Dark Cloud 2 for PS2. Pretty freakin huge RPG, that went fairly under rated.

I loved this game. It had its nice little charm.
My tongue moved, a swung relaxing hinge.

Since Nier is still relatively obscure (thanks to all those reviews hammering it over its flaws which are heavily outweighed by its virtues) I'm gonna have to plug Nier all up in this mofo, too.

I'm going to look it up; if it's vaporwear that's even cooler!

Puyo Puyo I forgot to mention as well as Madou series in general: Some people outside of Japan know about it but they only released Puyo Puyo everyone (the GBA cart,) as well as a few rip offs like DR. robotnick mean bean machine and Kirby version. It's kinda popular in Japan like Vocaloid but it's rare when it comes to fans: I don't know anyone who cosplay any character or even heard of the puzzle game besides puyo nexus.

Also hardcore fans know what Madou is: the prequel RPG to Puyo puyo series. That's Japan only and you can only find translations to it.

I'm one of the hardcore fans and didn't realize about this game until I turned on my Ds lite.

Obscure?

SaGa Froniter, on PSX. I think the very large majority of RPG players hate it.

You know what shouldn't be an obscure game? Hard Corps: Uprising.
Go buy it now for the Xbox Live Arcade or Playstation Network.
It's a Contra game from Konami, but get this. It's developed by Arc System Works (Guilty Gear/Blaze Blue)!!!!!
It has RPG elements and online play!

This is truly a much more depressing era for vidya games than I thought, if Contra is now "obscure."

Thus saith producer Kenji Yamamoto:

Quote

As you play, you will collect points that you can spend to upgrade your character’s abilities, armor and weaponry. Difficulty-wise, it’s still no cakewalk, but you at least have a chance to build up your character to help you advance through the game and improve your shooter-playing skills.
You could do that in Devil May Cry, and that wasn't an RPG, either. Just has RPG elements, like many non-RPGs out there.

I would download it....can you totally play it on the psp? I can give it a shoot even though suppose to get Front mission 3 if I get any PSN cash....

speaking of Front mission has anyone played this? It's not that popular of a series and only 1/3/that other one came out in USA; 2 has not been ported to America.

Also Bahamunt Lagoon...*squints* think that's how you spell it. It was translated but think it's Japan only because of some pedo vibes from one character and adult humor for a SNES game. I heard a rumor it was redone in Japan though for one of the future gen systems like PSX or PS2 but I have no idea off hand.

I have to go look it up but remember me and my old high school friends use to talk about this game and what characters we made/got since I was the only person who had Pal Pal the general on my team.

Half of my post makes me realize that I need to wear my glasses more.

I'll be forever depressed thanks to a lack of localized Front Mission 5.

If they were born in the 80's and never played or at least heard of the Contra series, then there's something very wrong with them. Perhaps they lived in an isolated cave during the late 80's/ early 90's. The poor things...

I have been in love with Smash TV lately. And Robotron 2084 as well. I just downloaded a Mame ROM for Total Carnage, which looks like Smash TV + Commando (The Capcom game!)

As far as really OBSCURE games go I really like Japanese vertical space ship shooters otherwise known as Shmups. Games like Donpachi, Layer Section/Galatic Attack, DoDonpachi, RayForce, the Raiden series, Gunbird, the Castle of Shikigami series, Radilgy, Chaos Field, Ikuraga, Trizeal, Triggerheart Exelica, Blazing Lazers, Truxton etc. I could go on, but I won't. Those are pretty obscure as most of them don't get released stateside. Most of the ones I played are on the Dreamcast, and Japan only, but you can burn copies of those games without modding or anything, which is neat! The Japanese Saturn and PC Engine are also great Shmup systems. I haven't really got into horizontal shmups, but I really liked Thunder Force IV, which was released as LIGHTENING FORCE: QUEST FOR THE DARKSTAR on the Sega Genesis. It's in all caps, because it's awesome.

Also another awesome game on the Saturn that might be kind of obscure is Daytona USA, which I can only sum up like so:
DU DU DU DU DU DU DUDU DU DUUUUUU DDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYTTTTTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

Heh Daytona is so awesome it can't be contained by the box!

I'm not sure if it's actually obscure or not, but Jet Force Gemini for N64. It might just be old or something, I don't know.

I was one of the first people to pick up Suikoden II back on release and loved that game, while critics panned the game with low scores. Now look at the game one of the most expensive and sought after ps1 games to date and fun too, 3-5 were good (except IV) but 1 and 2 are just awesome.

Another one im playing very obscure and just came out is Eternal Destiny, simple yet a fun game with no need to download so to me its a game that has some chance if people platy it, (browser based mmo)

Suikoden 1 & 2 are definitely two of my top 3 JRPGS of all time. I beat the first Suikoden twice, and I beat Suikoden 2 like four times (getting the best ending was ridiculously satisfying). Just thinking about those two games brings back fond memories!

Another obscure game that I enjoy is Kartia: Dawn of Fate for the PS1. It's a turn-based tactics JRPG in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics, but besides just controlling your human characters, you can also create and control different kinds of "Golems" whose strengths and weaknesses counter each other's in a sort of Rock, Paper, Scissors formula. The storyline was pretty good, and the animation style was unique.

I discovered Suikoden 1 only after it went out of print. (I forget if I rented it, or bought it used.) It became one of my favorite PS1 games. I was even willing to purchase the PS1 Classic version through the Playstation Store.

While I managed to find a used copy of Suikoden 2 before it became way too expensive, I didn't enjoy it quite as much. The first few hours of the game seemed to be one setback after another, and just watching the characters suffer because of circumstances. I still have a disc in working condition, so someday I should give it another chance.

Omg, speaking of rock, paper, scissors action, Magic Pengel is one game pretty much no one has played or heard of. Luckily I have it for PS2 & I suggest you play it if you actually like to play obscure games. It's kind of like Pokemon where your creation battles another creation in turn-based combat. The neat thing about this game though is that you design your creation from scratch with this magic pen angel (thus the title Pengel). The bigger you draw the body = more HP. The bigger you draw the arms and legs = increased damage. If you have more of the color blue = more magic power. So you basically control how you want to battle your opponent. As simple as this game is, it's crazy intense and addicting.

Trust me dude, give it another chance, especially if you enjoyed Suikoden 1. I promise that you will not be disappointed. The suffering and setbacks in the beginning set the stage for an epic conflict.

Legend of the skies might be. I have no idea what this game is about or what it's going to be besides an JRPG game.

Congo Bongo and that Safari Mario game; I didn't know about either until I played Sega's greatest hits and found an interesting article about Mario on yahoo.

Pocky and Rocky; does anyone remember this or the Ranma 1/2 fighting game?

Suikoden 2- is is on PSP classics or still expensive as heck PS1?

I don't know if Record of Agarest War could be counted as obscure, I usually see it being offered in game stores where I live (on release day I was tempted to get the "Naughty Edition" for the hell of it).

"Overlooked" Games (Because they've been whispered about but not given much thought)

Infinite Undiscovery
Battle Fantasia
The Last Remnant
Nier

Poor Enslaved got kicked to the side because of CoD: Black Ops releasing around the same time

I've got a small list of games that people tend to not take a second look at or have never even heard of during their existence.

*Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (SNES)
*Lufia and the Fortress of Doom (SNES)
*Zone of the Enders (PS2)

There's more, but I was young when I played some of the games I'm sure people can't remember. I may go have a look in the attic closet soon.
