I know, right? Two friends I game with kept bugging me about it, so I decided to watch "just one episode." That was before I knew it was impossible to watch just one episode of MLP.

Right after I got done watching most of season one, one of my friends started giving me hell about "Welcome to the herd!" I told him I wasn't a brony until I started buying MLP minis, writing fanfiction, and drawing ponies.

Well...guess what...

I feel like I should have posted in this thread many moons ago.

I personally feel like they really half assed all the Japanese dubs so far. Some of the words and feelings just don't match up correctly. The OP and ED also really, really bother me. Mainly because they are the kawaii desu ne boyfriend love songs. I just feel like they could have found songs specifically about friendship or just kept the English OP and had a Japanese ED.

I also feel like they could have dressed up the characters voices more. Like giving AJ an Osaka accent, which is pretty much our equivalent of southern drawl. And Rarity. They could have given her a hoity toity forms of words to use. And they missed out on that. Pinkie also sounds really, really strange in Japanese. Her Giggle at the Ghosties did not match the overall tone of the English vers at all.

All in all, I am totally not that impressed with the Japanese version of the show.

Yes they have. I was also told to watch the new MLP and I am hooked.

Makes me wonder if they feel as strongly about their shows that end up being changed over here.

No I meant everything. I'm either the sane one or the crazy one about this fad, and each day I think the line gets blurrier.

Not much to explain; A lot of people like it for it's decent humor and simple charm, though it's not really for everyone. Same as any other fandom really.

That's what got me into it. It's a very well-written show; the humor is a lot like Chuck Jones at his best. The characters are surprisingly complex, and it's just fun to watch. Strangely enough, anime-wise, I'd compare it to the simple charm and humor of Azumanga Daioh.

For me, it's also come along at the right time: I haven't found any really good anime to watch lately, since HOTD (though Baka and Test is about at that level), so MLP fills the "I've got an hour to kill and wanna watch something funny" niche nicely. I honestly have not liked a series this much since HOTD and Inu-Yasha.

I just watched a few episodes today and...it kind of reminds me of the Tinkerbell movies. Lol.
Not a bad thing - I like the Tinkerbell movies! It's great to see that they can put a moral in a fun show that kids will be glad to watch and might even learn from. We need more shows like that now a days.

I don't have a favorite character but I do lean more towards Applejack than any of the others. I like how straightforward, hardworking and honest she is. Plus, she seems like the only one to have a posse. lol

Applejack is pretty underrated in my opinion. Some of the later episodes that focus on her are some of the best in the show. Though I still have to give it to Rarity for being Best Pony.

Care to explain what you mean by this?

I like a show. I don't require that everyone else like it. I'm not pandering to anyone, and if MLP panders to its fans, well--it's the highest rated Hasbro sponsored show ever. Considering the appeal that GI Joe and Transformers has to Generation X, that says something. Apparently the pandering works.

If someone else doesn't like it, well, that's their business.

To be fair, Bronies has been bred from online communities like Reddit and MyLittleBrony.com/Memebase.com (I find nothing wrong with that) but Hasbro has done little pandering to that demographic (no more Derpy, Alicorn Twilight, etc).

So...like about 75% of anime, then.

Just about every harem anime robs shamelessly from Tenchi. Mecha shows steal from Gundam. Evangelion so robbed from other anime shows that there's a whole chapter devoted to "how Gainax ripped off everyone" in one of my history of anime books. (Shinji's an expy of Nadia, the battery power countdown is Ultraman, the whole damn genre steals from Tetsujin 28go, I can keep going.) Finding an original anime these days is difficult. It's self-referential as hell. Of the last 20 or so anime series I've watched, none of them showed much in originality. Doesn't mean I didn't find them enjoyable. I love HOTD because it's basically an animated version of a good Romero zombie flick, before Romero started to suck.

I'm a guy of a certain age who's liked cartoons longer than many ACen posters have been alive. That doesn't make me better or smarter than anyone else, but it does make me fairly jaded towards cartoons and anime. I went into watching MLP not expecting to like it at all. I was drawn into the series for one reason: I found it funny as hell. I watch shows for entertainment, not to feel edgy or to analyze it. MLP is a cute, harmless cartoon, and I don't really give a categorical damn if it's not "creative" or "original." It makes me giggle, and that's all I require if I'm in the mood for a good laugh. Given that I was bedridden with pneumonia when I started MLP, trust me, a laugh is what I desperately needed.

I'm terribly sorry that you don't like MLP, Kirby, but as far as I'm concerned, that's your business and none of mine. I think I'm more sorry that you've got nothing to do but get on a topic started by fans of the show and look down your nose at us for not liking the same things you do.

Mother of Celestia, it's a effing cartoon with talking ponies, Blazing Saddles references, magic, and barfing dragons. It's not something to get worked up about if a lot of people like it.

Me defending why I like a certain cartoon, and why I'm tired of people trying to run it down because they don't like it?

It's a cartoon. It doesn't affect life. Too many people on this board get worked up because the a portion of the human race either likes a cartoon/anime they hate, or dislikes a cartoon/anime they love.

Can't watch pony videos at work. My students think I'm nuts enough as it is. (I tell them that when college profs go around the bend, they usually turn to drinking. Anime is easier on the liver, though more expensive.)

On second blush (and reading through the rest of the posts), I do see some of Kirby's points. MLP has taken over the internet and can get pretty annoying if you're not a fan. I would argue the same is true for other internet memes and popular things, though--I don't think Grumpy Cat is all that funny and I never saw the appeal of Homestar Runner. Heaven knows that there are some pretty scary bronies out there too...it'll be a cold day in hell before I get a tattoo of Rainbow Dash's cutie mark, for instance, and if I was in the US Army, I wouldn't risk my career by altering my uniform and wearing it to a Bronycon. And we're not even talking about Rule 34 crap (thanks, Bing, for reminding me to turn on SafeSearch when looking for Applejack) or some freak suing so he can marry Twilight Sparkle.

I do also see the point that ACen is worried about being overrun by bronies. I still think we should expand the fandom, as it were--ComicCon isn't all about comics anymore, and E3 isn't just about video game development--but I do understand the reasoning.

Then again, ten years ago, we were all going nuts over Tenchi Muyo, or Pokemon, or Eva...

What in the Killing in the Name of God is what I'd go with.

Too many people on this board get worked up because the a portion of the human race either likes a cartoon/anime they hate, or dislikes a cartoon/anime they love.

So essentially removing a huge point of a forum board.

You also bring up that other anime rips off other anime. Well guess who hasn't watched a single new series in a few years? I also haven't gone out of my way to watch TV since I took a trip to Denver last week, so cable/satellite TV is out of my caring, as is Netflix. Because in my opinion TV has become death.

I have nothing to do you say? Quite true, since it's the off-season and I have to keep my wits sharp. I've spent a lot of my time on /pol/ recently so that's how I've been getting most of my laughs. Any who, about this whole cartoon horse thing; some day soon it will start to fade. I gave the show a quick watch and much to your chagrin, I thought it was wholesome. A problem being I am not one to be part of a mass like the brony/pegasister fad, and probably never will be, thank Dog. That's not my style. I don't think it will have much more lasting power,

Sad to hear you had a bout with pneumonia, and glad you found something that made you feel better. But you think I can find something for my depression? Something or someone that challenges my way of thinking or makes me see something differently? Maybe that will be my version of My Little Pony, except it will last a lot longer than this whole fad will.

I think ponies will last longer than you think...and honestly it's so insanely popular there's really no way to avoid it these days.

I wouldn't get a tattoo of a cutie mark either, though raindbow dash's would be up there if I were..but mainly because I like the way it looks.

I'm not sure /pol/ is where I would go however to keep my wits sharp. But right there with understanding how a lot of people are in regards to this fandom. I hated ponies..

I detested and loathed everything about ponies. But then I eventually watched the show, and I really liked it. The music is really good, the characters are amusing and I like the writing. Sometimes I roll my eyes some at it, but it's all good.

I can't nor will deny it is popular, but I still think it's a fad. It's how American culture is; no other nation on Earth washes their hands of cultural icons like we do. We'll still have the die hards, but one day we'll get a new craze everyone will jump on. It's the cycle of consumerism. Personally, I just got really tired of going onto a server or game and hearing nothing but "So and so is best pony" and "This villain is crap, this one was better." I just want to enjoy my killing spree as much as the next guy.

I can't tell people what to like, but I can make fun of things, too. I'm of a nature where I've become a dickbutt and being mean in a jesting way is how I get my kicks a lot. I kick myself and my buds as much as I kick the fandom. Long as you aren't singing and dancing round me, I'm usually okay then. It's not that I hate it itself, I hate the degree to which it can get to. The whole "watching the show is manly" mantra is bunk. Lines between masculinity and femininity was blurred long before this show was revived. The Love and Tolerance crap got old real fast too.

Make no mistake, it's not as annoying as it used to be, but sometimes it reaches it's finger near the threshold.

I just wanted to weight in. MLP is just like every other show out there; some love it, some hate it, some tolerate it. I can remember in high school when DBZ was defended and Sailor Moon was described as "stupid" and I could have made the reverse argument. I don't expect everyone to love the show or any dub version that is out there. I like what has been done with translating it into Japanese and you have got to remember that some things just won't translate over well for culture or language reasons, just like when we get anime in English there are things "lost" in an attempt to make it more "western". So you don't like it, you don't like it, but that's no reason to get upset with people that do enjoy it. So maybe things ought to be a little calmer and lets not be so quick to judge about what others like.

I think it's kind of funny that a lot of the people I know(and probably a number of people in this thread) that complain about ponies being everywhere and getting into everything are big Doctor Who fans, which is arguably the most vocal, rabid, inject-it-in-to-everything-and-refuse-to-shut-up-about-it fandom of all time. Seems kind of hypocritical to me.

ANYWAY... Back to ponies.

I wasn't playing the sympathy card, Kirby. I really was down with pneumonia at the time. When you feel like hell, laughter is the best medicine sometimes. Along with cold medicine, which probably made that episode with Pinkie Pie a lot weirder than it was.

If I wanted to play the sympathy card, I would've told a sad tale about how depression was driving me to suicide, but all it took to pull me back from the brink of eating a grenade was watching Twilight Sparkle learn about friendship.

But that would be a lie. When I get depressed, I watch Evangelion.

Honestly, I will never understand the people complaining about the references that are a nod to the fanbase that happened in season 2. They weren't blatant or obtrusive, and honestly they were vague enough to not be read that way. Some of the things that people insisted were internet meme references were small and vague enough that they really didn't have to be. For instance, I know people thought the "checklist within a checklist" thing in Lesson Zero was a reference to the "Yo dawg, I hear you like ____, so I put ____ in your ____" meme, and sure, it could've been, but it might not have been, too, and it was funny regardless. Also who cares if a background pony or two gets popular with the fanbase and starts showing up more because of it? Why is it a bad thing to have a random pony that isn't important show up on the side more often than she (or he) would've if the fans didn't like her (or him) a lot? What is it hurting?

This is still a cute and well written show for little girls. Nods to the adult fanbase does not make it not for little girls anymore, so it hurts nothing.
