Hey! While this doesn't really have a lot to do with cosplay, we figured it was time to move this out of the Homestuck thread and into one of it's own! If this is in the wrong place, please don't hesitate to tell me or move it or whatever, haha~

So anyway, a while ago something popped up in the Homestuck fandom which we affectionately call the Can Town Project. Basically, it's a fandom-wide canned-food drive, where we all bring food, stack it up into cute little towers and buildings for fun and fandom reasons and then donate it all to a local food shelter. You can find more information about it, along with other planned meetups here, on the official Tumblr page. After some deliberation, we, meaning your friendly neighborhood Homestuck cosplayers, decided that there was no reason to keep it fandom-exclusive, so we'd like to invite all of you!

We plan to donate everything we get to the Chicago Food Depository. The lovely Toast and her boyfriend have gained us the possibility of getting an entire room to devote to this, but as of yet I don't believe that anything is completely set in stone. Please feel free to bounce ideas off of us, or just chime in to say that you're planning on bringing something!

I'm going to talk to boyfriend tonight (We live a bit aways from each other, haha) and see if I can get some more information. The Chicago Food Depository basically want us to register on their site and they'll have a list of places we can drop the food at, or they can come and pick it up in Rosemont. I'm not sure if picking up at Rosemont is going to cost us anything though, so I'm going to ask them that as well! Any other questions you guys think we should ask?

Golly, the idea of Can Town just tickles me pink--it's such a grand and good-willed project~! I also love the idea of building cute little towns before the pick up XD I most certainly offer my assistance in any way needed~! -salutes-

Hmmm, as for questions: when exactly, during the con, do you think this will be operated (whether that is in a room or otherwise)?

Whoopie, people are showing up! This is great, now we won't clog up the cosplay board proper, haha! Do you think it would be an okay idea to send the link to this thread to the official Can Town blog on Tumblr, or would that be weird?

Hm, it would be quite nice if we could get it all picked up! If not though, I'm driving down with my parents, and they're aware of the project and are more than willing to help shuttle food down to wherever it needs to be taken. We have a big van, so hopefully we'd be able to take a lot.
Also, you may want to ask if there's any particular food they want! Like, y'know, they may need to stock up on beans or vegetables or something. It's not a super important thing, but it may be nice to ask.

My first thought was that we were going to have this run on Saturday and have it be one whole meetup by itself. But now there seems to be the possibility of having it run all con. I think? If that happens, I was wondering, who would man the station the whole time? I'm guessing we all want to take time out to go to the meetup, maybe some panels, and hang out with other Homestucks. Do you think that if we get this set up in a room we would need someone there the entire time?

Hmmm, I wonder if it would have to be manned at all times? Thinking on it, that seems the most professional thing to do--so a donation isn't missed. I guess we would need more information on that, really! I'm sure it'd be closed up by the (potential) time for the Saturday meet-up, at least. For pannels and the sort, I'd like to hope that there could be at least one person who's able to stay in, y'know? Well, as long as there is a good volunteer group willing, of course!

I think a hard list of group volunteers will be needed eventually! Perhaps a list of those interested could be made? In the end, those volunteering could exchange contact information with the others on the list so everyone knows each other's location~! ...In a non-stalker and completely professional way, of course~

On a side note, I remember having a community service requirement in high school--so I think this could even apply to those who have schools with the same thing!

Wait, wait, what? I-I'm captain now? I mean, Toast and her boyfriend are the ones that seem to be doing a lot of the actual work to get us space to work and such. I guess I'm okay with that, though, haha!
Yeah, it'll be a really good idea to get around a list of volunteers right now, I mean, why not start a little early? I'm still waiting for a bit more information from Toast about the whole "perhaps having a room to be in maybe" before doing a while lot. I mean, if we have a room we're going to need a lot more volunteers than if we just do it right after the photoshoot proper, y'know?

Oh! Well I assumed since it was your idea and you started this thread...ack! There I go assuming again, sorry!! But I'm glad you don't mind~ x3 Toast and Boyfriend (since he hasn't a name, he is now dubbed Jam. Toast and Jam~) can be co-captains, too, or maybe first mates OwO (mates, get it~? Since they are dating~? Ha...ha...it's a stretch... =w=;; )

Then a list it is! If the room does happen, then more volunteers is certainly a must (with time slots and everything)! But that can be dealt with later, when there is more info~

It did occur to me that we'd need people manning the room. But if the con is giving us a room, wouldn't it come with someone manning it? I mean the thing I picture in my mind would be a room by either the panels area or the gaming area, and from what I recall there's always a staff member sitting outside the doors of those rooms when they're open.

Perhaps that would be something to ask about?

Huh! I guess you are right, huh? They'd be like the overseer making sure things are going right, wouldn't they? Definitely something to find out!

However, if there ends up not being a room (which is also perfectly ok~) and we collect all the cans at the meet-up...well, we are left with a whole bunch of cans now aren't we~? How would those be handled? Would they just be towed to someone's hotel room to sit or...?

Jeez I need to get into a habit of checking this daily, huh!

Boyfriend is really stressed out atm, but do we have a list of questions or other concerns that we should voice to the IRT team? That way I can e-mail everything at once. Right now we are waiting on an e-mail from the IRT head who is helping us out; she is getting some more information and passing this along to others to discuss. I am also doing a ton of stuff right now (Working on helping someone publish 3 books + some other stuff) so I'm a little scatterbrained, but I definitely want to help out with this so if there's anything that you guys want me to pass along as far as questions and whatnot, I am up for it! I like doing this kind of organizational deal.
As far as IRT and that is concerned, they tend to move around a lot so it would better to be safe than sorry about having people watch over CanTown. I don't mind hanging out for a couple of hours if you guys need me to! My moirail and I ran an Artist Alley table last year so we pretty much sat it one chair all con, we're used to it. We both also totes totes want to help out with this.

Aw, thank you so much, Toast! You and boyfriend (Goose, really? That's kind of a silly name, haha) continue to be awesome and helpful!

Really I just want to set some things in stone, such as how long we're going to have this room, whether or not we're going to have any staff help, and how big the room may be, but I have a feeling that those aren't really things they can tell us quite yet, haha.

I'm kind of nervous about just sitting around in a room all day instead of being out at the con and stuff, but I don't wanna leave you guys hanging! I don't think we'll be able to get a lot of volunteers after the panel and the meetup start up, since we'll be pretty busy broing out. Do you think that will be a problem? Or maybe we can shuttle people from the meetup into the room with the cans and then let them bro out from there.

Also, MissHime, about what we're going to do about the cans, I have officially volunteered my parents and our van (with their permission, of course~) to drive any cans we have to a drop-off site if need be. There's also the possibility of someone from the food bank maybe coming out to pick things up I think? Maybe?

Haha, yes Goose! Like Goose from Top Gun. Maverick was taken, so he went with Goose who is his second favorite!

I'm really, really hyped up to hear from them. >_< Hopefully it's soon? I'm not going to go to the panel or anything I don't think (Unless moirail wants to go, then I will tag along) because I haven't done a meet-up before and I don't really go to panels anymore, so I can always stick around. I think it would be best if we could set up a collection box of some kind, "Donate your cans here for CanTown!" and then build cantown on Sunday morning, maybe? We can dismantle it before the meet-up, that way everyone can go meet up and have their fun times. The box can be out all of ACen (I don't mind taking the cans to my hotel room at night so that we know they're somewhere safe if you want) in the room that we're going to CanTown in, and maybe we can get someone from IRT to stand down there. Really I don't know anyone who is going to steal cans from us - who brings a can opener to a con and walks around with it? but you never know!

Well, we already have a contact on the IRT, so we're not really in much of a rush. It's been really easy to forget that the con is still four months away, huh, haha! I'm sure they'll get back to us in a reasonable amount of time, don't worry~

I think that if we want to have the most people, we should probably have Can Town on the Saturday. Most people stay for Friday and Saturday and end up packing up and leaving on Sunday. I've never actually been there for Sunday though, so I have no idea how many people we'd have. I know my first instinct was to have it right after the normal meetup, either at the meetup place or to shuttle people from the meetup to our room. Several of us who are helping with Can Town are also running the meetup, so we can relay information to the meetup group either way.

Yeeah, I don't really think anyone is going to steal any cans anyway, but I'm still kind of nervous about leaving things unattended. Probably just me being paranoid though, haha~ I like your idea of having a box and a sign just in case though, that's probably the best course of action.

Aw! I hope Mr. Goose's stress leaves him soon! And goodness gracious! Three books in addition to other stuff?! Miss Toast, you sure have a lot of things, yet still aid us in Can Town ;A; You two have been so very helpful, so I hope all your stressors go away!!

I agree and think you can have some peace at mind knowing that Acen is still months away~! So I think we are safe to wait to start asking questions Just but out discussion and mini-planning, I think we are off to a great start~!

Also! I like the idea of having a collection box! It would help with organization tremendously~ And I don't realllyyyy fear anyone would take cans >w< It's true you never know, but then again cans are heavy so they couldn't get away with many and not get caught by horde of trolls!!

Quick Update! And just as I posted this, Goose said not to e-mail because this is the busiest time of year for them. So I guess we will wait and come up with questions to ask her first!
