So ive done some dyeing before but it was basic colors and they turned out pretty nice. But I need some help guys. I need grey, like a light grey and a slightly darker grey ...now I has searched all the stores in my area and its frustrating me that I cant find any grey dyes. So i looked on rit dyes website and they said i can make a good grey with their black and just having the right ammount of water and dye will make it turn grey...those jerks...i did it exactly as they said and it turned purple...doesnt even look like a grey, it freakin purple!

So i have seen online for rits that they do have a grey i can order...but im afraid to trust rits again. has anyone else run into this problem?

First and foremost, is your fabric synthetic (polyestor, etc) or natural?

Im gunna be honest I forgot D: I got the fabric a while ago and I was procrastinating till now. I got it in the denim area but its a lot softer and more flexible. my friend says its probably a cotton

The black RIT dye has never turned anything black for me, always purple. If you want a true black you gotta dye with the ink stick (no idea what else to call it) from a black sharpie. I assume for dying things gray you could also use the sharpie technique, you'll just have to use gray sharpies. You fill a bucket (or whatever you are dying in) with warm water, throw the color stick in, mix, toss your fabric in, make sure it gets all over the fabric evenly, and let it dry, then wash.

Note: After washing it will be abit lighter than what it was before washed.

Another Note: Sharpies are on sale at micheals every so often for a reasonable price. I assume you don't want to spend $3 on a marker your just going to snap in half

Try Dylon. (Either in the black or grey) They do sell it at Joann's and it's a little stronger than Rit. If -that- fails, you possibly have a synthetic fabric and I would recommend iDye Polyester (It WILL say polyester on it). Just remember that both of these will stain -anything- it touches, even if it's just from dumping the dye water out. Make a quick run by Walmart and get a $1 plastic tub to dye it all in, then dump it outside somewhere no one cares about.

Rubbing alcohol will take off the dye in your rub/wherever you pour it out. You can even use it to clean the pot you used to dye (but never use it for food again!)
