Boy refuses to fight girl in Iowa wrestling tournament.

Personally I lean towards the latter. It certainly sounds like this girl has earned her place at the tournament, so there's really no excuse for pulling out. It's not like she (and the other girl who earned her way into the tourney) doesn't realize that she can get hurt in wrestling, yet she's willing to go through it anyway. Quite frankly it's disrespectful to the capabilities of women, and I think it does put a damper on the fact that this was how we have seen the first girl's victory at Iowa's state wrestling tournament.

Well he could have Sanji syndrome, but I think it would be his pride if he lost to a girl. lol

^ This.

If I were her, I'd be pissed, though. I'm really not a feminist AT ALL, but someone
refusing to even challenge me because I was a girl IN A WRESTLING TOURNAMENT? Yeah,
that would irritate me a little bit, and I'd want to punch his lights out. And then
beat the next kid that was my opponent.

Edit: The "this" wasn't meant for Xeno, but Rukariou... but I think I'll leave it,
because Sanji vs. Kalifa was the first thought that came to my mind, too. XDDD

At first I thought it was chivalrous from what I read at the beginning. But until I read Iowa has allowed girl wrestlers for over two decades, I saw it as sexist. She's there to compete and it should not matter the gender. Is his pride that high he doesn't want to say he was beat by a girl? I think it would have been chivalrous to have fought her, and if he lost and took it as a lost he would truly be a man. What a shame. He could have been famous whether he won or lost to her.

Well I did say the same thing for the most part. lol XD haha

Also to look on his side of things...if the worse did come by and he DID injure her, I'd only imagine that being a huge event and the guy would be ridiculed.

But I seriously think he was just scared to lose to a girl. lol

I think that it's likely that in his mind, he was in a lose-lose situation.

1. Wrestle the girl and get beat by her and be made fun of for having lost to a girl
2. Wrestle the girl and beat her and be made fun of for having to wrestle her in the first place and being too rough

I don't really like what he did, though. If this girl qualified for state, doesn't that mean she KNOWS the risks involved with the sport? And that should also mean she's GOOD, so she is less likely to be hurt.

Srsly, boy. Wrestle the girl.

(Or maybe he had a crush on her. o.O *thinking stupid things now*)

I was in wrestling in HS & numerous schools we faced had girls on the team. Every last girl we faced won their matches & not because our wrestlers went easy on them.

There's no shame in losing to somebody who practiced as hard or harder than you, it doesn't matter if it's a guy or a girl. That's the same words I told my friend when he went against the first girl our team faced & words that followed the team even after I quit wrestling my Jr. year to focus on my studies.

In fact more often than not, we were asking those girls for tips after the matches

I..honestly think it's a little bit of both.

I know all my life, my dad had brought my up never to hit women...but I think that's more of a 'never abuse your spouse' type of thing, not that you shouldn't hit a women. It's still difficult though.

I guess it's lucky I don't wrestle random women on the side of the street. XD

Seen this on yahoo (ha ha keep finding articles on there.)

I don't think it's neither; some guys just don't like fighting or dealing with girls in any situation. He said it was against his religious morals from what I read on the yahoo version.

It's like me; I don't hit men below the belt just because 'I'm a girl and I can get away with it and men are pigs and deserve it' it's more like 'I'm not bias towards anyone and I respect both sexes and feel this is pretty immoral on it's own.' He probably didn't want to fight a girl because it was against his moral values not just because she was a girl. He didn't really want to offend her unless you read his mind.

I don't know I'm kinda I don't care but it doesn't mean I like it attitude towards double standard sexism because it's a moot point for people to change their minds but I seem to hate anything that deals with religion or race in general due to stereotypes

I found this funny that a lot of people were like 'omg ROAR,' and went towards one way or the other instead of being netural XD

btw Iowa is kinda....backwater in certain parts from what I been to. o.O So that makes even more sense.

*found the whole thread kinda interesting so far*

Not a real issue. Wrestling is as much technique as it is strength, and since girls have been wrestling for decades, it's like complaining that rain is wet. It makes no difference how much drama people want to raise because it won't change things.

How is that chivalrous at all? If so then your definition of chivalry is sexist. If your definition of chivalry is not fighting a girl because girls are too fragile to hold their own, then that is sexist.

Honestly, I know all know why the guy didn't do it. We've all been to high school I think. High school is brutal. If he knew that girl was good and might lose, well he doesn't want the humiliation that would never end after that. Now is that a proper reason? Hell no and ideally I'd like to think we could all look past that and were that enlightened even in high school, but we're not. So I don't necessarily fault the kid for doing it, but I certainly can't agree with it.

He may have had actual religious reasons for not doing so, folks. If that's the reason, then it's neither chivalrous nor sexist. If he's using that as an excuse, then he's just a coward.

Me, I would never wrestle with a woman. Not because of chivalry or sexism, but survival.

he cited religion as part of the reason for not participating, but..what religion is he?? it's definitely not what i would consider chivalry because of the inherent condescension that goes along with saying, 'i won't wrestle you because i might hurt you.'

high school wrestling is NOT an especially violent or dangerous sport.
i though it was a funny joke, but people are actually assuming he would have lost the bout?? the least sexist thing he could have done was go all out and try to pound her into the mat as if she were the burliest-looking guy, because that would have shown respect for her as a worthy opponent.

a modern definition of chivalry is kind of hard to come up with considering treating a women any special way that could possibly denote weakness is construed as sexist; by our common, modern societal standards, chivalry overall is sexist, isn't it? that being said, i think chivalry has more to do with being especially polite and gentlemanly to women, not going out of your way to not do any harm them at all cost. a real gentlemen would pile drive a lady if she threw a drink in his girlfriend's face or something, wouldn't he?

i wonder what would happen if there was this super-strong female character beating nami or robin to death in front of sanji, and he was the only person around to do anything about it. =\

Guess I'm an exception cause if a guy is like this I would want to marry him<3 I thought Chivalry was this and not really sexist; manly that it was due to standard old time ideals. Like back then women's mindsets as well as men went hand in hand compared to today so people don't realize that a lot.

I say this because a lot of women complain how men are sexist horny driven pigs who only use women for babies and cooking  Or that men are not 'emotional enough,' and are designed to cheat in any situation.

To be honest, I think Nami would have/should have lost against both Doublefinger AND Kalifa.
A number agent of Baroque Works AND a secret government agent should be more than enough to
take down some cowardly girl with a weapon she's still learning how to use. /rant

But that's neither here nor there. I agree with you, though. You'd have to have a quick
ethical battle in your head, but in the end, protecting your loved ones far outweighs the
risk of shaming yourself by not upholding your own morals. :/ At least I think so.

i agree, although i honestly think/wish nami had won by being more a baddarse, and..and..and just kicking
doublefinger's arse or something!! whenever nami has to do anything involving violence i start rolling my eyes and thinking, 'come on, oda..you're a way better writer than this and you know it! this is PURE amateur hour stuff!'
at least--i think--from now on nami will be completely capable after the two years of intensive weather study or whatever. if even fluffy, plush chopper can hold his own without breaking a sweat now, the days of anyone in the group shouting, fumbling around, and crying their heads off in fear during a fight is probably over.

i still want to know which religion in iowa forbids a male wrestling a female--sanjinism?

There are some pretty strict Anabaptist sects that would find wrestling women to be abhorrent; there's certain Christian sects who find dancing with a member of the opposite sex to be wrong and sinful.

I'm not sure how Islam would feel about this either, though I'm doubting that's the case here.

I'd say neither. If he may have felt he'd be to distracted by the fact she was girl. He probably felt that could lead to him making mistakes, or be worried about where it was appropriate to touch her. Thus where the religious part of it probably came from.

And TekoMuto here put it probably best, He probably felt that wrestling a girl would feel to intimate.

I think the only reason girls have to wrestle boys in this situation is because there isn't enough girls into the sport.

I mean it's a timeless issue, gender is just distracting.

Eh. He was mature and didn't fuss about it. He didn't cause a scene. He didn't get all flustered and yell, "I'm not wrestling a girl. Girls aren't allowed to wrestle." He chose to not wrestle a girl and who are we to judge? He didn't say that girls can't wrestle or shouldn't be allowed to. He himself did not want to because of his faith. There are so many controversial things out there and this is something small, at least to me. I don't see this as a big deal and people who are making it out to be should just get over it.

In Judaism, at weddings at least, women and men cannot dance with each other and are in separate areas. Luckily my boyfriend wasn't invited so I wasn't really disappointed. I just conversed with my family and ignored the other 400+ people that I didn't know. XD Yes, there were about 400 or so people at the wedding. >>

Also in Judaism, women and men who are dating are not allowed to touch each other, meaning no holding hands, no hugging, no kissing and they aren't allowed to be alone together unless they are in a public place like a restaurant.

@Prayer Police: I prefer Yan Yan over Pocky as well. lol

Ladies ladies ladies, if you find a man whose only concern about a woman is her breast size, he just may be dumb enough to believe you if you say you have Ds when you have Bs.
