When was the last time you heard Sandstorm at a rave? Or, really, anything that wasn't skrillex-esque?

The old school techno that used to play during anime con raves was the best. Not even because of the quality of the music, but because it's light, happy, bouncy, and the simple Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss beat is something anyone can dance to, even us less-talented nerds.

In the Summer of 2011 I attended the first con in my life that was a mix of genres in the rave (both the new stuff, and the old stuff). Since then, theres been nothing but "BRR BRR BRRR WEE WEEE WAAAAHHH"
And I simply do not know how to dance to that. It's so... heavy, you know? It's too serious. And not that good. In my opinion, anyways.

Am I the only one who wishes this change had never occurred?

I just don't really like 'dubstep' because it is a ridiculous genre which shouldn't be one. It isn't anything new. Anywho, the last time I went to the rave was 4 years ago so I don't know how it is now, but I can only imagine. There's more than one DJ so when one comes on that plays heavy dubstep I'dyou can leave and do something else. There's two dance events so I would you would probably want go to the Soap Bubble and not Rave.

Ugh, the raves and their music have always sucked to me. Don't get me wrong, rave music is cool, like Otakootie said the Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss beat is very easy to dance to.

However, this ISNT what they play. They play very loud music with crazy, non-rythmic sequences of like sirens and other nonsense. But there is no beat! lol, How are we supposed to dance to that. Mosh pit style? C'mon, I'm a chick...spare my hair, nails and shoes plz.

If this change you speak of is to blame, then they need to get back to basics and really dismiss that horrible genre they call music. I'm glad to see i'm not the only one who found a problem with this.

... I'm a little confused here.
Neither are considered "The Rave" ( a rave is a title that often goes hand in hand with drug use)
There is the Hardcore and the Soapbubble.
The Soapbubble has more dubstep than the Hardcore but neither honestly has that much.
Where I do see eye to eye with you , There is usually 6 plus Djs and 1-2 will play some dub step.

My suggestion when planning to attend the dances is to research the various DJs, find out the set list ahead of time, and go during a period of Djs you like vs. the ones playing dubstep.

Well, this will be my first year at Acen. The most DJs I've experienced at one con was, I believe, 3, and they all played dubstep. If at acen they actually have variations in the music, then thank god for that. Something for everyone, right?

The rave was Underground Groove/Hardcore, what have you. Like I said, I haven't been to them in a long time so I don't know what either have turned in to. Oh and with drug use... I'd consider both a rave then. The last time I saw the line for the dances there was a heavy scent of a certain drug and it wasn't tobacco.

I've noticed them playing more dubstep as of late, but that's to be expected with any new genre that's blowing up at a time. Three or even two years ago I didn't notice as much and I'd love to be able to dance to something more fast-paced and upbeat, but we'll see this year. I think last year I just got in too late and the Soapbubble was winding down with some dubstep (which is great, but stinks cuz I only got to dance to one or two songs before everything started winding down).

(and I'm pretty sure ACen likes to refer to them as 'con parties'... not raves. Raves generally bring up imagery of illegal things, and ACen as an organization does not want to be associated with such)

Anyway, two and three years ago I was able to stay for a long time at the Soapbubble and I had plenty of upbeat music to dance to.

I haven't heard much dubstep at a con dance yet, though maybe I've been too drunk to notice. Regardless, it's a popular genre right now, so it makes sense that it will be played.

I'm finding that dubstep and hardstyle/hardcore are becoming genres that really appeal to me anyway, so I wouldn't mind hearing more of them.

Sandstorm type stuff was popular in the late 90s/early 00s, but if you hear it now, I imagine it's mostly for nostalgia.

the whole "rave" being synonymous with drug use is just a stereotype. I've been to plenty of "raves" sober and had an awesome time.

as far as how to dance to the heavier stuff, just do whatever you want to. catch the rhythm of the bass, and follow that. honestly, no one will judge you, and if they do, then I'm sure they're not having as good a time as you are, I can guarantee you that.
I agree that alot of this screeching, grinding, squealing stuff is kind of annoying, but I don't have a problem with a tasteful mix of wub wubs and dum tish dum tish. It isn't all bad haha

dubstep hate seems to be the new internet hate of the month, just like how MLP was one, and any prerelease of blizzerd games since 2004. i am not a fan but i don't go out of my way, i also not big on dance music and have no ear on it. if it up to me i make it all 80's pop songs.

Am I the only one who loves almost all genres of electronic music?

I love Ambient, Breakbeat, Chiptunes, Dance, Dubstep, Electro, Electronic Rock, House, Hardcore, Progressive, Techno, Trance, and a few sub-genres of each of these.

I think why I like dubstep is that it has crunchy almost chiptune sounds with lots of bass and sections of different instrumentation combinations to carry the melody. Plus, I love minor keys and dark sounding music which dubstep can often lean towards.

For dancing however I would like house and hardcore mostly since it usually has a good "four on the floor" beat which is fun to dance to.
