This is my first year making cosplay on my own and I've hit a snag in my planning. I'll be cosplaying as Sayaka Miki from Puella Magi Madoka Magica and I can't quite figure out how I should make her top.

It almost makes me think of a corset top with buttons instead of lacing. With some adapting to a pattern that might work. That depends on how snug you might need it to be depending on your bust size as well. Also there are many shirt patterns that might come close to this with again some adaptation. You might want to check our your local JoAnn's(or fabric store) when they have a pattern sale $1-$3 each is not a bad deal Look for corset or summer top shirt(sleeveless) patterns and see what comes closest to what you need. From what I can tell from the picture, the blue is a separate piece from the white (I'm thinking armor, correct?) If this is the case, what you could do is make the corset-type (or blouse) top like Stormy-chan suggested above, but just do it in white. For the blue you could look for a bikini pattern and just use the top piece pattern. You could even do it in a different fabric to get the effect in the picture. Now, for the white portion of the top, are you going to make it one piece, or is it going be able to open at the buttons? If it's one piece then you can just add a gold cording-type trim and buttons. But, if you wan it to open, then you might have to alter the pattern a little bit so account for the seam allowances at the opening. Oh, and if you do decide to do the whole thing as one piece (instead of separating the white and blue), I suggest that you use a thicker gold cording for around the blue, to give it the illusion of being separate. Oh, and if you can't find a pattern that fits the design that doesn't have straps, you can substitute the fabric straps for the clear bra straps instead (or eliminate them all together).

Lurker: I do plan on making it one piece, but I really like your idea! I'll definitely look into finding some thicker gold cording for the blue part.
