I had that same problem switching from 1 to 2. Im still not happy with the combat system since I like being a tank and have no powers whatsoever. And in 2 they took alot of that away. Even though I've done nothing but boost my health and armor it still only takes a few shots before I lose my shields and health. But then again maybe it'll be better for me when I playthrough again as a biotic. *shrug* I do hope that they go back to unlimted ammo in 3 though. I hate having my sniper rifle run out of ammo before a big fight.

Mass Effect 2 was intended to be more of a shooter than an RPG. The constant use of cover to regenerate and the emphasis on critical hits (headshots) really gives it away.
Is the system more accessible to people? For sure. I love the fast-paced action intertwined with some RPG elements. The Thermal Clip system is far more intuitive than the "your gun has to recharge bullets nao lol" hiccup that always seemed to get me killed in ME1. It forces players to moderate their shots and not only make them count, but to use all weapons available to that class (excluding the Soldier, as they just have too many guns to realistically run out of ammo).
There isn't really a tank or healer role, which I hope doesn't change. I don't want a 3PS/RPG to feel like an MMO.
The main story is a tad shallow, yes, but to really flesh it out and make the most of it, your support characters' missions must be completed. It reveals so much more of the interpersonal dynamics between party members and Shepard. I hope they can keep the best of both worlds for ME3--a strong plot element while retaining the characterization and personal missions of ME2.
Things I hope change:
The element gathering system (confirmed overhaul)
Less arena-type gunfight areas
More about the Reapers
More about Cerberus
Rachni presence, since I saved their dumbass species.
