University of Chicago's free, one-day anime convention, UChi-Con, is scheduled for Saturday, January 21st! We will be located in the Harper and Stuart buildings on the Main Quad at the University of Chicago.

Convention highlights:
-All-day anime screenings
-(Tentatively) A good number of diverse speakers this year, including manga-ka, authors of anime-related books, and professors who have had lectures on Japanese animation
-Assortment of panels(details TBD)
-Video game tournament
-Cafe with an assortment of Japanese dishes and sweets
-Cosplay contest
-Raffles
-Dealers/Artist Alley

As we have more than a month before the convention, many details are not yet set in stone, and our website has not been officially updated. Stay tuned for updates!

I'll also take this time to advertise that we are currently looking for dealers and artists for Artist Alley. Any artist who would like to set up a table at UChi-con may do so for free, so please send me a message if interested! :]

It's on my birthday?
And it's free?
And you have Japanese sweets?
And it's only an hour or so from my house?
I am definitely going.
Definitely.

By the way, have you planned which games you're going to hold tournaments for?

Great to see some built excitement! :D Right now, we don't have an official list of games, but a few we're learning toward include Smash Brothers, Halo, and maybe Marvel Vs. Capcom 3.

Thanks for showing interest! We're in the process of updating for this year's con, but last year's site might provide you with a similar idea.

Soul of the mind, key to life's ether...
Soul of the lost, withdrawn from its vessel...
Let strength be granted so the world might be mended...
So the world might be mended...

Well you can't have Marvel vs Capcom 3 without SF4 AE 2012, since that's actually a good game as oppose to the aforementioned games.

Went to UChi-con yesterday and had a pretty good time. There was karaoke! Yay!!! I got my undergraduate degree from U of C, so it's always a pleasure to visit campus again. I want to thank everyone who organized and worked the con. Here's a link to the pics I took with thanks to everyone who posed for me! :)

It was awesome for being a little free one day gig! Got to see old friends and made several new ones..and it was great for testing out new ACen cosplays.

It was a very simple convention, but I brought two first-timers to the con and they had a lot of fun. I'm definitely coming back next year.
I also rediscovered the magic of watching comedy anime with an audience. Why is everything so much funnier with an audience? Is that why sitcoms have laugh tracks?

If you were there, I was that girl in the blue sweater who was stalking the karaoke room but never singing. :3
