Hey y'all! For ACen 2012 I plan to cosplay Sir Crocodile from One Piece.

One thing I've noticed about his costume is his jacket. (click for picture!)
I plan to buy a long black jacket and then some faux fur to sew around the collar. The only problem is, I have no experience with faux fur.

How would I go about sewing the faux fur?
Any tips or links providing tutorials would be greatly appreciated! :D

Ah, Marineford Croc <3

In this case, since it's not an extensive amount, you'd be safer with backstitching it on by hand. With that width onto the collar, all of the faux fur would clump into your machine and eat it up.

Seconded on the hand sewing. It will probably be easier than machining. anytime you work with fur, it's going to get EVERYWHERE on EVERYTHING. If your pile is long enough you might be able to get away with not turning under the edges, but if you do, trim the pile down on the piece you're turning under and pull out any fur that gets caught under the stitches. doing that goes a long way towards hiding your stitches and join lines. If you're covering a large lapel, you might be able to glue the fur down and not sew it at all. I'd probably turn under the edges, glue them down, and then glue and hand sew the rest, because i'm paranoid.

After working on a furred vest and tail for a Flareon costume and Smoker's jacket (and soon Tashigi's too), I third the motion that fur should be hand sewn. I made the mistake of trying to use my machine, and it gummed it all up...

One little thing that I learned from working with fur is once you get it home from the fabric store, THROW IT IN THE DRYER. It'll knock any loose pile out and keep the shedding to a minimum. You can also do this after you cut the pieces out.

Also, since you'll be working with a black coat, a lint roller will be your best friend. Trust me on this. They cost like 3 bucks and it'll keep you from looking like a big, hairy, white dog decided to nap on your coat. The stuff is like packing peanuts. You think you've vacuumed it all up and cleaned up the loose pile, but you'll turn around and have a giant, white hairball stuck to your stuff. It can get annoying (I've experienced this with green fur on a white coat...).

I also don't recommend washing it in the washing machine. Hand washing is alright. The machine will mat the fur and make it look all clumpy. Do not do this unless you want to spend HOURS brushing the sucker out.

Oh, and for future reference, if you need a strange colored fur (i.e. Green), you're better off finding faux fur already in that color, or getting the real stuff and bleaching then dying it. Faux fur will not dye. It's completely synthetic and will not hold any dyes you might use (yes, even the polyester dyes). You can take the tedious route and color it with Sharpies, but it's a complete pain in the butt.

Good luck, hope this helps, and I hope to see you at the One Piece photoshoot!
