i still go to acen, i just want a 2nd con at the 2nd half of the year, my friend hype up reactor, and maybe it was good in the some magical time, but that con was crap. i had a full weekend pass and didn't bother to showup on saturday, i think i wrashed gurren lagann set 2 (best speech of the series is EP11 on that set) and played warhammer 40K. at least at acen there is more stuff to do in genaral, i played table top games on saturday, and the artest ally is very good. i really want to go to youma mostly becuase people from TGWTG show up alot there. maybe they do at Kollsion (which i was going to go too but i just got a new job).

and the hotel your talking about is acen hyatt or youmacon hotel?

EDIT: the only time i really don't show up for acen is friday mainly becuase i am beat by then by soap bubble/hotel room party/ lack of sleep. and really have nothing to do, i think it can be said for any con really, sunday is mainly the day you go raid the dealer room.

EDIT: looked it up, the hotel looks nice and doug walker will be there so that;s great too. only one issue. why why oh why isit on thanksgiving weekend, why oh why oh why.

I wouldn't oppose a move to Chicago but if you think the prices now are bad, wait until those who drive, park, etc. deal with higher costs. Also depending where it's held, the 24/7 status could go bye bye. There's a lot of ups and downs to staying in Rosemont or moving to Chicago, honestly I can go either way. Depending how much Chicago would be overall I would consider just commuting for a day or two. It would be a hell of a lot easier for the Chicago residents as they can easily take the CTA over.

As far as •IF• they would move to Chicago, last time I asked staff (sometime last year) they didn't sound keen on it. My opinion is if they want to grow even more in popularity and to the mainstream, go for it but make sure you have the money to back you.

i agree with you, i think rosemount is holding back the con, but at the same time chicago isgoing to make things worse for others stuff then space. 10$ extra forabage is one thing, you have to think about hotels prices (it going to be more expensive downtown then at rosemount i tell you that, there's also parking downtown and anyone can tell you that is hell, then there is food, and food cost more downtown then anywere else. and taxes, the fingerthing meens the taxes.

but i am sugeesting to move outside of chicago, like aorura or napervile.

And moving else where might work, but do any other cities like Aurora have decent convention centers? I wouldn't think they would have anything that could hold even half of what ACen has.

Well I've been saying for several years now that they really need to get some type of professional convention planners or something like that. I know a lot of people have rebuttals for this idea though but really something needs to change.

I also looked around to see if there was anywhere bigger the con might be able to move too since it seems to be getting so big but it seems like there are no good options nearby where the hotels and convention space are so close together and the capacity they'd need.

You can already do this, the blue line stops pretty close to the convention.

I can't think of anything immediately in the Aurora Area. Unless they used the local University. But I doubt that would hold 23,000+ people. (But I could be wrong)

I can't say much about naperville. I'd be fine with either location if that happened though. As I'm relatively close to both locations.

Our Touhou panel (Welcome to Gensokyo) got kicked from it's space that I worked hard with the panel staff in March to get for us due to the large amount of people who did and wanted to attend last year.

3pm London Room on Saturday, we were happy and excited.

We then without notice got kicked to 11:45am on Saturday at the Dublin room in the DoubleTree, which is less than half the seating of the London room.

We got kicked for Brina Palencia to have a guest panel at that time.

While I understand that guests get priority, I wish Acen staff had contacted us about the change so that we could have worked something out instead of getting entirely shafted.

I work all year to make this panel new every year and I cannot put into words how upset it makes me to have this happen and the response from Acen be "Perhaps there was some miscommunication?"

Let me make it clear Acen, treat your panelists better before all your left with is half baked panels due to shafting the panelists who DO care about more than just the discounted badge.

I love Acen, it was my first convention ever. I'm upset though about this whole situation after working hard to schedule the panel and get it into a big room to lose it without any form of notification.

Me and my fellow panelists, not so sure we'll be coming back next year as a panel group.

Just thought i'd toss up a little tidbit at least a little in regards to guest discussions & announcements. I was a conchair for acen 2k-2003, and headed up US guest acquisition for '04 and '05. Even in the days when there were a lot of J industry guests, being able to announce them is no easy matter. Communication is invariably slow, especially when a lot of times, a third or even fourth party is involved (contacts within publishing companies, sometimes both on the US & J side back in the day), and 95% of the time a decision wouldn't be made on their end until a scant couple/few weeks before the convention (based primarily on their mostly busy work schedules - like say the R.O.D. production staff in 05 or any seiyuu or mangaka). Even when we have staff members that are associated with certain guests, like say a Kenichi Sonoda or some such, getting an early confirmation is very rare. With the downturn in the industry the last few years, I can imagine the lines of communication being harder to manage.
Even when it comes to some US guests, there is a bit of good fortune that goes along with hard work involved. For example, my getting Steve Blum and Beau Billingslea to Acen 05 after they hadn't been to an anime convention in many years, was the direct result of an acquaintance I made over 20 years ago and even then took months of work. Just wanted to say that it's really a lot more difficult than you think :)

so i keep my involvement these days to just making Anime Hell :)

While I'm no Touhou fan anymore (the 10th game and onward failed to impress me), I could FEEL how heart-wrenching things like this must be for panelists who do GAF just from reading this. You have my complete and utter sympathy and empathy. Did I seriously read this right? Did your panel actually get cut completely?

We didn't get cut completely but we got moved to a room and a time that we are very unhappy with, especially since I worked with the Panel Staff to get the room we had before this situation occurred.

The only reason we'll still do the panel if we do it is for the audience. It's really the reason we work hard is to put on a show the audience can enjoy.

I stated maybe a month ago and said this would be a make it or break it year.

Broken.

Will I get a badge for Acen? If I do another event that comps it, yes. But MAPS is not getting my money. Maybe a sunday only for merch. Maybe if they guests have something to do with the anime industry.
I'll give my money to The Embassy for a weekend , I'll go to the shoots, I'll wander in cosplay.

I just thought Acen was poorly run before last weekend. Now I truly believe it is a con that does not care.
Attendees give them FANTASTIC ideas. Were any of them listened to? Nope. Did I see things that would have been prevented had ideas been followed through? Yes. Every day.

I will stay on the forums because, well, I like you people. I have made so many friends here, hell, I'm getting married to someone I met on here.
And btw, those in charge of this here forums, are some of the best staff we have. Keep it up guys.

This year Acen I would rate an unworthy 2 out of 10. However, I must admit, that the program guide was quite nice. Perhaps that’s why the badge cost was higher… the quests were fewer… organization across the hotels were designed by a child… not to mention that C2E2 which is grander than ACen was 2 weeks before Acen. What was up with the irt ppl this year? Was it just me, or did like 50% of them find it necessary to wear sunglasses all the time… even when inside? It was too awkward to walk up to them….

Sorry to hear. If you don't come back to ACen, I hope you do find another con that you'll like. This year had some bad stuff (see my post in gripes) but my friend's and others helped me. I know that things can't be great for everyone. So again, I'm seriously sorry it wasn't good for you and your wife. :(

I'm not likely to return to ACen next year. This was only my second year...and I've found that after two years with a lot going wrong, that maybe I should try some other cons. I can't say I'll never come back to ACen...but from my vantage point atm, it isn't worth the money to me.

Yes, I am definitely going back to ACen next year!! I have been going for the past seven years and I manage to have more and more fun every single year! My mom has been going for 7 years too and still loves it and got her boyfriend to go lol, and my boyfriend has been going for 3 years I believe and he LOVES it and his mom and brother are going next year :). Keep 'em coming, I dont know if I will ever stop going <3!
