Okay, I love discussing this topic. Speculating the popular fanart for the next year is something I enjoy. So let's talk about it. Anyone that is doing prints, buttons, badges, keychains, or anything else with fanart on it: What series are you planning on doing for next year?

I try to have a balance of current in Japan, current in the U.S., obsessed fan fandoms, classics, (and then original too, but that doesn't pertain to this topic). So here is my list (though I'm sure I'll forget a few) of fanart I'm planning for 2011. (+)=I predict it will grow from 2010, (*)=I predict it will stay the same as 2010, and (-)=I predict the support and love for that fandom is dying and then I'll mark my big 2010 sellers with (2010 big seller).

I honestly think that a lot of whether a series sells though is what character or characters you draw. I don't know. Go forth, discuss. I'll share knowledge and hopefully other people will too. So we can discuss fandoms, characters, last year's sales, speculations on next year's sales, or whatever having to do with the Artist Alley and fandoms. Go!

Really? I'm very surprised that star trek fan art would do so well at an anime convention, heh. Live and learn, I suppose!

My table doesn't have much fan art except for Final Fantasy XI and Kingdom Hearts, but the plushies and crafts I do have went like hot cakes! -well, mostly the Kingdom Hearts-

Yeah, I just did it because I wanted a set of the Trek buttons myself. Spock stole the lead in button sales from Link almost immediately (and I sell a lot of Link buttons). It took me by surprise too. People get really excited to see the series in anime style.

It surprises me how well plushes and crafts do at these larger conventions. Actually, just in general lately. I hope that trend continues.

Actually, I think that a lot of people really like the sci-fi stuff too. People are crazy about Trek and Dr. Who for sure. And you were at Detour with Dr. Horrible stuff?!?! Ugh, I wish I could have gotten away from my table more. I didn't really browse at all until late Saturday, and then just for a moment.

Waaah! I just followed the link in your signature, and I have totally bought things from you! I have the Spock and Axel badges. Was your booth also the one with the widdle chibi buddons? Namely Link and Heartless? Cause I definitely have those, too. :3 Though my Link button is starting to mold, of all things, cause I get caught in rainstorms a little too frequently...

I will admit that I am a little worried going in to an anime convention with so many scifi and video game things. :/ But I have so much less time now, in college, that I have to carefully distribute my hobbies and unfortunately, sitting in front of the computer watching anime has been pushed about a bit. :<

Wow, is NO ONE making Pokemon?? O_o They're a perennial favorite at my table, and with the Black and White games coming out next year, we're expecting to see extra interest!

I have noticed that anything Pokeman has come back with a vengeance. I think it must be because it is not only a timely thing, but also a nostalgic thing for some people. I thought about doing a little bit, but my list is soooo long that I'm not sure I could fit it in. I hope that they continue to sell well at your table.

Here's my point of view as an Artist Alley fan...

First, I look for creative things. When I see something unexpected (room signs, P-chan piggy banks, sprite art), I'll take notice. It helps if the item is not too large or fragile.

Second, I look for fan-related things relevant to my interests. There's plenty of fanart based on Bleach or Zelda or other well-known series. But I'm more interested in stuff that isn't yet xbox hueg, or that is a little out of date. At ACen 2011, I'm hoping to see fan-made works inspired by the following:

= Squid Girl
= Hayate the Combat Butler
= Yotsuba and!
= Franken Fran
= Sakura Taisen
= Scribblenauts
= Peggle
= Dragon Quest (especially games 1-7)
= Game Dev Story

I admit some of these series are kinda obscure, and have only a few fans...

Yotsuba!! We have a design of her! There's a pic on our blog (hookedonchibis.blogspot.com) or her being held by our awesome PR lady.

Since I last posted, We've added a hodgepodge of somewhat random characters, cherry-picked from across fandoms, including but not limited to: Ramona Flowers (Scott Pilgrim), Helen Narbon (from the Narbonic webcomic - at the request of the artist!), Yotsuba, Death the Kid, and Zelgadis (Slayers). Also, weirdly, sales of Naruto dolls in my shop have gone up. O_o Maybe it's not as dead as we'd thought (hoped?) ... ^^;

Wow...I generally do original art (because somehow I've never been interested in doing fanart as a hobby--but I'm ok with it in general), and it's cool to see how well you guys know the market for different fandoms. Like, making predictions and everything!

It always seemed to me like Naruto and Bleach fandoms were probably never going to die. I thought Harry Potter stuff was really popular too, but that's the extent of my fandom knowledge.

The only fanart I've ever drawn that wasn't a commission is that of Sailor Moon. Hah! I wonder if I'm showing my age with that comment...

Since you guys mentioned WarCraft, I was considering making some StarCraft II fanart...I wonder if that would sell at Acen.

I've got a weird chunk of fandoms going! I don't normally do a lot of fanart (I make most of my money off of commissions during the year), but here's what I'm going to have at my table:

I'm trying to come up with some other ideas. It's definitely crunch time to get these done!
