As most of you all know, certain Borders stores will be closing due to poor sales, and changing times such as Amazon's Kindle and their super low deals on books. I know the one by me is closing and that's on west 95th street. Don't get me wrong on this, I loved Borders a long time ago when I was a student in college, but I see their prices sometimes as being too high. I do a price check scan on amazon and I can get that exact book used for $4. With some of these stores closing, I suggest we take advantage of the out of business sales they will be having. They were the only store that had a decent amount of Manga. So whats your take on Borders?

This really is unfortunate. . . There are three Borders within 40 minutes of my house, and TWO of them are being shut down. There's the one in Southlake Mall in NW Indiana, and then there's the one on the other side of my town in Matteson, IL. The Matteson one is where I went to the midnight release party for Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. :(

This makes me sad, mainly because I used to get my mangos at a Borders back in the day. They'd always get new releases on time versus Barnes and Noble.

Though it does not surprise since we can all agree that they are fairly expensive, but i can't stand reading on the computer or via a kindle, I like a big fat book in my hands.

I think it's sad to see any book store close.

As an avid book reader, and lover it really is painful.
And while the new e-readers are nice and I did get one for my hubby (so he can use it at work) I don't want one at all. I will always be old fashioned and want to read real books printed on paper.

I'm sad too. I loved Borders. And the one on 95th is near me. T____T Borders has a good supply of manga so I liked going to them a lot. I better be getting there soon. I'm always up for saving money.

I feel bad for all the people that are about to lose there jobs. Just like when a bunch of my friends lost their jobs at Circuit City.

One thing to keep in mind about store closings, is that the prices you will see are non negotiable. Those prices are set by the person overseeing the store closure. All the good stuff will be gone quickly so act sooner rather then later

I will be going to the one by Randhurst since that one is the closest to me, but from what I have heard they won't be having any liquidation sales so I won't be surprised if I see little to no "[insert high percent here] off books!!!" signs.

My boyfriend usually got a 40% coupon nearly every week so it was great when we wanted to get manga. lol Maybe I will have him stop by and see if any DC comics and manga are on sale since I have to leave for work soon.

Indeed. They may not be "liquidating inventory". One of my good friends from 4th grade is losing her job because of this. She says her store out here isn't having any clearance or closeout sales. If there's a surplus of inventory, that's likely the only thing they'll liquidate, but other stuff they'll truck out to other stores to keep the inventory at a "making money" type of price.

; x ; It is quite very upsetting!! Borders was where I spent 90% of my highschool years... Then again, I didn't help the cause seeing as how I'd sit there all day reading leisurely or for school... never buying anything.... but aiyaaaah!! Their selection never let me down!! Ever.. Where will I go for midnight release parties now!? TT___TT Guess I better go get some books and manga before its too late.. So sad!!

Ours seems to be staying open for the time being. Though they may still close stores. Expect sales on things like their sets (not games) and maybe some of the paperchase and godiva products. Other than that they probably wont do much.

Well if they're trying to liquidate the stock of the closing stores (which it sounds like they are - though I could be mistaken) they have no choice but to try to empty their stock as much as possible regardless of how much of a loss they take (i.e. sell everything even if they're almost giving it away). Obviously the sales wouldn't start out that great and would get higher as time goes along, but the stock also goes down as time passes. I remember playing that game when my Walden closed down.

That is sad. Borders always seemed to have the better manga selection, but there aren't any near me, only Barnes & Noble.

Borders on Michigan Ave. closed too but the one on State street downtown is still open.

I been to Borders since I was in high school...no grammar school and used the one on michigan for years until it closed so I was kinda...upset. I got all my old ranma one half and peach girl books from there!

I really wanted cheapo manga when it was closing but the cheapest I could get was 5 bucks and even then it was certain volumes XB oh well.

Amazon is online; most stuff online=cheaper than irl  You c an get a mp3 player for 8 dollars online compared to in stores! I couldn't find one under 20 bucks.

Kinda bummed out because it means I have to use state street which is a crapshoot since they barely have stuff or the one on Belmont which is far and a walk....

Or B and N; which doesn't have Korean manga <_< But they do have Yen plus.....

I'm one of the employees that works, and has worked at the Southlake Borders since we opened. It's really sad that I have to see my beautiful store empty TWICE, and I cried yesterday morning when I found out. We were all hoping that it wasn't one of the ones closing, since we did just open back in the fall of 06... but alas, it was not to be. (BTW if anyone can get me in anywhere in this area, I really need another job soon here... )

Not really surprised to see this happening. I pretty much assumed that the heads of Borders had no idea how to combat declining sales after their knee-jerk reaction in closing most Waldenbooks.

I'm not effected by this to much right now as I get most of my books from a Barnes and Noble.
My tongue moved, a swung relaxing hinge.
I said to her, 'What will become of us?'
And as forgotten water in a well might shake
At an explosion under morning

Or a crack run up a gable,
She began to speak.
'I think our very form is bound to change.
Dogs in siege. Saurian relapses. Pismires."

- from Seamus Heaney's "Sibyl", part two of "Triptych"

Everything considered, we've had quite a few CEOs since I started back in 06. Three or four, I think? Every time something new would come down from corporate, we'd all be rolling our eyes about it. The company has been top heavy with non-book people for years, it was only a matter of time before they would have to file. We've gone through tons of crap - we had 'make books' the fall before this past one here, and since this past September they'd been on our backs to sell BR+ cards to the extreme - the DMs were calling every hour or so and yelling over the phone to the managers, threatening them like crazy. I could hear it from 20+ feet away when I was on breaks. Pathetic.

Haha, feels great to be saying this stuff now, considering the liquidators own my store from here on out!

This sucks, the Borders near me will be closing down. =[ There's still a Barnes & Noble here, but they never had as much of a selection of manga, at least when I used to shop there.

I'd read that said CEOs had zero bookselling experience previous to taking the post atop Borders. You really have to wonder who thought that was a bright idea. I mean they couldn't have head-hunted someone lower on the totem pole on from a company like, oh, say B&N or Amazon? Y'know, people who might have an idea on how to succeed in this particular business? Or at least has some modicum of knowledge on how to reach the book-buying public? Just a thought. The only reason I could see not pursuing that avenue is if B&N / Amazon make their employees sign no-compete contracts, but even then those are typically of limited length.

holy crap you do work RETAIL XD

Reminds me of when I had to sell BR cards at Banana republic  It's worse there since apparently sales and some sales support get credit from it but not stock even though we had to help sell them despite it not being part of our department.

Hyde Park Borders was that place to be in high school. All you'd ever see are kids in the cafe area. My friends and I spent a good amount of vacation time just hanging around drinking hot cocoa there. It's sad, but it's like losing any other childhood place. You eventually get over it.
