelligence, open mind (two way street), artistic, driven to succeed at what they set out to do (maybe entrepreneurial-ish), and understanding of others. Enjoys the sci-fi/anime/game culture, or has the potential of enjoying it.

Doesn't spend life in a frenzy of mindless activity, but rather takes time to enjoy it. Ability to make any situation enjoyable for themselves without constant entertaining by someone else. Doesn't like to nag others about insignificant things.

To add on (because I can!): NS - Accepting of my general weirdness (bonus if he thinks it's cute!), patient (I can try the patience of a saint. A lot.), makes me feel special/loyal, takes care of himself and most importantly, smart. And S - Can dance or at least willing to learn, strong.

Superficial (For the record I'm doing this as long as we say "perfect" doesn't have to be this way necessarily): Long hair (I like short too but prefer long), average or thin (I don't mind girls with a little extra weight though), pretty face, and nice smile.

Non-Superficial: Happy/mostly positive attitude, flexible, caring, a little nerdy (has some nerd hobbies different than mine but we share one in a big way), willing to spend time together at least once a week, let me have time with "da guys," accepting of who I am, has her own goals, works, and just fun to be around. Bonus points if she's willing to cosplay, do karaoke, and go dancing (I suck at dancing, but truthfully find it fun. )

Superficial: Blond or brunette, although I do have a secret soft spot for blondes. Thin, average, athletic, or borderline chubby build (yes, I do fit this category too, so I can ask for it). Minimum of two years younger than me (I'm 26). Shorter than me (I'm 5'9"). Actually, these are not superficial wants, they are requirements.

Non-superficial: This one is completely open. I don't want to close my mind off to a certain "type" of person. That's how habits and patterns develop. No one is "weird" and everyone is "different." Better yet, surprise me!

NS: not being jealous of me because most of my friends are guys and doesn't suspect anything when I hang with them, someone who loves to talk about really in-depth things, and who is optimistic--like if we get into a fight or have a dispute, it's progress learning about each other rather than a detriment, or just seeing things positively.

S: They would want to cosplay me, and it'd be pretty cool if he worked in the medical field as well (not a requirement but surely a plus) so we can talk in medical terminology together. :3

XD), Collects something or at least is not adverse to my love of toys XD, GOOD SPELLING AND GRAMMAR, also prefer that he is the main breadwinner so I can be a stay at home mom .____. , Doesn't smoke

Not Superficial: Christian, Not jealous of my SUPER close best friend/understands that sometimes I'm going to choose her , not possessive, wants kids/marriage, sturdy/has common sense (I am really zony and ditsy unintentionally so I need someone who can look out for me ), IQ similar to mine but in different ways (S: Better at Sudoku than me, worse at crosswords, but enjoys both)
