Just curious.

I was a Biology major...but then I switched over to Criminal Justice.

How about everyone else? What are your majors, and what made you choose them?

I chose Criminal Justice because I hate seeing the guilty walk free. I hate seeing innocent people being victimized everyday and the sorrow it brings to families that deal with on-going violence of society day to day.

Finished my associates a year or so back for Web Graphic Design, about to finish my bachelors in Multimedia Design & Development. I chose the web design path, mainly because it's a booming market and it has to do with computers. While i kind of wish I could go back and change it to linguiistics major, learning about different languages, it's kinda late when I am going to graduate in less than 2 months lol.

I'm in the pre-law direction, but my majors are Political Science, Psychology and Philospophy. I Want to be a lawyer, and despite Acen's hate for them XD I want to be able to stop or prevent bad people from doing bad things.

I graduated back in May with my associates' in graphic design. Originally, I wanted to get into early childhood education, and almost switched my major halfway through classes (mainly because of my frustrations with myself and lack of self-confidence), but because I started to get so sick, I figured graphic design was the "safer" choice for me compared to dealing with children, as much as I still would love to do so. I'm currently working on my Bachelor's of Science in Nursing--I'd like to be a trauma nurse. My goal is to become an Emergency/Trauma Nurse Practitioner (hello Grad school! :P). I want to be a nurse because I think the human body is one of the coolest things in the world, and as a nurse/NP you constantly learn new things on the job, and then best of all you get to help people and teach them how to improve their health and get them on the road to recovery. :D And when I was in the hospital recently I had an amazing nurse, who gave me even more inspiration to be a nurse--I want to be a great nurse like she was.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English (writing emphasis). It actually took me two years in college before I picked a major at all - when entering as a freshman at Illinois College, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do. I even watched a few of my friends go back and forth between majors, which told me I'd made the right decision. I did, however, consult with older schoolmates for advice. (IC's a nice hub for Education majors, for instance, but my friends who were in that major warned me how much work it would be, and how much patience I'd need.) When I transferred to Carroll in Wisconsin before my junior year, I decided on English since I enjoyed writing.

Turns out it was a good idea (despite my dad initially insisting it was a waste of time, money and effort). One thing English majors gain is good attention to detail. I also gained faster typing speeds. Now I work a clerical position in a law firm, and when working Dispatch at Acen, transcribing radio chatter is easy~ Take that, Dad.

That sounds awesome! And I'm glad things are well! I always dislike it when people assume that "you won't find a job with that major". That's not true, because you can do a lot with a college degree, no matter what!!!

Indeed. XD Plus, my favorite argument to use with Dad was this: "Dad, you've heard of Alan Greenspan, right? World-famous financial guru? Yeah, you know what his college major was? Music. And look what he's doing now."

To that end, I say choose something that you like, and don't let yourself be forced into taking a major that you don't want. Sure, some majors are more sought-after than others, but believe me - you can do a lot more with a major that you love, than one that you absolutely hate. I was told I should go for a Business major, and take all the Spanish classes I could. Well, I acquiesced on the Spanish - I won't say I'm fluent, but I can still speak some. But I steadfastly refused on the Business major. I had little to no interest in taking classes in that realm, and I'll be honest, I had no ambition in becoming a business leader. So I kept with the English major.

I still occasionally have people ask me what the point of that was, when I could be teaching now rather than working a clerical job. My response is easy: "I could, but I have a limited range of patience for teaching. I can train someone to do something, but I don't have the patience to be a teacher."

Wow, never thought I would hear myself say that. Especially after all the all-night programming sessions I had to do.

*probably the most boring one here*

For my undergrad, I got a BS in Accounting, then went for a Master's in Accounting, both at the U of M Twin Cities. Horridly run school, and job center is an absolute joke since they screwed up my resume several times over. Glad I'm now in the workforce.

IF I do decide to return to grad school, I'd be looking at a Masters of Business Taxation, and my first school of choice is UIUC.

Computer Science - but we don't have nearly enough "Internet" or web development classes. But I'm at the point where I can't learn too much more from classes that aren't focused on pretty advance subjects, and I haven't seen many of those on web topics...

(not quite in college yet, but will be applying in about a week...)
I originally wanted to major in Fine arts. Then I wanted to major in Linguistics. Now I want to double major in Criminology and Chinese/Japanese. My family keeps pushing for me to go into journalism....but that's not gonna happen, even if I am a decent writer.
I originally thought art because I love art, simple enough right? Then I decided I wanted to major in something that might be of more use (not to bash art...just speaking the truth), so I thought about languages. I've taken 3+ years of Japanese, and introductory lessons in both Mandarin and Korean...but I realized I needed something that could get me a job really quickly out of school. So then I chose Criminology with a minor or second major in a language. Hopefully I'll be able to work in Intelligence/Intelligence gathering/etc. work, or something related to that.
