It's not a complete major crisis, it's just a bump in the road. Some events that are more important than attending an Anime Convention will arise, especially an event in regards to an accomplishment you achieved.

There are many more ACens to come but, you only get to cross that stage once. This shows that you stuck through those four years to complete High School and you shouldn't miss it for anything.

My best friend last year, graduated college AND worked as staff last year so it can be accomplished. This all depends if you are out of state, or in state. If you are in state, talk this over with family and friends to coordinate enough time for rest. Use the time you will be at ACen if you chose to go, as a celebration. If you are out of state, I am recommending that you stick at home for graduation.

Sig hacking train! NarumiKenshin Invaded your signature! (so has Alkaren to fix spelling :[) (so did Riker just for fun)(As was HaruHE, just for the heck of it.). Walking across that stage is all for the parents and in that sense you're going to get stuck doing it. I know that I could have cared less about doing it, but it was important to my mom so I did.

I would hardly call this a major crisis though. Simply life and responsibility taking some hold. It happens.

Exactly how mandatory is that rehearsal on the 20th? Have you asked the school about not attending it? Other than that I don't see any issues...

I agree with Songstress. This isn't a major crisis. It's just a bump in the road. You only graduate high school once while ACen will be around for a long time. Honestly, just suck it up and do the rehearsal and go to your graduation. You can still go Friday night and most of Saturday. That's plenty of time for ACen. The first few years or so I only went on Saturday and up until a couple of years ago, I stayed Friday night-Sunday because of school. School is more important and I think going to your graduation is something you should go to. School always ended the first week of June for me so I have not been in your situation, but if I had been, I would have gone to my graduation and rehearsal because of how much it meant to my family.

If you live in Chicago, then it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Go to the rehearsal (if it's mandatory; otherwise, skip it), go to ACen for awhile, go home, graduate the next day, go out and celebrate at ACen that night. If you're cosplaying and it's not too complicated, wear it under your robes. That'll give you a fun story to tell in reunions to come.

If it was a college graduation...eh, it's not so much a big deal then. I skipped my MA ceremony and didn't miss much. (Let's see: keynote speaker droning on for three hours about how much he hated Bush; weenie roast; watching my professors get drunk. Yeah, I missed nothing.) But high school graduation is really important, especially to parents and relatives. Talking as a guy who travels 2300 miles one-way to ACen every year, you should skip ACen to graduate.

But like I said, if you live in Chicagoland, then it should be no prob to do both, which is awesome.

My mom graduated from college this past spring and a lot of people didn't show up. I'm glad she went though because this was so important to her and us.

We are very proud! If she doesn't get a job soon, she is going to take classes to be certified in ultra sounds and mammograms to make more money.

This is not major. Or a crisis. Go to school, because school is real life and relevant and anime is just cartoons.

...The people going on about the importance of school in this thread are kind of bugging me, ngl. I know the concept that "high school is the best time of your life" is a popular cliche, but for many of us it's far from true (and this sounds like OP is in high school, forgive me if I'm incorrect OP). Assuming OP really really loved and enjoyed school and should celebrate its wonders at the ceremony is a bit....eugh, speaking as someone whose experience with high school was hellish. I think the answer to this depends on the situation. What did you get out of school? Did you really learn? Did you have good teachers? Did you enjoy it? If yes, by all means go to the rehearsal and ceremony, and squeeze ACen in only if possible, maybe via a Saturday-only badge. Maybe find another con to go to this year to make up for it. Did you learn little? Were your teachers unhelpful or even cold to you? Were you bullied and did teachers and administrators do nothing? Was school utterly miserable for you? Then find a way out. If this ceremony will just be boredom and discomfort for you, get out of it and enjoy yourself at ACen.

@Krystal: She's a rad tech, which deals with x-rays. If she gets certified to do ultra sounds, she will deal with pregnant women wanting to look at the baby in their stomach.

@Sand Storm: You were much more blunt than I. XD

It seems like you already have your plans so I'm not 100% sure why you asked here. It seems to me like you want a validation for something whether it be this plan, skipping the graduation stuff in total or skipping Acen.

So here's what I want to say and it really will be an echo of what has been posted here already.

1 - if you didn't care about your graduation this wouldn't be a dilemna to you so I have to say, ignore what people are saying about how it is or isn't important because in the end those are just their opinions. ( i know personally, I would have missed acen for my graduation without too much thought. I would have been sad I missed it but as someone posted earlier: there will be more acens, a graduation from HS is a once in a lifetime event)

2 - Your plan about going to all the events is the best one I've heard so far. You can make everyone happy with this one. The only thing I would change is that I would skip going to the con on friday night. This is because (I assume) you'll be spending $165 on a hotel for one night. If you just go for Saturday you can get in lots of fun and almost all the main events. Plus you can spend Friday making sure that you have everything for Sunday set and ready so you're not rushed Saturday night or sunday morning.

In general, this situation isn't ideal but acen really is just about fun. I too have a similiar issue coming up in 2012. That will be the year I graduate college and since I started I planned to get a suite at acen for a treat to myself. However in 2012, acen falls in the middle of the year for me. (late april) I don't have a car of my own to get to the con from the out of state college I'm in and I don't plan on skipping classes or work . I basically have to chose to attend less of Acen to make all the work I did to get to my senior year worth it...

hope this helped
I won't be attending Acen 2012 due to school. Acen 2013 Cosplays remain a secret.

Silly thing to worry over.

Just wait as you get older and grow-up other things will be more important then going to Acen. Your life should not revolve around any one thing to the point that it takes over. That includes families, and lovers, and maybe even kids(if you have them). Hell I retired from Acen staff this year so that I would not have the added stress while I was pregnant with twins. But I know that unless things go really really wrong there will always be another year or 12 of Acen cons to go to later in life.

I wish you good luck, and advise you to stop be so over dramatic in college if you go, as it won't get you far.

It will be ok, as I said use the time you are at the con as a graduation present to yourself. If you do not have to return your cap and gown right away, wear it at con!

It's very stressful when events begin to overlap. Just keep a strict schedule and everything will be fine :D
