So I just came from GenCon and had a blast playing in a Magic tournament. I read that ACen hosts several Magic tournaments, but I have never gone before. Judging by this year's gaming schedule on warhorn.net, it looks like there weren't many judges or players. Did these tournaments even take place this year? If so, how were they?

I am thinking about registering for them next year. I'm just wondering how the turnout usually is.

The events did indeed happen, and last year filled every seat.

I remember in 2008 there were something like 168 people for a booster draft...

I'm hoping we get a similar turnout this year.

I'm somewhat new to Magic (started somewhere around Scars or new Phyrexia) and have taken a liking to the commander/EDH format. Anything like that going down or do folks usually just do 60 card tournies and drafts?

Yes, lately it's been a Standard tourny, maybe a vintage one if we have time. Probably on Sunday we could do something. Then there's Vintage, which is my favorite. I think if we can get enough old school gamers, we could throw together a T1.

If anyone else has any more questions about MTG during the con, I will be happy to answer them. I will be running the Magic games for the Table Top Gaming section.

I play magic the get together really casually. I may bring some decks to play with so long as no one gets too hardcore over...legality and the like.

Kotomichi, doubt any real sanctioned event is going on with commander or EDH, but that doesn't mean you can't have a little event o your own during free play, or if we have down time.



Alkaren, haha I know exactly how you feel. These moxes I have don't do so well when it comes to the battle against the legal stuff. haha, but it's still fun. Bring your cards along, I'm sure someone will play with you, I know I will!

I'm down for some for-fun EDH/commander and can probably get at least another person who would be too. I've got some standard decks ready to go, nothing amazing but fun for casual games. Maybe I'll put a modern deck or so together for shits by then.

I got a straight up R/W beat down deck with humans and equipment which is pretty fast and my other deck is a R/B burn deck that uses lots of sacking but not nearly as efficient as the R/W deck. :-/

Here is my R/B deck. Might be slightly different now, but this is the basic idea. Don't have my other online anyplace.

Casual is where its at. (Vintage/Legacy as well) I will have all my decks with me and none of them are standard legal. There will.be a few of us floating around lookin for some nice casual play. (Prolly at the tables on the ground level.)

There is a free booster draft Saturday afternoon. If you hang around the bottom floor of the Hyatt, you'll find the magic players in the room just outside of video gaming. You should find a tournament schedule there. Usually, Sunday morning at around 4 AM, there is a reverse draft tournament. Also free.

If it was Sealed Deck instead that'd be awesome and I'd sign up on the spot. But I don't understand the draw to Draft style.

I'd rather play my already built decks, or have a set number of packs that I know I get to use the cards from instead of hoping I get lucky when the guy next to me passes me the pack.

There's actually very little luck... most of it is skill. Being able to pick the right cards are better than a preset, prebuilt deck. lol

It really determines who's the pro and who's the amateur.

I'm no good at drafting, don't get me wrong, I just know how to do it correctly.

I prefer casual games with pre-built decks. I'm still a beginner so you wouldn't find me doing any tourneys, but I like playing casually. I just need to get better at playing so I can stop relying on my boyfriend for help. lol

For tourneys, I like the style where you get six packs, a set of 3 from 2 different sets and you build a deck from that. That's more fair and it seems more fun. I watched my boyfriend play that during the Dark Ascension pre-release and it was really neat. If I were good enough, I'd do that for Avacyn Restored. The pre-release for that is ACen weekend so we'll miss part of ACen for it, which I don't mind at all. lol I'm hoping to get a booster box or the variety pack form SCG as a late birthday present since Avacyn Restored comes out two days after my birthday. <3 <3 <3

Played some epic EDH matches last night with some buddies of mine. T'was fun times indeed. I'm going to try put together some casual 60 card deck(s) tonight if I get unlazy enough to dig through my growing stack of cards. ;_;

Random roaming challenges? Sounds like a lot of fun there.

Not sure if I will fight the crowds of Yugioh players in the game rooms, but I will be around the hotel if people are lookin for a battle. As I mentioned in a previous post, most likely at the tables on the Ground level.

MTG should be in a different room. Especially during events.

I hope so, and yes I am all over some casual play. EDH, Planechase, Archenemy, massive free for alls team games. You name it, I am all for it casual style.

Okay, well I would like to try to take a survey, but it seems no one really uses the forums... at least not a substantial amount.

But yeah, I'm thinking some Pauper would be fun too. If we have left over packs at the end of the weekend, I would like to make a Cube Draft or something.
