So I made a wand for my Ginny Weasley cosplay out of sculpey, painted it and let it dry. I'm quite proud of the way it looks like real wood, the only problem is I'm not sure how to keep the paint from rubbing off on my costume or onto my hands. I had this issue with a prop gun once and it kind of left my hand quite black as well as took a good deal of authenticity out of the prop. Can I seal the wand with a coat of clear nail polish? I'm a bit afraid of ruining the paint job so I would like to hear some opinions before working on it further.

Depending on what kind of paint you used, you might be able to spray it with a can of clear acrylic.

I've always had pretty good luck with acrylic paint on Sculpey overall.

Yeah, I painted it with acrylic paint.

Acrylic sealer or gloss/finishes will do the same, and keep everything all nice and not smudging/wearing. I just use the basic $0.79 bottle you paint on over the dry finished project, though I'd shy away from Apple Barrel brand, as they tend to be runny & inconsistent. Target probably wouldn't have them (lacking art supplies and all), but Walmart and any craft store like JoAnn or Michaels will have them in abundance and a million more finishes than you can imagine.

If you want it to resemble wood/Potter wands, I'd argue go with a matte or semi-gloss sealer/gloss finish -- matte will have no shine at all, and semi-gloss will shine/reflect just a little bit, like polished wood, so either could work depending on the effect you desire.

Semi gloss would probably be the best. I buy the "authentic" wands and they have a slight gloss but not heavy. :)

Yeah, I'm hoping for the semi-gloss effect. Not too shiny where it appears plastic, but with just enough to catch in the light otherwise the paint looks a bit flat and boring. If only I could make it light up, but that may be a bit too ambitious for my level of prop making. XD
