As of May 31st, Tokyopop is shutting down its publishing arm in the US.

Seems like to many unsuccessful ventures has finally bought Tokyopop down.
My tongue moved, a swung relaxing hinge.
I said to her, 'What will become of us?'
And as forgotten water in a well might shake
At an explosion under morning

Or a crack run up a gable,
She began to speak.
'I think our very form is bound to change.
Dogs in siege. Saurian relapses. Pismires."

Wow really?

I used to read tons of manga by these guys.

Besides Viz and Yen plus there isn't a lot of manga publishers here in the USA :(

:( I actually enjoyed some of their series. That's a darn shame. I might rustle on down to the Borders that isn't gone out of business just yet and get some titles for 50%+ off.

I'm saddened by the fact that this finally puts to rest any hopes of the later Full Metal Panic novels getting released here in the US. Can't see anyone trying to wrestle its rights away from Tokyopop.

Some of the more popular titles might get picked up by Del Rey, Dark Horse, or Viz depending. This is really depressing

Damn it, these companies need to stop failing right when they're one book away from finishing a series I've been collecting for years D<

First CPM with World of Narue, then ADV with Gunslinger Girls, now Tokyopop with Yubisaki Milk Tea.

I WANT MY CLOSURE D:

( World of Narue was actually not one book away from finishing but still, an awesome cute manga series <3 )

Nevermind the fact that Tokyopop picked up Mirai Mikki...and here I was looking forward to seeing how they pulled off the series.

Hopefully it gets picked up by someone else...

Not really surprising it mostly has been a question of when since 2009 when Kodansha USA took over Del Ray Manga. With out a major Japanese publisher Tokyopop had a very steep hill to climb to stay afloat.

I can't see anyone willing to buy the rights for the FMP novels off of Tokyopop when even Tokyopop didn't even seem to care to finish the series.

Odds are their rights will lapse without them picking them back up. Otherwise since Tokyopop is obviously in a bad way financially, they'd likely be more willing to entertain offers on properties they still maintain. Afterall, the licenses are worth nothing to them if they can't turn around and publish books to make money off of the license, but they can get some money by selling the license. As for another company's willingness to buy the license from Tokyopop, I would think that depends on how well they are entrenched and what kind of success they may or may not be having with their own novel titles.

Anyway, if for nothing else other than nostalgia this is a sad time. ;3;

I can only see another company trying to get the FMP novels' rights with pocket change and possibly a fancy dinner. The novels already released sold very poorly.

True, but that doesn't mean there's no way they can't make some model work. Previously if we wanted a book, we pretty much had to go to a Borders or a B&N and pick one up, otherwise order a physical copy online. At this point however we have apps on phones and tablet PCs as well as dedicated e-readers like the Kindle and Nook that could be used as new avenues for the novels. Comparitively speaking, you're going to get a lot more bang for your buck via digital distribution than you would via physical media, and that alone could make it more promising.

I understand, but still... I blame their poor taste in certain titles, not fallowing through on other titles, poor marketing & people downloading content. I could go on...still...! T_T

That means all the blu yaoi titles are gone too... So Junjo and Sex Pistols would have to be picked up by someone else and with 12 Junjo's out already I kind of don't see that happening. Its depressing.

This is sad, but not terribly surprising. No one hardly buys manga these days. They read scanlations online. And TokyoPop was never the best at translating their stuff to begin with, so I'm not surprised they're the first to go under.

I never expected them to go down. It's so weird when my bookshelf is almost all Tokyopop. They had some decent American titles under their name too. What a shame.

Tokyopop is ceasing its publication business in the US, but Borders is going under a restructuring plan. Think Blockbuster - not dead, but certainly on life support.
