I have seen so many incredible make-up jobs done by many cosplayers. More than once, I have ventured to the store and stocked up on tons of different types of make-up! From different foundations to eyeliners to eye shadows and lip liners sit around in my closet. The only problem is that they won't apply themselves. I can try again and again, but I just look like I am wearing make-up. It never really has much effect.

Does anyone know of any tips, tutorials, or forums that can help me out with the make-up? It sucks a lot to spend lots of money on a costume and have my face mess it up! If you can help out, I'd be thrilled.

There was something I found lurking on /cgl/ about eight months ago, but since I replaced my computer I don't have it.

But I do remember tips from it:

Best to apply makeup to the contours of your face, so that it has more of a harden look like a guy. Also to get concealer that matches your skin tone or close to it.

It would also help to walk/sit like a guy as well.

Ah man I wish I could share this cosplaying magazine with you! It has an entire section on crossplay. Some of the more interesting tips include making your eyebrows a little thicker and putting a light shade of concealer on your lips to make them appear less full and pink. Avoid using TOO much eyeliner, it makes your eyes look larger and more feminine. A little bit is always recommended though, it's always used on stage. Also, try observing guys in public places. How they sit and pose will really help you if you have to get ready for some pictures!

I've been cosplaying guy characters for a couple years now, but my make up has always looked terrible! I normally just use a little powder to try and keep the glare off of my skin (which never seems to work). I was wondering if it would help at all if I were to apply a little foundation and concealer before the powder, or would that look to feminine for a guy character? (I don't wear make up normally, so I really have no Idea what I'm doing ).

Honestly, regardless of who or what you're cosplaying, concealer and foundation are a good idea. It'll cover up any blemishes you have, prevent glare (so there would be no need for whatever powder you're using) and it'll help any make up you put on top if it stay on better. It shouldn't make you "look too feminine,"--honestly, what makes you look feminine is everything else, especially blush and eyeshadow/ eyeliner. Just make sure that you pick a concealer and foundation that match your skin tone.

Thanks! I'll be sure to get a good foundation and concealer to match my skin. And since the blush and eyeshadow are what create the more feminine appearance, should I avoid useing them entirely, or would I still need to apply a small amount?

What shade of eyeliner would be best? Would a thin layer of black be fine, or would it be better to go with a lighter shade, like maybe a brown?

Brown or black is up to you, I think it depends on your character. If their eyes are really dramatic and stand out, go for the black. If they're more subtle, more natural, go with a shade like brown. I even use purple sometimes, it works great with green eyes and it's not as shocking as you'd expect, it just defines the eyes more. But it really works best with female cosplays or show-y characters.

Um...like I said, I've never really crossplayed so I can't give you any definitive answers. However, whenever I put on makeup, I always feel like my face looks really washed out before I add blush, since it makes your face all one uniform tone, covering up both blemishes and any natural redness your face may have, so you may want to experiment a little with it, if you don't like the way you look with just the foundation.
