Honestly the best way is just to dive right in. Get your friends together that are interested in playing and head down to the local book store and pick yourself up a Dungeon Master Guide, a Player's Handbook, and if you can a Monster Manual as well. The version that most places carry these days is 4th Edition which is the newest. I haven't really played that version but from what I've heard it's quite user friendly.

You will also need a full set of dice per person and the ability to make copies of character sheets.
Within the guides they will explain rules, how to DM/be a player and also have some sample scenarios that the players can go through and eventually the DM will be able to create his own world and the players will be able to make some really cool in depth characters. Just keep in mind that the more you imagine and get into the world/characters the more fun you will have. =)

p.s. once you and your friends become more experienced concider buying some of the other books they offer and though they aren't completely necessary (in my opinion) miniatures will help in battle sequences and strategies.

Come to Anime Central. We'll be running events that are perfect for new players to D&D.

We'll also have dice available to be loaned out, and software to make a character with.

It's really the easiest way to learn 4th Edition D&D which is a pretty easy game system to learn.

If afterwards you don't find it to your liking, there will be lots of other RPGs for you to try out as well.

D&D supplies cost money, yes. But if There's a D&D game to be played at Acen, (DON'T QUOTE ME ON THIS) I do believe it'll will be free. I've got two games right now, and I'd love to join an Acen Adventure. I play 3.5 though, and 4's rules are a bit different, and I don't feel like buying new books.
See me you may,
See me you not.
But see me you wont,

This is correct. D&D to play at Acen is free. And there will be several vendors selling everything you would need if you find it fun and want to keep playing.

Truthfully these days the best way to play D&D is to not buy most of the books.

To Play 4e what you need as a player is
1. The Rules Compendium (soft back book about $20)
2. Dice
3. Either a DDI subscription ($75/year) or other software method to make characters and a way to get updates to that data. Or the Essentials line of books. Granted there are a pile of other books you can use to make characters too, but the Essentials seem to give the biggest bang for the buck.

To DM you'd need a few more books, monster manuals, and the various Dungeon Master Guides.

Well when it comes to time you have basically two choices.

We run RPGs in the following time slots
Friday 1p-5p, 6p-10p
Saturday 8a-12p,1p-5p,6p-10p
Sunday 8a-12p,1p-5p

We're also running what WotC calls Dungeon Delves pretty much all day, they take 1 hour to play and are fun if you just like combat.

Our RPG schedule is on the warhorn site

I might stop by if time allows. I've been playing D&D since 2nd edition.

I normally don't do pre-generated characters cause it's hard to capture the insanity of my play style, but I might make an exception for the epicness of the ACen crowd.

Most of the RPG stuff we do isn't pre-genned at all. There are rules to follow to be LFR compliant, but they're pretty straightforward.

We have pre-gens for LFR if you show up and want to play right away and not make one, but you can always then customize the characters at a later time.

The same is true for Shadowrun and Pathfinder as well.

However, the only games where you have to play with the pre-gens are the Call of Cthulhu (Anime Central Cthulhu game) and Paranoia (and those are only strong maybes)... in the case of the Cthulhu game, that's because the characters are Stereotypes of Acen Staff and you play the role of them trying to stop the dark ones from fulfilling their contract with the convention and consuming everybody and everything in it.

It's quite a lot of fun from what I've been told. It started several years ago when to eventually become Con chair started it. We've been running it for a couple years now, and I hope that it will be a long running staple of Acen's TTG department.

Rooms!

This year except for the International Ballroom where Video Gaming is and Malpensa where Children's programming is, we've got pretty much every room in the basement of the Hyatt.

That means
CCGs = London & Narita (nights) (and the Hilton on Saturday)
RPGs = Paris, Vienna, Florence (except for the Settlers of Cataan Qualifier tournament)
TTGs = Davinci
Go = Narita (daytimes)
Miniature War Games = Heathrow

Came in twice during the weekend. Played D&D 4E game for an hour with fellows who never played 4E before, yet this was a little different in that it was Essentials...I think. Was a fun retreat from playing D&D with people I know, and good to see how others play in comparison to me. Next day wasn't so grand, in that I was told the 3.5 DM never even showed. A shame too, because that was the game I was looking forward to the most. I hope he's okay, whoever he is, and let it be known he was missed especially. Will need to try at another time I suppose.

I'm glad you had a good time! If you played for an hour, that was likely the D&D Dungeon Delve. All the pre-gens this year were indeed Essentials, both for Living Forgotten Realms, and the D&D Dungeon Delve.

I'm sorry that the D&D 3.5 event didn't work out for you. I have the email address for the judge and will try to work out what happened. I have heard he was indeed at the convention so it is entirely possible the RPG room staff just completely missed him. In any case I'll let him know that there was quite a bit of interest in his events that went unfulfilled.

So there were Living games going round? That's a whole other level of play I've yet to try, and would be interested in trying as well. Seeing as each year I participate in a little something more, I may even bring in my own D&D material for play next time around. Plenty of time to wonder on it, that is for sure. 3.5!!! B)

This was our third year running Living games at a serious level.

We had lower turnout for LFR than normal, but overall we had a pretty high RPG turnout.

2 ShadowRun Missions tables most of the weekend, 2-3 Pathfinder, 1-2 Gamma World and 3-5 D&D based on my rough count.
