As of this posting, the AMV department has been folded into Video Programming.

Since I'm taking the department over with a fairly short time before the convention, we're going to be throwing things together in a hurry-- in particular, there's probably not going to be a contest.

However, we will try to take submissions for AMVs, and we'll try to screen (almost) everything that's submitted, pending some rules that I'll post as soon as I can.

I've never run an AMV room before, and am open to suggestions, so... lay them on me!

Hrm...this worries me somewhat considering the AMV room is a large bulk of my Saturday evening and Friday late night entertainment.

Please say that Iron Editor will still be on. @_@ And perhaps some other programming favorites aside from AMV Hours (Looking at last years schedule)

I wish that I could say that.

Unfortunately, there just isn't time for me to throw that together this year. I have plans for next year, but I realize that that's the far-distant future. (A contest would be easier than Iron Editor, and I don't have the time left to set one of those up, so...)

Hrm...No Iron Editor...This makes me a sad Hikaru Kitty. v_v

As for suggestions:

Probably check past years AMV Room schedule for a general layout. Most of it is various genre's of AMV's (Comedy, Drama, Action, etc).

Fri Evening is normally AMV contest vids

Sat Evening is normally Iron Editor followed by funny AMV's

Fri and/or Sat late night (11pm or 12am) is generally hentai AMV's.

Still wondering what might have happened for this to get folded into Video programming so late in the game. Would have thought some stuff should have been put together by now by the former AMV department. Especially something like Iron Editor. Sigh.

Biggest Suggestion: Hopefully you have access to the computers all these AMV's were stored on in past years. It's always been quite the setup.

Oh man, so there's no AMV contest this year? I was looking forward to it.
Yay, ACen!

Well, I'm seeing what can be done. We might be able to do something, but time and resources are short this year.

I think it'd still be great for AMVs to be separated into categories, so if people prefer a certain genre of music and AMVs, they know what time videos like that would be played.

I think it'd also be cool for an amateur hour of some sort, for people that are good/great at editing, but not confident enough for contests.

Also, do you know, as of yet, what the dimensions and such are for submitted videos yet? Like video size, format, length, etc.?

That's still under construction, but short form is going to be "Probably five minutes, absolutely no longer than eight" for length. I'll give you all more details as we work them out.

Unfortunately, the entirety of the AMV department leftshortly after ACen last year. To be honest, until Josh approached the ConChairat our last planning session, we were talking about liquidating AMV alltogether. Josh has saved this department from extinction, and we have faiththat he will do AMV justice in the years to come. Please bear with Josh thisyear as he takes the bull by the horns.

Unfortunately as well, it was also to be expected with how their department was treated.

The lack of throwing anything together until this point, on top of considering just cutting it, also shows that ACen still doesn't care much for this department.

Best of luck to you Josh. Hopefully you are given the tools to at least make an attempt at success.

It's not that we don't care, we've been trying to find a department head for most of the year. Unfortunately no one was volunteering and that sometimes happens in conventions that are volunteer run. We do care about it, and are currently trying to find it a good room and time so they can run their iron editor event. If we didn't care about it at all it would have been cut when the department staff left. It sometimes happens that there just isn't anyone willing to be management. Like when I took over registration, no one else was applying, and when I took over panel programming, no one else was applying. It's actually hard to find people willing to put in so much time and effort. I admire Josh for taking over AMV while having his own video programming to manage. And we're all thankful that he saved it from having to be put off for our 15th anniversary.

First year at ACEN, so I have nothing to lose ;), but Thank you VERY much for taking on the extra responsibilities of doing the AMV programming, Josh! Speaking as one who works on a (much smaller) convention staff in Michigan, it's a lot of work with not enough appreciation. Your efforts are appreciated here!!

I've been going to Acen for the past 9 years or so. I think this year might be my 10th in a row. I remember my first Acen fondly. I was sick as a dog with a major headache, fever, hurting eardrums, scratchy throat and swollen glands (Happens yearly around change in season). I ended up camping out in the AMV room Saturday and watching AMV's for the first time. They helped me feel better and got me hooked on AMV's. ^_^

It was my 2nd year I discovered Iron editor. ^_^v

From what I've seen, the AMV room is pretty popular. At least for the events in it I've gone to in the past. Things like Iron editor, Too Hot for Acen (Hentai AMV's), Hentai: What you wish you could unsee (Hentai AMV's), AMV Hell 3: The Movie, etc held packed rooms when they were going on.

I'm glad to hear we'll have it this year. And I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Iron Editor. ^_^

Iron Editor also holds some fond memorys.

Fond Memory 1: BOOM HEADSHOT!

Fond Memory 2: Gundam Lens Flare Nipples! Because Lens Flares = Pts!

If you were there, you know what I'm talking about. ^_^

Looking forward to more AMV room news.

The AMVs are, hands down, my favorite part of any con. I do hope this all gets worked out. I was looking to submit something to the contest, so my request is that you please make sure to keep the department around and have an official contest next year. Thanks!

Could there be a chance to let video game AMVs and Non-japanese cartoons be allowed in for AMVs as well? There are some really talented people out there who do excellent work with video game footages.

Hope it works out well Josh. I really love amv contests and i wish to submit a few amvs of mine I've worked on. Do you have anyway of letting us submit amvs to acen this year? Well here's to acen and I wish that we get news soon whether it's a go or a no. Amv contests are one of the main reasons I try so hard to make them. If it's not available this year there goes all my hyped up work for 2012 amvs for acen. Anyways please keep us updated. I'd hate to see a con without an amv contest.

Also I appreciate you for taking up the task in such a short time. Plz do your best and good luck.

Oh before I forget for iron editor, if it's passed can we get a link to register for us amv artists. So that way we can actually be assured that we don't have a big confusion like before in some other cons. Like they switch the building or apparently you weren't registered due to an error etc...

Well, it'd be really nice if the AMV contest was back. I loved the event in Anime Boston and haven't turned my back to it yet. I even made an AMV this year! (though I'll admit, it's my first and I think it's somewhat novice) If there isn't a contest this year around, it'd be nice to at least have somewhere to submit AMVs and just have a block to watch them. Anyways, that's my two cents.

We do intend to accept submissions, and show them. We just don't think we're in a good position to set up a contest this year.

Instead of a formal contest, why not just ask those in attendance to vote for their favorite submission they just saw, at the end? Simple as pie, no headaches involved (simple majority wins), and everything feels like (almost) normal.

If there's a need for a prize for best AMV (not just a title and the glory), why not a small little trophy with printable plaque that can say something like "Best AMV in show - Anime Central 2012" (most trophy shops sell those for maybe $12-18 max)? Or if not a trophy/plaque, maybe some other small gesture (ie, small ebay gift certificate, itunes card, clever thing found at Mitsuwa et al)? At any rate, even without a symbolic "best in show", running it's a nice gesture, simple enough to do, and everyone gets to feel all warm, fuzzy, and Kumbaya. :3

That might work, but I asked around on AnimeMusicVideos.org, and the overwhelming response from the video creators was that they'd rather have no contest than not much of a contest.

Still, I'll look into it.

It's so strange that most of the best known editors from the org are here in Chicago and yet every year Acen seems to push AMVs farther and farther away. I wish I could say I could volunteer, but I can't, I'm far too busy with Artist Alley stuff. I'll ask around. It shouldn't be like this.

Good luck Josh, I hope things are going okay for you. If you need any help PM me, and I can try and work out volunteering as much as I can. I'd like to save Iron Editor and the contests. Perhaps I can convince Brad to come back and MC it (iron editor that is), since I live with him and can pester him about it until he gives in.

Well, next year, it'll be back-- I just don't have time to make anything happen.

However, we are taking submissions for videos!

Send submissions to:

amv@acen.org

We need you to use mp4 format, and limit yourselves to less than seven minutes. Also, please restrict yourselves to things that we can show to mixed company-- keep it PG-13.

We'll try to show every single video we get!

The people on the org know what happened for the past few years here. They'd rather not be involved with it until there's change. Hopefully having the entire staff quit has opened some eyes.
